What is your car parking situations at work? And does it cause dramas?

I witnessed a woman in my office today losing her shit because she arrived at our work car park at 8:30 and there were no spaces left. She had to park on a residentital street somewhere, which everyone hates doing as the residents get frothy about it and everyone’s worried about their cars getting damaged.

It got me thinking though that it’s the only place I’ve ever worked that’s ever offered even limited parking, it’s usually just for managers! So I can’t complain even if does mean early starts!

So I’m curious to know what everyone else’s work parking arrangements are and if it causes as much bother as it does here!

No parking whatsoever unless you have a disability and arrange it in advance. Works ok for employees, can cause problems for visitors and contractors.

DP used to work on an industrial estate with no public transport and four parking spaces for his company. Once the company grew to over 30 employees, this was a major problem. They pioneered cycle loans but mostly the staff bribed staff in the other units.to let them park.

Mine has always been awful; we go on visits during our working day so even if you get a space first thing you never know if you’ll get one later on. There’s never enough spaces and I can waste 20 minutes driving round looking for a space

mrsbyers · 09/03/2020 17:40

There’s a 14 year wait for a space where I work but it’s all under review currently to prioritise people with long journey times not length of service. Thankfully I have allocated spot with blue badge or I’d probably be unable to work there longer term

AStarSoBright · 09/03/2020 17:42

Designated parking spaces for every employee in the adjacent car park, all paid for by the company. As it's a town centre that means free parking for shopping at the weekend too, I know I'm very lucky.

cliffdiver · 09/03/2020 17:46

School.

Parking spaces available for staff and non-parent visitors.

First come, first served (but enough for staff). No one has their own space but many have 'their' space they like to go in.

Some dramas when someone parks in someone else's 'space' Hmm

caulkheaded · 09/03/2020 17:48

School.

First come first served. There’s space in the main car park for about 1/2 staff team and another car park across the road or a couple of residential roads.

sunfloweryy · 09/03/2020 17:51

@mrsbyers a 14 year wait Shock

simonisnotme · 09/03/2020 17:52

same as ^^cliffdiver most have 'their' space, occaisonally it gets full then we just park on the very wide footpath or block someone in , usually me as i only work mornings

Mumof1andacat · 09/03/2020 17:52

I work in a hospital. Next to no parking for staff unless very very senior management or live very far away but then that's not a guarantee of a space. There is a park and ride scheme for staff but that's on permit only and if theres no permit left then you can't use it. Public transport is
Ok ish.

ClientQueen · 09/03/2020 17:53

Full parking, available to all staff, numbered spaces so we each have our own

Rockbird · 09/03/2020 17:54

School so plenty of parking although can be a pain when I have a later start and arrive at the same time as 250 odd parents!

I've always had parking, even when I worked in central London I had a key to a gated car park. It's about the only area of my life in which I've always been lucky!

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 09/03/2020 17:56

Central London. Driving here is virtually impossible, parking spaces non-existent!

MinnieMountain · 09/03/2020 17:59

4 parking spaces for the directors. That's it. Most people use a car park 10 minutes walk away.

twilightcafe · 09/03/2020 17:59

We have a staff car park. But if you arrive after 8.45 then you have to battle it out with the students for a space. Arrive after 9 am and you'll need to park outside on the street.

Aragog · 09/03/2020 18:02

No on site parking at all at my school. It's all residential roads. Some are permit parking only, others are just normal on street parking but on some steep hills. A couple of the roads have machines but short stay only, the others don't.

We have half a dozen or so parking permits which are allocated in need. I have one due to physical difficulties at times. Others have either temporary due to later pregnancy, or because they love a long way from school. Most of our staff don't.

We find that you need to arrive between about 7:55 and 8:15 for the best slots - it must be when the residents head out to work. September is always a pain as the new students we'll bring their cars. A term later they seem to leave them back at home.

TSSDNCOP · 09/03/2020 18:03

School.

First come, first served but the way the people that come immediately after the first two fuck it up for everyone, so there’s always gaps because there’s not enough swing space for people that park badly. Then there’s one obnoxious wanker that parks their giant aggressive wagon so the third tranche struggle.

Butterwhy · 09/03/2020 18:04

I used to leave home at 0530 in order to get a parking space at my old job, thankfully we could start early as well so I wasn't waiting around when I got there, but I would have rather started later. Nowhere nearby to park as all permitted, and I was thankful they had any as I know places don't. There were no direct transport links so would have had to get a bus, a train, another bus and then a walk, it was so much quicker to drive, but I moved jobs to one closer to home. I now work in a hospital and that's just another level, not looking forward to going back! Drive and park and ride for me.

Mummyshark2018 · 09/03/2020 18:05

Free nhs parking which is very unusual! Never had a problem getting a space.

EL8888 · 09/03/2020 18:08

It’s fairly far into London so 3 spaces and no one uses them

Last place l worked we had 40 parking spots for 80 people. That was fun Hmm. It was first come and first served. If you got there 8.30 or after you were unlikely to get parked and took your chances on the street -often to be hit by HGV’s

thebeatofthedrum · 09/03/2020 18:09

I work on an old converted farm where there is limited space for parking - there's nowhere offsite to park. Not really enough for everyone so we just block each other in and get people to move if we need to get out during the day. It's a happy workplace though so no stresses

BiddyPop · 09/03/2020 18:09

Very senior management (VERY) have spaces (including 4 Ministers and 2 Secretaries General (Heads of Government Departments)). Not enough for all but enough of them normally walk or cycle not to be an issue. Also 1 for the person opening the building early morning. And a spare for deliveries and VIP visitors. 16 spaces in the basement courtyard of the office.

Shared spaces on a rota existed up to 2 months ago - 20 spaces which were offered as 1 for a disabled lady (Permenant) and 19 on a rota basis (4 weeks on, and usually off for 4 weeks one cycle and 8 weeks next cycle as roughly 2.5 people per space on rota). In a car park 14 minutes walk from the office. No longer available since recently (and oh, the woes at its demise!!).

Roughly 20-30 bicycles in the basement area daily. And the rest a combination of walking, public transport or car sharing with others from other organisations (spouses, neighbours etc who have their own parking).

That latter cohort covers over 200 staff.

There are public car parks, at extortionate daily city centre rates, available locally if someone does need to drive on occasion - payable by staff themselves not the organisation.

Figgygal · 09/03/2020 18:11

Our office has about 50% of the spaces that we need based on the business Park right next to motorway it was designed to accommodate drivers

There are car share spaces and free buses available to people who live in the centre of town which are run across the business Park not just for our office.

Parking is the most contentious issue in the entire place it genuinely is a issue when we recruit and it is an issue for people leaving.

AlunWynsKnee · 09/03/2020 18:12

No parking whatsoever. You have to use a nearby car park (and pay) or travel in by some other method.

Likethebattle · 09/03/2020 18:13

I work i the city centre now do don’t need to park. At my last work it was a lottery system. People with health issues, pregnant women and car sharers were all guaranteed a space the rest were drawn at random every 6 months. If you got a space you were then not entered the next time the draw came around.

There were a handful of spaces before the barrier that you had to arrive at 6am to claim. The road leading down to the building had parked cars on either side every day making it dangerous. I witnessed a lot of people who didn’t work there parking band walking off. I wish I’d been a fly on the wall the morning they all turned up to double yellows on the road. No other parking within half a mile.

WorriedAcademic · 09/03/2020 18:14

Parking tough to find unless you get there before 8am and pretty much impossible after 8:30am. It’s staff only with a permit.

I normally cycle. If I do drive I get there for around 7am.
