A serum for INCREDIBLY dry skin?

I’ve got very very dry skin. So dry that I can rub my face a few times with my finger and dry flakes of skin will come off my face! Blush I want to buy a serum or moisturiser that really soaks in the skin and which will show an improvement I’m a few days. I’m looking for something that isn’t too oily but isn’t too light at the same time. I’ve been looking at Gatineau today but there are about 10 different things with all different names. It’s so confusing to what they’re all for. Anyone got any recommendations? I want to spend less than £50. Thanks!

If it’s that dry I would recommend Aveeno first to clear up the dryness. Once you’ve got the moisture back in to your skin then look at something more cosmetic.

PrettyLittleLiar20 · 09/03/2020 20:02

@somewheresorted I use aveeno! It doesn’t do anything at all. It’s not moisturising enough which is why I want something more high end.

Vichy nutrilogie 2. I've been using it for years and it's amazing. I used to have really bad dry skin/eczema and my skin feels really good now. Still get the odd dry patch but it's much better. About £20.

So glad it's not just me! My GP actually prescribed this and it did nothing for me.
I was sent a sample of a moisturiser called 'Mixa' and I've found that to be pretty good..

I have very, very dry skin that used to be flakey and the thing that has helped most with my face has been Nip+Fab glycolic pads followed by their Dragon's Blood serum. I also put a moisturising sun screen on top of that. It do it every single morning, it's the only thing that I've really stuck with for years.

Sometimes I use Nip+Fab Dragon's Blood pads followed by either Neal's Yard Frankinsense Intense moisturiser or Aldi caviar night cream at bedtime.

Honestly I've tried tons of very expensive stuff and most of them either gave me an allergic reaction or didn't work any better than the Nip+Fab.

Exfoliate or the serum is going nowhere! I'd use oil as well as serum and some thing rich like LRP cicaplast or weleda skin food.

What does the rest of your skincare routine look like? You may need to look at getting a better cleanser etc. Superdrug do a really good range called Naturally Radiant. The hot cloth cleanser is particularly good for dry skin Smile

DianaT1969 · 09/03/2020 20:13

Another vote for Nip+Fab glycolic, followed by The Ordinary Narula Oil and Nip+Fab hyualorinic serum on damp skin (not sure of spelling). I regularly get compliments on my skin from strangers. Whereas my legs are dry and flaky, so need to work on those.

Hylauronic acid from the ordinary or inkey list.

Pixi glow tonic after cleansing a few times a week.

somewheresorted · 09/03/2020 20:14

I’m surprised that Aveeno doesn’t work - I have an autoimmune disease that affects my skin and the only thing that works is Aveeno. It sounds more like a hydration issue with your skin than a true dryness/

Awks · 09/03/2020 20:19

I use Japanfusion from Beauty Pie - this works well on my ultra dry face.

GreyishDays · 09/03/2020 20:22

Are you sure it’s that dry? Mine sheds skin flakes but it’s due to Peri oral dermatitis and sebhoreic dermatitis. Acid toners and Nizoral shampoo (yes, on my face) sort it out.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 09/03/2020 20:38

Don't use Aveeno

I have the same problem as you, and whilst Aveeno works great for my kids eczema, it doesn't work on women's faces in the same way (in my experience).

Livedandlearned · 09/03/2020 20:43

I love eau thermale Avene hydration serum from Boots, i had super dry and flaky skin. I now have lovely soft skin.

yorkshireteaspoonie · 09/03/2020 20:44

I have terrible red dry autoimmune skin and Aveeno does nothing for me, just leaves a waxy layer on it a bit like ceravee. La Roche Posay cicaplast works well for me. I know you've mentioned something up to £50 but I often find irritated dry skin to be a complete bugger and the more expensive the product the fancier the ingredients which gives it more to hate!

WellTidy · 09/03/2020 20:48

If you’re going to use hyaluronic acid, then apply it to rally damp skin. If your skin is too dry when you apply it, it makes you feel like you’ve got a tight face mask on which you’re going to burst out of, Incredible Hulk style.

springydaff · 09/03/2020 20:48

Are you drinking lots of water?

Sorry if that's insulting! But ime I get very dry skin if I don't drink a LOT of water every day.

Elouera · 09/03/2020 20:50

I've had the same and this winter my cheeks have been like sandpaper!

I exfoliate- but I try to only do it fortnightly, weekly at most, incase that is flairing things up, BUT, it does allow the serums to penetrate, rather than sitting on the dry skin.

I use The ordinary Hyaluoronic acid (£6 Boots). Let it dry, then I put on Sanctury spa overnight miracle oil (£20 or 3 for 2 at boots). It is an oil, but soaks in once rubbed in. If its oily after 10mins, it means I've put too much on. Its the only thing I've found thats worked and my skin is almost back to normal. It tends to be a trial and error of what works for YOU and YOUR skin. good luck x

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/03/2020 20:51

CeraVe hydrating wash followed by the CeraVe cream in a tube not the tub. Also use TBS Drops of Light peel first once a week,it's the gentlest exfoliating cream EVER and it'll get rid of all the flakiness you are experiencing. Sounds scary but it isn't.

doadeer · 09/03/2020 20:51

Honestly I can recommend lots of expensive things but when I'm really dry I find astral best.

Do you wear make up? What do you take that off with? Do you use a Base moisturiser in the morning?

Notopel · 09/03/2020 20:58

Beauty Pie Hyaluronic acid. It’s amazing. I use it twice a day after cleansing ( with glycolic acid at night) and follow up with a vitamin c moisturiser.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/03/2020 20:58

This is the first winter I haven't had dry winter skin, 3 people including an Estée Lauder assistant told me I had beautiful skin and asked me what I used Shock I have NEVER had good skin,I've battled rosacea which has all but gone and I just don't seem to get dry at all now it's just normal. People always bang on about CeraVe on MN,I really wish I'd tried it sooner because it's a minor miracle in a tube imo. I also used Aveeno but it didn't work for very long. Apparently it's the ceramides which are magic.

I'll shut up now Blush

Gastonimo · 09/03/2020 21:01

I use oilatum emollient cream, it's the only thing I find that moisturises dry skin on my face. It's very thick but easily absorbed. I put it on before foundation.
My legs are always so dry and flaky and this seems to be the only thing that works for me, I've tried various prescription creams to but this seems to be best for me
