This can’t actually be spinal fluid... right?!

I realise this sounds absolutely bonkers. I should start off by saying that I am not a fan of Dr Google. I have some existing health issues, some symptoms aren’t fully explained by the diagnoses I have, but I have never once thought I have some rare disease or anything sinister.

About a year ago I was playing with a play tent and tunnel with my twins and a stream of clear fluid fell out of my left nostril as I bent over. I thought well that’s bloody weird, and then didn’t think much more about it to be honest.

About a month ago, the same thing happened while bending over tidying up. This time I tried to wipe it away when it happened but it felt like a fair amount. It was just clear fluid, slightly thicker than water, not like snot or mucus at all. I then had a nasty chemical taste in my mouth for the rest of the day. It happened a few more times that day in smaller quantities and then stopped. I felt a bit nauseous but otherwise fine. I thought maybe it was a sinus issue, then forgot all about it as it stopped.

It’s just happened again, while unloading the dishwasher - this time it happened so quickly that it just dripped out in big drips on the open dishwasher door. There were about four or five large drips in quick succession. Again it didn’t feel like mucus when I wiped my nose, the consistency is different.

So I googled it and found that very rarely such symptoms can be caused by a spinal fluid leak. One thing that stood out to me is that you can have it for years and patients are often misdiagnosed with ME or fibromyalgia - I’m diagnosed with both but the symptoms don’t necessarily seem to fit. Also it’s always the same nostril only which is another possible indicator.

It seems odd that there are long spells where it doesn’t happen. And I don’t have a terrible headache so I think it can’t possibly be that. I haven’t had any head injuries etc, just a spinal for c section 3.5 years ago but that was quite disastrous (7 attempts to get it in). I can’t see how a spinal could cause a leak in your head though.

Even if it is spinal fluid, there’s no imminent emergency - it seems it goes undetected for years, it can lead to infections but I have no sign of one.

I would feel like an absolute pillock saying to a doctor I think I might be leaking CSF out of my nose - I mean, that sounds crazy. And I wouldn’t necessarily be able to produce a sample to test on demand.

Has anyone had anything like this? I keep thinking there must be a rational explanation that isn’t this, but I can’t find anything - surely if it was allergies or sinus issues I’d have other symptoms and it wouldn’t just be one side of my nose?

This was about an hour ago and there’s been none since. Last time it happened if I waited a couple of hours and then leaned forward, I’d get a few more drops so maybe I should see if it happens again and try to catch a sample if it does? I have a urine sample pot in the cupboard.

There are new corona cases in our county so healthcare providers are completely overwhelmed and obviously I would rather not take up an emergency appointment when it’s not an emergency. Right now I’m not immediately concerned because I feel okay. But obviously if that’s what it is I need to get checked out and possibly treated to prevent an infection happening.

I can’t tell if I’ve fallen victim to Dr Google or if I should be concerned. Have I gone completely mad? (Very possible!)

You've gone mad!! You have a runny nose, ffs. It's not spinal fluid - don't be daft!

DesLynamsMoustache · 09/03/2020 18:57

I don't think it's bonkers. It's nothing I've ever experienced before, except when I've obviously had a cold and it's clearly nasal mucus. Given you have a couple of health conditions that make it more likely, I don't think it's a crazy reach. Better to get something ruled out than ignore it, IMO.

Winkywoop · 09/03/2020 18:59

I get this when I'm washing my hair over the side of the bath. It's just a runny nose.

I get the chemical taste too

firsttimemum30 · 09/03/2020 18:59

Postnasal drip can come back through your nose, sounds more likely.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 09/03/2020 19:00

I think I have heard of this before. Definitely keep a sterilised sample pot handy and catch some of the fluid if you possibly can!

JeanMichelBisquiat · 09/03/2020 19:00

Hi sinkgirl - I remember you from another thread (think we talked about cannula insertion?!)

I had what I now am pretty sure was a CSF leak years ago, immediately after hitting my head massively hard on a concrete lintel. I was an idiot teenager at the time, so just thought my nose had run with shock, had a lie down and forgot all about it! I'm pretty sure it was a skull fracture.

