Anyone else feel bad just doing their normal shopping?!

My Facebook is full of people sharing memes about not panic buying.

I have a big family, we eat a lot, we get though a lot of loo roll. I normally have a fairly well stocked pantry, beans, tomatoes etc... I feel bad just doing my normal family shop now!

I know I’m being oversensitive but I can’t be the only one.

DH got big loo roll, big milk and kidney beans (3 tins as on offer) on his way home because we needed them and 2 people on the bus felt the need to comment on his “panic buying”.

Next time anyone comments on you buying loo roll just tell 'em you have terrible diarrhoea. You can barely make it to the shops. In fact - ooh, hope the checkout operator hurries up.. Wink

GiantKitten · 13/03/2020 12:55

The crazy thing there isnt a shortage of food , supermarkets have limited storage space so they always have several deliveries a day

I think people are fearing future staffing problems when a lot of staff are off sick & the supply chain won’t be reliable.

FionaCorkesWardrobebyKamizole · 13/03/2020 12:57

Two words: Self checkout.

Best way to avoid the idiots who think they have the right to make personal comments .

mklanch · 13/03/2020 13:01

they dont have self checkouts in homebargains

Isthistrueor · 13/03/2020 13:02

I went into a supermarket earlier that had no hand wash or sanitiser left at all, the whole section was just bare. Absolutely ridiculous.

But no, I don’t feel guilty doing my normal shopping at all. I’d feel guilty if I went in and foolishly bought ten packs of bog roll and five hand washes.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 13/03/2020 13:02

Can’t really take a fortnightly shop to a self service till....

IntermittentParps · 13/03/2020 13:09

Yeah, I do a bit. Supermarket was heaving yesterday and stern signs up about soap, loo roll etc being limited to however many per person. I wasn't even doing a 'big shop', just getting a few tins, cheese, bread etc and several bags of crisps Blush Grin

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 13/03/2020 13:11

No I've just been in Asda and bought croissants and french fancies. I feel great Grin. I've done no panic buying.

dementedma · 13/03/2020 13:14

Guy in front of me in Tescos just bought 10 loaves of bread. I felt guilty i was buying wine, chocolate, cakes and a newspaper !

Comefromaway · 13/03/2020 13:15

My ds is also autistic with food issues. I've been unable to get his particular brand of cereal and today (he has a throat infection) there was no calpol at all, he can't take tablets.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/03/2020 13:16

Oh heavens I had a comment about buying porridge oats yesterday Confused because I bought two bags.

I always buy two bags 🤷🏻‍♀️. I pretended not to hear her.

Mydogatemypurse · 13/03/2020 13:17

It's no one else's business what you buy really. There is panic buying happening and it's going to carry on. People are getting anxiety.

StillDisappointed · 13/03/2020 13:18

I felt awful today, but needed to get essentials that I'd normally stock up on anyway (even when not bulk buying.)

I went shopping when the supermarket just opened (8am) so there was fresh stock. Bought 18 toilet rolls and two 3kg packs of pasta; a normal amount when I do my pantry shop, but I felt dreadful.
I bought 4 bottles of hand soap because I've 4 bathrooms, again felt terrible - but I needed it!
Same for tins, bread, milk and all my freezer stuff.

Think the worst of the looks were when I was getting my cleaning products - I wouldn't mind but there was tons of bleach, washing up liquid and wipes left on the shelves!
The only thing that was sparse was the Dettol aerosol spray, so I only picked up two.

It's a shop I do once a month anyway, but I was getting severe daggers for doing so.
Toilet rolls were all gone by the time I'd paid for my shopping though (less than an hour) - madness!

MamaDane · 13/03/2020 13:20

We just order our groceries online. Then again, Denmark is on lockdown, so it's better staying away from other people in supermarkets and such.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 13/03/2020 13:22

In Asda the other day I bought normal shopping but Johnsons baby wipes were on offer for 45p,so I bought 8 packs - we get through loads anyway. Checkout operator commented, I was rather embarrassed 😂Should have just used self service tills.

ItWentInMyEye · 13/03/2020 13:22

@Comefromaway Have you tried shops like Savers/quality save/home bargains etc for calpol? I had to get an own brand one just for the flavour. Thanks

Comefromaway · 13/03/2020 13:42

He is managing to tolerate neurofen thank-you.

MistyIsland · 13/03/2020 13:50

Tried to do an online shop for home delivery over 70% of the stuff I wanted was out of stock, and I ended up not being able to get a slot.

Went to a big tesco and it was manic - no toilet roll, no hand wash, no kitchen spray, no pasta, no baked beans, no rice, no tinned toms 🤷‍♀️ I barely have enough food to last the weekend let alone a week fucking ridiculous!

I wish I could bloody panic buy but the shops are stripped bare.

JingsMahBucket · 13/03/2020 13:56

I still don’t understand people who only buy toilet paper in 4-packs, financial reasons not withstanding. It just makes more sense to but it in 9, 12, 16, etc packs. You don’t have to think about it for a while.

Rosemarysbaby · 13/03/2020 13:57

Lots of people don’t have limited or no storage space.

OP posts:
Rosemarysbaby · 13/03/2020 13:58

That made no sense!
Lots of people have no storage space, or limited storage space.

LastTrainEast · 13/03/2020 13:58

I buy a load of whatever items on my list are on special offer so it would look like I was panic buying now.

Still if anyone said anything you could cough purposely and watch them cower in fear. :)

To be fair though I think till staff must get mind-numbingly bored. They are probably just desperate for something to talk about.

willowpatterns · 13/03/2020 14:03

I know what you mean - everything I bought yesterday was something people are panic-buying. I only needed a few things because we were having a chilli for dinner.
So the contents of my basket were tinned kidney beans, tinned tomatoes and rice Grin

JingsMahBucket · 13/03/2020 14:03

@Rosemarysbaby I get that about storage space too but even lots of people here on MN who were sneering at other posters for “panic buying loo roll” the past few weeks live in okay sized accommodations but still didn’t buy in larger quantities. I think it’s an over-reliance on the just in time grocery system but whatever.

LittleCandle · 13/03/2020 14:03

We just did our normal weekly shop. No pasta at all (don't eat that much), limited rice, no loo rolls. There were no bags of carrots, but that's okay as we just bought some loose. We did buy 2 jars of our usual coffee as it is on offer and really, life would be unbearable without coffee. I am not a person in the morning until I've had a cup. I luckily bought kibble for the dogs first thing this morning, as there wasn't much left and our beasts are fussy. A big bag would go to waste, as they would go off it long before the end!

But honestly, the way people were acting, it is as though the end of the world is nigh. And if the world does end, they won't need to buy endless loo rolls! Also no soap, but loads of shower gel and shampoo, because clearly people are generally too stupid to realise that they contain soap, too and can be used to wash your hands...
