This can’t actually be spinal fluid... right?!

I realise this sounds absolutely bonkers. I should start off by saying that I am not a fan of Dr Google. I have some existing health issues, some symptoms aren’t fully explained by the diagnoses I have, but I have never once thought I have some rare disease or anything sinister.

About a year ago I was playing with a play tent and tunnel with my twins and a stream of clear fluid fell out of my left nostril as I bent over. I thought well that’s bloody weird, and then didn’t think much more about it to be honest.

About a month ago, the same thing happened while bending over tidying up. This time I tried to wipe it away when it happened but it felt like a fair amount. It was just clear fluid, slightly thicker than water, not like snot or mucus at all. I then had a nasty chemical taste in my mouth for the rest of the day. It happened a few more times that day in smaller quantities and then stopped. I felt a bit nauseous but otherwise fine. I thought maybe it was a sinus issue, then forgot all about it as it stopped.

It’s just happened again, while unloading the dishwasher - this time it happened so quickly that it just dripped out in big drips on the open dishwasher door. There were about four or five large drips in quick succession. Again it didn’t feel like mucus when I wiped my nose, the consistency is different.

So I googled it and found that very rarely such symptoms can be caused by a spinal fluid leak. One thing that stood out to me is that you can have it for years and patients are often misdiagnosed with ME or fibromyalgia - I’m diagnosed with both but the symptoms don’t necessarily seem to fit. Also it’s always the same nostril only which is another possible indicator.

It seems odd that there are long spells where it doesn’t happen. And I don’t have a terrible headache so I think it can’t possibly be that. I haven’t had any head injuries etc, just a spinal for c section 3.5 years ago but that was quite disastrous (7 attempts to get it in). I can’t see how a spinal could cause a leak in your head though.

Even if it is spinal fluid, there’s no imminent emergency - it seems it goes undetected for years, it can lead to infections but I have no sign of one.

I would feel like an absolute pillock saying to a doctor I think I might be leaking CSF out of my nose - I mean, that sounds crazy. And I wouldn’t necessarily be able to produce a sample to test on demand.

Has anyone had anything like this? I keep thinking there must be a rational explanation that isn’t this, but I can’t find anything - surely if it was allergies or sinus issues I’d have other symptoms and it wouldn’t just be one side of my nose?

This was about an hour ago and there’s been none since. Last time it happened if I waited a couple of hours and then leaned forward, I’d get a few more drops so maybe I should see if it happens again and try to catch a sample if it does? I have a urine sample pot in the cupboard.

There are new corona cases in our county so healthcare providers are completely overwhelmed and obviously I would rather not take up an emergency appointment when it’s not an emergency. Right now I’m not immediately concerned because I feel okay. But obviously if that’s what it is I need to get checked out and possibly treated to prevent an infection happening.

I can’t tell if I’ve fallen victim to Dr Google or if I should be concerned. Have I gone completely mad? (Very possible!)

Exactly @SpinachQueen Star

AlexaAmbidextra · 09/03/2020 19:29

Wise move SinkGirl. It’s probably harmless but always best to make sure imo.

What was the cannula suggestion?

Going to go against the grain here and say it is possible for it to be cerebral/spinal fluid. I have a friend to has this and is awaiting surgery to fix it. It is possible (perhaps not likely, but possible)

Get glucose test strips from pharmacy. CSF will have glucose in it.

Absolutely could be a CSF leak.

Geoffreythecat · 09/03/2020 19:51

It’s a bright yellow liquid. Definitely not mucus. It’s liquid. I googled and read it was spinal fluid

Normal CSF isn't yellow, it has no colour.

somewheresorted · 09/03/2020 19:58

Yeah I’ve has this many a time - like water, just suddenly pours out of my nose for what seems like no reason, no cold or sinus issues. Happened last as I was walking across Sainsburys car park, totally out of the blue! I’ve never thought to get it checked...

Polkadotpjs · 09/03/2020 20:03

I’ve a friend who had this. It was spinal fluid. It was too much of a gush to be snot in her case

MMN123 · 09/03/2020 20:06

CSF can be yellow

CottonSock · 09/03/2020 20:10

No idea, but I'm fascinated to know.
My nose runs like a tap.

namechanger1234567890 · 09/03/2020 20:12

I do a lot of lumbar punctures.
CSF can be lots of different colours from clear to yellow to blood stained.

HerRoyalCarbyLess · 09/03/2020 20:13

I get this. Always from the left nostril.

I had a couple of bad bangs to the head as a teenager.
Maybe I've done more damage than I realised!

LokiLocks · 09/03/2020 20:15

Have had this due to brain injury and resulting neuro condition. It flows more if you are bent over, as you say, flows very quickly. Mine was clear although had persistent other symptoms unlike pp on thread. If it is worrying you then I would get it checked. Mine would slow down a good bit/ stop once I was standing up properly as well. Don't know if it is any help at all but that it's my experience of it.

Instatwat · 09/03/2020 20:16

I’ve always had this, although from both sides. It’s sinus fluid (google and you should see it’s exactly as you describe).

SinkGirl · 09/03/2020 20:22

When I google sinus fluid it just brings up information about sinusitis - I’ve had sinusitis before a few times and this is definitely not that.

In fact the first result I get when I search sinus fluid is about CSF.

If there’s something I’m missing please let me know.

Haven’t had any more this evening so will stop worrying for now and mention it next time I see the GP.

Get glucose test strips from pharmacy. CSF will have glucose in it.

Like blood glucose strips? My son has hypoglycaemia so I have a monitor. Or do you mean urine strips?

It's not impossible, but the red flags for me are an ME/CFS diagnosis that doesn't seem right combined with the spinal not working.

Have you ever looked at Elhers Danlos Syndrome?

FrockFrockFrockityFrock · 09/03/2020 20:26

Hmmm....so this happened to me, maybe a year or two ago. I only remembered from reading the OP. I have thought nothing of it since. I bent over and the same kind of liquid came out of one of my nostrils.

FabulouslyElegantTits · 09/03/2020 20:34

I've had this, bending over my sons cut 15 years ago ... I had raised intracranial pressure so I assume it was related, the neurologist didn't seem too concerned!

bloodywhitecat · 09/03/2020 20:35

I had this, sinus fluid with no symptoms of sinusitis. I had a 'polyp' (which turned out to be a schwannoma growing in my sinus cavity). I would get a gush of 'water' out of one nostril but had no other symptoms.

SinkGirl · 09/03/2020 21:06

That’s interesting bloody - maybe it is something like a polyp. Will ask the doctor about it.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/03/2020 21:08

Mine happens so rarely. Once or twice a year maybe.

SinkGirl · 09/03/2020 21:10

@KiddingMyself I have looked at EDS but don’t seem to particularly fit in any of the types.

I do have some very rigid muscles (very tops of thighs like steel cords and when I was going through lots of tests before I was diagnosed with endometriosis the gynaecologist I saw said my pelvic floor muscles were so solid they felt like bone). Apparently when they were tying to put my spinal in the needles kept bending - they asked if I did Pilates because my muscles were bending the needles (definitely do not do Pilates). And I have quite bendy hands and elbows. But other than that when I looked the symptoms didn’t fit.

FabulouslyElegantTits · 09/03/2020 21:12

I wasn't clear in my last post - I had a CSF leak from my nose that was related to a pre-existing neuro problem (IIH)

Grouphugs · 09/03/2020 21:47

I had this once about two weeks after a nasty sinusitis infection. I googled it and sent myself mad worrying about spinal fluid.

I'm 99% sure it was sinus fluid that had built up and released in one to when I bent over.

It was bright yellow and thin like a nosebleed.
