Anyone else got one?

Love her to bits, but dear god, I'd like to turn round, just once, and not find her standing right behind me! She can appear to be fast asleep on the sofa and yet, the minute I stand up to go for a pee or into the kitchen or anywhere, she is up, following me.

It's like having a cross between a toddler and a really determined stalker. She has to lie, touching me at all times, on the sofa, and I'm trying to work on my laptop! If I move to the table, then she climbs up on there to lie on my mouse hand. I refuse to shut her away, but...ffs!

We ran for over five miles this morning, we've had two subsequent walks. WHY WON'T SHE JUST GO TO SLEEP AND LEAVE ME ALONE!

Anyone else?

She loves you!
What breed is she?

NotStayingIn · 06/03/2020 19:40

How long have you had her for? Mine (rescue) did that the first few months but after that she did start to do it less and less.

Bananabixfloof · 06/03/2020 19:40

Yup, two guardian dogs, follow me everywhere.
They sleep on my feet, if I move they pad alongside to the garden/kitchen/loo.
I had to get a dog Walker for a couple hours respite.

How old is your dog?

We have a youngish dog, and she sometimes gets in this sort of mood. I do think it's not unlike having a toddler, they sometimes have to be encouraged into having a nap because they get overtired.

Our dog has a large, comfortable day crate with a good soft bed. I sometimes pop her in there when she is being giddy and I know she doesn't need a wee or a walk because we've just had one. I think it helps her as it calms her down when she is over stimulated and then she does relax.

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/03/2020 19:45

She's a five year old Patterdale bitch. I've had her since she was eight weeks old and she's pretty much always been like this. It's just particularly annoying right now because I'm on a deadline and it's really really hard to work typing on my laptop with her either under my arm, on my hand, with her head on the keyboard or standing with her front paws on my shoulder.

She's fast asleep now. With her head pressed against my leg. I know that, were I to shift even slightly, she'd sit up and stare accusingly at me. I do have to admit that I may have said 'piss off and leave me alone' at her a few times today. But then I get the 'sad face' and the littel trembly whiskers and I just have to kiss her....

Grin Mine stands by my elbow and head butts my arm really hard when I'm typing. Over and over and over.

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 06/03/2020 19:51

I sincerely empathize. Have a recuse Doberman who is just like this. A part of his body has to be touching mine at all times. Argh 😤

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/03/2020 19:52

She puts her head under my arm and nudges. Repeatedly. It's got to the stage that the only place I can really get any work done, is when I'm in bed, as she sleeps out on the landing and I have my bedroom door shut. She doesn't seem to mind being away from me at night, just during the productive hours of the day!

None of my other dogs EVER behaved like this. They'd just curl up and go to sleep and occasionally pester me for a walk or biscuts. There was none of this 'Permanently On' thing.

Mine is like this, but constantly tries to pull my socks off or lick my mouth at the same time. I sometimes have to shut her out of the room to get a break. She is only 18 months though.

hillbilly · 06/03/2020 19:57

I have a cat like this 😂

missyB1 · 06/03/2020 19:57

My schnauzer has to sleep on our bed too, there is literally no escape! And that’s why she goes to daycare Grin

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/03/2020 19:58

I thought she'd grow out of it. I could understand if she was very young, or a rescue or had any other reason for being insecure, but she really doesn''t (unless she thinks I secretly prefer the cat to her...).

It might be Patterdales. My mum has one and he has to be touching her always. He loves her so much.
I'm sure it's that yours loves you too.
My spaniel has to be with me but luckily not touching.

Kaykay066 · 06/03/2020 20:04

Aw mine lies in doorways or behind me when I’m cooking, I trip over him constantly he’s huge too, Golden retriever but a bit giant soft lump. Poor soul even with us all clambering over him and accidentally stepping on paws it doesn’t stop his doorway lounging

Floralnomad · 06/03/2020 20:06

I have a patterdale x and he’s exactly the same and he’s nearly 10 , although it doesn’t have to be me , as soon as dh gets home he changes allegiance and spends the evenings attached to him .

Have you got distraction / brain game toys for her? Start using them to keep her entertained without your input.

Things like frozen stuffed Kongs or the biscuits that are hard to get to inside them. Yak milk chews, roller balls with her kibble in them, buffalo horn (instead of a bone)... That's the kind of thing I give mine to keep her quiet while I work in my office!

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/03/2020 20:10

The little bugger in question.

Maybe it is a Patterdale 'issue'. They do tend to be 'high needs' dogs...

Trouble is Cornish that she's not at all food orientated. If I give her food toys then she either buries them in the sofa or ignores them. She gets lots of free running and runs on lead with me for 30-35 miles a week, has toys and things in the house, but she's only really interested in sitting with me. She won't really even play with toys, if I pick up her ball or her pull toy she just stares at me as if I'm mad (except for about twenty minutes just after she's been fed, when she will play, and pesters me worse than usual...)

Mine is a Cocker spaniel. I've just had to shut her in her crate because she's all nutty, trampling all over me and trying to put her face in my wine. She will calm down in five mins and I'll let her out, before anyone thinks I'm a tyrant.

DaveMinion · 06/03/2020 21:26

Our last dog was a collie cross and he was constantly on the go all the time. He would pave the room constantly up down up down. He had plenty of walks and was played with all the time just had so much energy. You couldn’t take him in the car as he was a nightmare.

He wanted to be a lap dog but was too big. He was collie sized. He only slept when we did. But loved that dog. My god he was hard work though.

We have a staffy now and the difference omg. He is so easy. Sleeps for hours (he’s snoring on the sofa at the moment) but always up for a play and a long walk. Loves the car and you don’t know he’s in there with you so comes everywhere with me except in the summer (you can’t say the word car in his presence or he thinks he’s going somewhere) and he is lap dog sized. But the bond is just unimaginable. I loved our last dog but this one omg I can’t even describe it.

I do get followed to the loo though still...

plominoagain · 06/03/2020 21:53

I have one of these - a blooming Dalmatian. I adore her but MY GOD she's virtually surgically attached

poorpaws · 06/03/2020 23:24

Mine was just like this, followed me constantly. I had to have her put to sleep three weeks ago and I’m lost. Would give anything to hear her very annoying yap again.

Hovverry · 07/03/2020 20:40

A visiting friend watched my dog for an hour then asked if dogs can have ADHD!

EcoCustard · 07/03/2020 20:49

I have one, 10 years old and been like it since a pup. Very happy dog, goes places, does stuff but never leaves my side. He has been known to get under the duvet and I have woken up to his chocolate jowls next to mine 😂. His brother is close but never as close as him.
