Songs/music which give you chills/shivers

I thought I'd start a positive thread to counter the horrible stuff going on at the moment. Yes, I have "underlying health issues," as do many of my close family, but I don't want to think about 'it' all the time!

Instead, I wondered if anyone else gets shivers or chills in their brain when they hear their favourite bits of songs. It may not be widespread, it might be a side effect of my antidepressants, a surge of serotonin?! Anyway, I was just listening to my YouTube list and, off the top of my head, found that the same bits of songs affect me in this way. In my case, in Nightswimming by REM, it's the line that goes "September's coming soon, Pining for the moon." Another one is the bit in It Must be Love by Madness where the violin comes in after the line "As soon as I wake up, every night, every day" and there are 4 rising notes played. It's weird how those particular parts affect my brain that way!
Would anyone like to share the bits of songs or music which give them shivery, pleasant feelings?

Oh yes I get this too...lots of songs have this effect on me but the ones I’ve listened to recently is Prince - How Come You Don’t Call Me (the piano intro alone does it for me) and also Diamonds and Pearls - there’s a certain part at 1:35 where he does this beautiful thing with his guitar and he and and Rosie Gaines hum and it’s just heavenly Smile

Prince aside, the other one that gives me massive chills is Emeli Sandè - My Kind of Love. I was listening to this in the car recently and her voice just soars.

May it be - Enya , sounds so magical

Katinski · 07/03/2020 17:57

Jeff Buckley singing Dido's Lament does it for me every time. Voice like an AngelStar

There is a song by Counting Crows called a on a Tuesday in Amsterdam long ago, the line is 'she is the film of the book of the story of the smell of her hair' the longing in that song of a true love lost is gut wrenching. Gets me every time

MrsGrindah · 07/03/2020 18:01

@drigon OMG I know the very bit you mean on It Must Be Love and it makes me feel exactly the same! I was a bit obsessed with it as a teenager!

The long guitar solo on Stay A Little Longer by Brothers Osborne...literally electrifying!

Unevenbeard · 07/03/2020 18:02

I feel like this with a particular chord change in imagine or the piano in karma police after "this is what you get" and the instrumental ending of Layla - perfection

missyB1 · 07/03/2020 18:06

Yep! Whenever I hear Echo and the Bunnymen “The Killing Moon”.

userabcname · 07/03/2020 18:07

Yes I do, usually if a lyric really resonates with me. My great-grandmother actually found listening to music very difficult as it made her so emotional!

ALongHardWinter · 07/03/2020 18:07

I get this with quite a few songs, but one that springs to mind is 'Tightrope' by ELO. The orchestral beginning to it is....I don't know,I can't think of the words to describe it. It's just the combination and sequence of the notes that I find so mesmerising.

As to songwords,I find the lyrics to 'Synchronicity ll' by The Police quite creepy. It's referring to the Loch Ness monster.
Many miles away there's a shadow on the door.
Of a cottage on the shore.
Of a dark Scottish loch.

@KatnissK my youngest who is 10 has always had that problem. She feels it all so deeply. We once went to an aquarium and the mood music in one room made her sob. She is a dancer so it is perfect for performing but she cries every time her best friend performs because she find the music too much

LegArmpits · 07/03/2020 18:09

Billy Bragg, Walk Away Renee. Of all the songs, this one springs to mind.

"She cut her hair and I stopped loving her."

Colinthedog · 07/03/2020 18:11

On Something Changed by Pulp where it says

‘Oh when we woke up that morning
We had no way of knowing
That in a matter of hours
We’d change the way we were going’

It’s a beautiful part of the song, but I think it also gets me because you never know at the time how much a simple decision or fleeting moment can completely change the rest of your life, and makes me think about meeting DH.

Some great answers here!

The instrumental parts in Prince's Purple Rain. It reminds me of love stories in the movies Blush

Ginger1982 · 07/03/2020 18:24

"the instrumental ending of Layla - perfection"

Oh God no, ruins the whole song. I always skip forwards at that bit!

Evanescence 'My Immortal (Band Version)' where the drums and guitars come crashing in at the end. All of 'Zombie' by The Cranberries.

squashyhat · 07/03/2020 18:26

Old gimmer here. Al Stewart's Year of the Cat "She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolour in the rain". Just beautiful.

PlomBear · 07/03/2020 18:27

Enya - Only Time

Youth Group - Forever Young

Beautiful instrumental - Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence from the film of the same name. I used to live in Singapore and the light show plays the piece. I always feel so nostalgic for the Far East and desperately homesick when I hear that.

loubieloo4 · 07/03/2020 18:28

The very end of Epic, Faith no more. The piano is haunting

Twigletgirl27 · 07/03/2020 18:36

Disturbed's version of Sound of Silence. Whole song gives me the shivers.

drigon · 07/03/2020 18:39

Agree, @Ginger1982, it is a very powerful song.
Lots of Prince love on here. I am not a big fan, but I do love Cream, by him, very sensual!
Talking of Cream, I do love the bit in White Room where Eric Clapton comes in with his wah-wah pedal bit, lovely! Also, another oldie - In Dulcie Jubilo (I think it's called!) by Mike Oldfield, where his electric guitar adds to the melody, really gorgeous.

Look at synth wave on YouTube or Spotify. You will love it.

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 07/03/2020 18:43

The guitar solos in Comfortably Numb, especially the live version where it soars even further.

PlomBear · 07/03/2020 18:44

Frightened Rabbit - the Oil Slick

There is light but there’s a tunnel to crawl through
There is love but misery loves you
We’ve still got hope so I think we’ll be fine
In these disastrous times, disastrous times

MrsSnitchnose · 07/03/2020 18:45

Anything by Il Divo. It's the combination of their gorgeous voices. I especially love their version of Halleluja, even though I've always hated that song. Adagio is rather breathtaking too

Haggisfish · 07/03/2020 18:47

@Katinski -do you have a link to that Jeff Buckley song? I adore all of his work. I love
Lilac wine. I can’t find the one you are talking about but I love that piece of music! Thanks
