A random adult called my DD’s phone

A unknown number rang on my 13 year old DD’s phone. She wasn’t in the room so I answered it.

It was an adult woman who said her name was ‘Karen’ who was talking about meeting up with dd and she knew DD’s name. I didn’t know what to say so I said I was DD’s mum and she apologised and said it was a wrong number.

I’m a bit freaked out that an adult has my DD’s number and knows her name. Advice please?

Talk to your daughter!

JemimaPuddleCat · 12/03/2020 08:10

Well, what did your daughter say?

AhoyMrBeaver · 12/03/2020 08:10

Does your daughter know who it was?

MissMogwai · 12/03/2020 08:10

Does your DD have WhatsApp, Facebook etc? I'd be checking messages.

What has your daughter said about it? Strange how she said it was a wrong number after she knew you were mum.

I'd take this very seriously and remove the phone until it was resolved.

OhLook · 12/03/2020 08:11

What does your daughter say about it?

VettiyaIruken · 12/03/2020 08:12

Ask your daughter who Karen is, block the number on her phone, keep a close eye on where she goes, that sort of thing.
Quite worrying I know. Pretty stupid of her to use your daughter's name, then say it was a wrong number.

twosoups1972 · 12/03/2020 08:12

She doesn’t know. She’s sensible and I’ve drummed it into her not to give out her phone number.

Really odd

Ask ds

MarthasGinYard · 12/03/2020 08:13

D

OhLook · 12/03/2020 08:13

I would take this very seriously as well.

Have you tried googling the number?

OhLook · 12/03/2020 08:13

Mention reporting it to the police to your daughter and see how she reacts.

OchAyeThaNoo · 12/03/2020 08:14

You need to have a good look through that phone. If you have an iPad, link then so all texts go to the iPad too. Get passwords for all accounts and keep checking.

LovingLola · 12/03/2020 08:15

Can you get the phone bill and check outgoing calls and tests to ensure your dd has not called or texted her.

twosoups1972 · 12/03/2020 08:15

Nothing came up from Google. I am very concerned.

I check her phone regularly and dd knows it.

Check the call history on the phone and yeah, run a Web search on the number.

Summersunandoranges · 12/03/2020 08:16

There is more to this than she is telling you.

LovingLola · 12/03/2020 08:16

If you have an iPad, link then so all texts go to the iPad too.

Only iMessages will show on a linked ipad.

Socalm · 12/03/2020 08:16

Oh sorry cross post.

OhLook · 12/03/2020 08:17

Call the number back.

Zaza1414 · 12/03/2020 08:17

I had a hospital call me at 3a.m once asking to speak to my 13 yr old by name...turns out it was a wrong number and just coincidence that my son had the same name.

I would block the number and have a chat with your daughter as it could just be a coincidence as well.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/03/2020 08:25

Does your DD have a common name?q

GloGirl · 12/03/2020 08:34

Counsellor, doctor etc?

sashh · 12/03/2020 08:56

I once had a text conversation with a friend, except it wasn't, it was a 12 year old, somehow the number stored had been corrupted.

I was mortified that I'd asked a 12 year old to meet at a pub, I apologised and deleted the number.

Numbers do get reused when one hasn't been used for 12 months or so.

Ask your dd about it, but it might be a genuine mistake.

PapercraftNinja · 12/03/2020 09:00

If the woman was talking about meeting up, what did she say? Like something had already been arranged like an appointment?
