Anyone else feel bad just doing their normal shopping?!

Rosemarysbaby · 13/03/2020 11:40

My Facebook is full of people sharing memes about not panic buying.

I have a big family, we eat a lot, we get though a lot of loo roll. I normally have a fairly well stocked pantry, beans, tomatoes etc... I feel bad just doing my normal family shop now!

I know I’m being oversensitive but I can’t be the only one.

DH got big loo roll, big milk and kidney beans (3 tins as on offer) on his way home because we needed them and 2 people on the bus felt the need to comment on his “panic buying”.

It was like Christmas in my local Tesco today and yesterday was apparently worse.
I’d heard about shelves being stripped in various threads but not experienced it as up until this week the only thing missing was paracetamol.
Today, no paracetamol, last few shower gel. No fresh or dried pasta. No sauce, tinned veg, long life milk and the cereal aisle was decimated.
There were mountains of half price Easter Eggs which seemed to be the only thing not selling.
Saw a few elderly people wandering round with their baskets probably missing half the stuff.

youkiddingme · 13/03/2020 15:52

You know a lot of people will probably start shopping for vulnerable relatives as well as for themsleves. Will they be accosted for panic buying?

NotJust3SmallWords · 13/03/2020 15:52

I know what you mean. I went into a shop last night on the way home from work and bought a nine pack of toilet roll because we were nearly out. I felt a bit self-conscious carrying it home! It's crazy!

Echobelly · 13/03/2020 15:53

No, our weekly shop doesn't look like bulk buying. Luckily DH (uncharacteristically) decided to get a Costco haul of tinned toms, rice, chick peas etc,(where everything looks like panic buying!) last month, so I've just been dropping in a few extra things each shop.

We actually have quite a lot of loo roll as I'd bought a big batch just before DH went to Costco a little while back and bought a load. I'm going to feel awkward when we do need some!

Vintagehearts · 13/03/2020 15:55

Do self scan, then you can pack as you shop around the store. No one can see what you're buying then to make comments on.

justthecat · 13/03/2020 16:12

Nothing to do with current virus, but I had a ASDA driver preach at me once when he passed me my bottled water, how he didn’t understand why people by bottled water. He soon shut up when I told him I didn’t have taps that produced the sparkling kind!

Itstheprinciple · 13/03/2020 16:26

I couldn't care less what people think of the contents of my trolley.
I still have some Brexit supplies left so I've just been adding the odd extra couple of things to that when I've been in a shop.
I'm doing a mother's day family meal next week (as long as we're not on lock down) so I'll be doing an extra big shop. 🤷‍♀️ I know my reasons. It's no one else's business.

Paperdollss · 13/03/2020 16:31

I had this when when I was buying my normal weekly shop today, assistant made comment about how he hasn’t stopped all day because of everyone panic buying..... I’m on benefits and receive them weekly, I physically can’t stock up and live week to week, it just so happened that the day I weekly shop on was the day after BJ told people to start self Iso for coughs and feversConfused

BacklashStarts · 13/03/2020 17:01

He seemed to be either having the time of his life or having some kind of mental breakdown. He was buying a lot of cat food so no danger of the cats eating the manic bastard if hes stranded at home. Grin snorted at that!

I don’t understand why people aren’t using more bar soap - lasts longer. Is there a reason?

Songofsixpence · 13/03/2020 17:07

I know what you mean

I popped into ASDA last night and got comments at the till

I bought a 9 pack of loo roll - because we were down to the last roll at home.

2 packs of sanitary towels - I have 2 daughters who are both due their periods in the next couple of days

1 small bag of pasta and a jar of pasta bake sauce - I left work late, was knackered and wanted something quick and easy to chuck in the oven when I got home

The person at the till kept on about people panic buying loo roll and pasta and how selfish they were.

