What is your car parking situations at work? And does it cause dramas?

I witnessed a woman in my office today losing her shit because she arrived at our work car park at 8:30 and there were no spaces left. She had to park on a residentital street somewhere, which everyone hates doing as the residents get frothy about it and everyone’s worried about their cars getting damaged.

It got me thinking though that it’s the only place I’ve ever worked that’s ever offered even limited parking, it’s usually just for managers! So I can’t complain even if does mean early starts!

So I’m curious to know what everyone else’s work parking arrangements are and if it causes as much bother as it does here!

My old workplace was horrendous - rural location, probably about 900 employees on site, no public transport, everyone who arrived after about 7.30am had to double park, and from about 4pm most of the email traffic was "Will the owner of sG03 8xq please move... will the owner of FY65 6PZ please move..." People would sit for hours in the gridlocked carpark just to leave the site - awful! I used to cycle almost an hour each way to make sure I could leave on time. I even saw a fistfight over a space once.

I heard they have since partnered with a service called Zeelo to do private bus commuter routes just for the company and it has really helped with the parking situation. My old colleague was telling me now she walks to the end of her road and the company bus comes and picks her up. The parking situation was such a huge negative impact on productivity so I hope the buses help.

I've never worked anywhere that didn't offer parking, with the exception of four years within a stone's throw of Liverpool Street Station in London - and when I started commuting by motorbike instead of train there was always space to park my motorcycle in a bay 2 minutes walk away for free, although parking a car would have been impossible.

Aside from that I've never worked anywhere without free employee parking.

Where I work now there's also a car pool for us to use for work related journeys.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 09/03/2020 18:23

I have a space and woe betide anyone who uses it.

sofiathe2nd · 09/03/2020 18:23

University: permit parking for staff allocated by need (caring etc) and distance from work. Never had issues parking.

Apart from when I’ve worked in London all my workplaces have had a decent parking provision

Miljea · 09/03/2020 18:24

Hospital. 4 parking permits issued for each parking space. 😳 Park and Ride 1.5 miles away, full by 8 am.

If you work 9-5, you're screwed.

We can't get band 2 or 3 staff members as they aren't paid enough to leave home 7 miles away two hours before their shift starts.

I give moaning patients who have to come once every few years, if that (but are allowed to park on site) short shrift.

I pay someone to park on their driveway 10 miles away.

Miljea · 09/03/2020 18:25

10 Minutes, not miles! That would be quite a walk!

TreacherousPissFlap · 09/03/2020 18:28

The biggest issue seems to be the conversion of 8 precious spaces to charge electric cars.
These are of course in the highly coveted "close to the door" spaces, and I've yet to see anyone use one - woe betide you however if you should park in one with a normal car as a flurry of sarky emails wing their way towards you.
For peak histrionics though, we have designated car parks for late / night staff. People can park in them till X time, after that they are supposed to have moved. When they get blocked in the indignation is something truly to behold Wink

leghairdontcare · 09/03/2020 18:36

Not drama per se but a funny one.

I used to work in an office building with about 400 employees and around 50 parking spaces. The spaces were designated to managers etc and then I think HMRC changed the rules and this became a taxable benefit? So the company came up with a system where they ranked everyone in the building by seniority and length of service. This became our order of priority for parking. Number 1 was the CEO and number 2 was the woman who'd worked on the switchboard for 40 years.

itbemay1 · 09/03/2020 18:39

My own space with my name on! In london. I know I'm lucky. But I do let others park there depending on need as I'm not precious about my car and happy to walk a bit if I need to park elsewhere

AJPTaylor · 09/03/2020 18:49

I just turned down a job. It was on an office park. Not enough spaces. Ok but nowhere else to park. No residential roads, public car parks or anything. At the 3 interviews nobody could tell me a solution!

Merigoround · 09/03/2020 19:12

We have approximately one third pf the parking spaces needed when the building is full. We have to double and triple up in spaces so you might get 1 week in 3 or 1 day a week depending on your working pattern. There is no other paid parking within a mile and the roads around are all double yellow lined. The bus that ran every 10 minutes when the industrial estate was newly built now runs every 30 minutes or less if theres other traffic that stops it.
I get a lift on my non parking days as I cant walk the mile each way .