I also get this very occasionally - out of nowhere I suddenly get a gush of clear fluid out of my nose. I'd also googled recently and realised it might be an issue, but hadn't got round to doing anything about it Grin

So I think you're not wrong about maybe following it up, basically!

Bumfuzzled · 09/03/2020 19:00

I get this when my sinuses have been blocked. It’s clear watery stuff that just randomly runs out of my nose. I just assumed it was stuff from my sinuses.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 09/03/2020 19:00

Catch it in a pot and consult with the GP.

I don’t think you’re mad, fucks sakes, folk know the difference between snot and something that’s not snot.

If I were you I’d get it checked out. Heaven knows if it is CSF but certainly worth the ask.

LambriniSocialist · 09/03/2020 19:01

Yes, sometimes when my nose runs its very watery, I think it's just runny snot tbh.

Largeyellowdaffodil · 09/03/2020 19:01

Isn't it sinus fluid? I have it all the time.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/03/2020 19:05

I’ve had this randomly. Unloading the dishwasher, washing machine and the dryer. It’s a bright yellow liquid. Definitely not mucus. It’s liquid. I googled and read it was spinal fluid. But I don’t think it is. I think turning your head in that way unblock some random pocket of post nasal drip.

SpinachQueen · 09/03/2020 19:07

PaulHollywoodsSexGut something that's not snot's not?

DonPablo · 09/03/2020 19:08

This happened to a friend of mine. He thought nothing of it. Then it happened again whilst he was visiting his parents. His dad was a gp and his sister too. They said it was spinal column fluid. I can't remember what happened next though.

So it absolutely could be. But I don't know how likely it is to be though!

cheesycrisps · 09/03/2020 19:08

Not totally unheard off, have you had any head trauma?

Years ago I worked with a woman with a great story ... she'd had a car accident, bumped her head but no obvious injury. Months later she went to the dr with a persistant runny nose, but only if she leaned forward. Turns out she'd cracked her skull and her brain fluid was leaking!!!

SinkGirl · 09/03/2020 19:08

It’s honestly nothing like snot. Even when I have a very runny nose it’s not like water, it’s still a bit slimy (sorry, that’s gross!) - never had snot that that could fall in drips like that (imagine really big heavy rain droplets, it’s like that). The only way I can describe it is like amniotic fluid - that sort of consistency. I got a drop on my hand and it ran like water, just a bit thicker.

Maybe I am going mad (again, very possible!) but it’s just so strange. If I can catch a sample I will, and obviously if I get a terrible headache or anything else like that I will see a doctor. Otherwise maybe I’ll just see if it happens again.

Glad I didn’t post in AIBU, I’m sure I’d be branded utterly batshit 😂

(@JeanMichelBisquiat well remembered! Your technique worked absolute wonders on DT2 so thank you!)

One sided nasal discharge should always be investigated.

SinkGirl · 09/03/2020 19:16

That’s what really seemed odd to me, that it’s always the one nostril.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 09/03/2020 19:18

@SinkGirl GrinFlowers absolute pleasure! Was thinking of you the other day after I'd given the same tip to a friend in real life! X

Ffsseriously · 09/03/2020 19:20

@AlexaAmbidextra can i ask why? What does it signify?

swashbucklecheer · 09/03/2020 19:23

It happens to me from time to time. It is yellow in colour and just drips out if your head is down. It's def not snot or a runny nose in anyway. It happens too infrequently and randomly for me to do anything about it.

Evidencebased · 09/03/2020 19:24

Why is that, AlexaAmbidextra , please?
Is one sided nasal discharge always a sign that something's up?

AlexaAmbidextra · 09/03/2020 19:24

Well without wishing to be alarmist it can mean there is a localised problem in one of the maxillary sinuses. Maybe something as innocent as a polyp but you can also get malignant growths there.

Summersunandoranges · 09/03/2020 19:25

Yes I’d actually go to the GP. Hope your ok!

SinkGirl · 09/03/2020 19:28

Well it’s good to know other people have had the same for a while and nothing dreadful has happened so that’s something!

Understood Alexa, I will make an appointment