FireUnderpants · 13/03/2020 17:12

I went last night with DD to buy party bag supplies. We had a dozen scented candles, a dozen body mists and a dozen large chocolate bars. The checkout lady told us we were panic buying the wrong stuff.

chocolateisavegetable · 13/03/2020 17:25

FireUnderpants that's made me very tempted to bulk-buy really random stuff to confuse checkout staff Grin

Marmite27 · 13/03/2020 17:34

I’ve had a really heavy period and needed to replace what I’d used. I wanted a 4 pack of loo roll but ended up with a 16 pack, 2 packs of bodyform, 2 packs of paracetamol and a big bag of rice that they didn’t have on Friday. The checkout guy took one look at the stuff and said ‘isn’t it traditionally chocolate that you buy with that lot, not rice’ Grin

Redcrayons · 13/03/2020 17:40

No toilet rolls to be had in my town today. I like to keep well stocked, so ordinarily I wouldn’t even think about it till I’m down to last 6.

I’m sure it will all be topped back up in the week though.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2020 19:56

What a difference an ocean makes.

I went out last night to do a completely unashamed run for neat bleach, TP, antibac spray, sanpro, Tylenol and grocery items. Walmart did not have a single piece of bog roll, and no bleach either.

While I was standing in the household section considering my options, an employee rolled a cartload of boxed gallon bottles of bleach, Lysol spray and other disinfectant products into the aisle; customers opened the boxes themselves and passed items out to anyone calling for them.

Many people had trolleys piled high with groceries, otc medication, incontinence products, tins of food, coffee, you name it.

Big crowd, not as much laughter and banter as you usually hear in Walmart, and no snide remarks whatsoever about what people were buying or why.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 13/03/2020 20:20

Reading this is so funny, everyone in supermarket this afternoon with the smallest trolleys and very tiny non multipack things in. Us Brits are hilarious.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 13/03/2020 20:27

Maybe being oversensitive. Just buy it!

Ladyglitterfairydust · 13/03/2020 20:36

I went to Asda last night and it was ridiculous. Loads of empty shelves and saw one couple buying 48 toilet rolls! Others with trolleys piled high with loads of cereal and tinned soup etc. I was just doing my usual weekly shop, but there was loads I couldn’t get. Went to Lidl this morning and it was great. Car park fine and got everything I needed, including rice and pasta. No one seemed to be bulk buying, everyone just shopping and behaving normally. All very sensible.

DettolsYourFriend · 13/03/2020 20:41

I went to Aldi and Asda today and they had nothing (was shopping for immuno suppressed mum) so I went to Waitrose. They had most things. Pasta and toilet roll - loads! Very civilised.

Daisychainsandglitter · 13/03/2020 22:24

@ItWentInMyEye I can totally relate. DD1 also has ASD. She has an extremely limited diet so we always have to bulk buy for her just in case. Dreading the shops running out of any of the foods she eats. Will be an absolute nightmare!

TerfTerfTerf · 13/03/2020 23:33

For those who haven't seen this about panic-buying..,Grin

Anyone else feel bad just doing their normal shopping?!
ThunderPython · 13/03/2020 23:34

@TerfTerfTerf that's so true isn't it Grin

shutupsteph · 13/03/2020 23:37

Yep! We buy baby milk 5 at a time because that does us for the month but I feel guilty doing that now in case we're wiping out the stock for another family 😕

Greenmarmalade · 13/03/2020 23:41

Self-preservation. I’m buying lots in for my family to keep us in stock if I fall ill. I don’t feel bad at all.

happypotamus · 14/03/2020 09:06

DH went to Sainsburys yesterday to do the normal weekly shop. This included 3 tins of chopped tomatoes, he got some funny looks for buying all of them. There was no toilet roll, pasta, gnocchi or rice, barely any frozen food, biscuits (should have stockpiled chocolate hobnobs earlier), onions, bread, jars of olives, flour. DH is vegan and was surprised to find other vegans had also been in stockpiling, as there was also no tofu, no hummus and barely any plant-based milks. He didn't realise there were many other vegans round here.