DropZoneOne · 09/03/2020 19:14

Office block on industrial estate. Allocated number of parking spaces per floor. We have 2.5 times number of staff than spaces. Night shift staff get an automatic space, as does the MD, everyone else is first come first served. The building introduced ANPR a few years ago, and as quite a few staff members are part time and others travel, the office manager calculated we could load the system with more number plates than allocated spaces, on the basis that not all spaces were getting used. Before that, it was time served, with those not onsite parking at an agreed car park 10 minutes walk away.

My previous company had only 40 spaces for over 200 staff. I rented someone's driveway in the street 5 minutes away for £10 a week!

Runnerduck34 · 09/03/2020 19:23

Atm I'm lucky that there is a big staff car park, unfortunately we are soon moving to offices with no car parking. Using public transport will more than double my journey time and cost more 😠

sixsquidswimming · 09/03/2020 19:27

Where I used to work people had regular spaces, not reserved, and new staff had to park as far away from the buildings as possible so as not to take anybodies preferred space Hmm

PurpleCrazyHorse · 09/03/2020 19:56

School, plenty of parking if people park sensibly, it also has an overflow carpark but if the weather is very rainy, it can get a bit flooded. Plenty of spaces at 8am, less by 8:30am (and way more pupils wandering around the site which is another hazard).

FaithInfinity · 09/03/2020 20:24

NHS Hospital, loads of drama. Nowhere near enough spaces. We pay for access to the car park, no guarantee of a space. It’s okay if you come in before 9 but after 9 it’s like vultures circling to get a spot. The condition of the car park is dire, no marked spaces, pot holes, poor lighting. Wherever our money goes it’s not into improving the condition of the car park! It’s parking eye too so they fine if you breach their conditions. Patients are constantly complaining about the visitor car park. It’s really awful.

pourmeanotherglass · 09/03/2020 20:31

City centre NHS Hospital. No parking at all for staff. Barely enough for patients. Lots of bike parking. No drama, but patient questionaires often complain about the lack of parking. Trust tried to get planning permission for carpark but not granted.

woodencoffeetable · 09/03/2020 20:36

no parking is provided whatsoever. there is a large parking garage nearby that charges 30€ a day (or 500 a month)
disabled/temporarily impaired people with a medical certificate can request a pass and park there and use the mobility.

MulticolourMophead · 09/03/2020 20:39

Our site is on a big business park on the outskirts of the city next to a motorway. Plenty of parking, but not designated except for directors and disabled.

Marmite27 · 09/03/2020 20:42

Over 1000 spaces and an overflow 10 minutes walk away. Still not enough spaces.

Some are ringfenced for the late finishers (after 8pm) and overnighters. Electric charging spaces can be used by non electric vehicles after 10am, then there’s car share.

It’s usually ok, apart from January because no one wants holiday and they’ve all used their flexitime in December and are in trying to build it back up again.

Everyone who’s not customer facing was asked to use overflow. I was exempt though as unable to do the walk with nursery children.

SnugglySnerd · 09/03/2020 20:47

School. Just about enough spaces for all the staff but we sometimes get blocked in by visitors. Parents evening gets a bit stressful!

painintheholeSIL · 09/03/2020 21:02

I have 3 spaces right outside my door(on street) and I always get the nearest one. Also have the option of a private car park if I want it. I work on my own😂

Glassmami · 09/03/2020 21:03

We have a very large car park, so no issues unless people park on the wonk(no lines)

lovelyupnorth · 09/03/2020 21:06

We have more spaces than staff.

TeetotalKoala · 09/03/2020 21:09

I'm in a village school with no staff car park but loads of on street parking. However, I start at 0845, and have to do battle with parents as school doesn't start until 0850. I can't get there any earlier as I drop my children at their school at 0830.

I do usually find a space without too much trouble within a one minute walk though.

DH has great fun at his place. He has to leave home by 7am or he won't get a space (gets to work around 0730). There's about 1/3 of spaces to staff. They encourage working from home, so he does that a minimum of once a week, sometimes twice.
