Whichever way feels comfortable.

Left

Let me ask you this if you didn't have a knife with your fork what hand would you be using ? Usually right for right handed people , but then why would you switch when you get a knife

Left for the right handed, right for the left handed is the norm

mrbob · 06/03/2020 10:12

It is just how it is! If you are right handed use your fork in your left hand if you have a knife and fork. If you are just using a fork it goes in the right

TeapotCollection · 06/03/2020 10:12

Because if you’re using a knife you’re probably cutting food up, for which you need your strongest hand

DGRossetti · 06/03/2020 10:14

Isn't handedness a spectrum ?

minipie · 06/03/2020 10:14

When laying the table fork goes on left.

You put the fork in your left and knife in right as your right (dominant) hand is doing the hard work of cutting and your left is only holding the food still.

If you’re only using a fork, no cutting, then the fork swaps to right (assuming you are right handed) although some sticklers will say you should always use fork in left hand.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 06/03/2020 10:16

Proper etiquette is fork on the left. But if I'm eating with just a fork I don't normally bother to set the table so it doesn't go on a side.

A proper place setting should be fork, plate, knife, spoon.

Horehound · 06/03/2020 10:17

The "correct" way is fork in left, knife in right.

However, if we were having spaghetti or pasta and no knife us required I'd use my dominant hand, which for me, is my right.

Megan2018 · 06/03/2020 10:17

Dominant hand for knife.

I am right handed and can eat with a fork in either hand but can’t use a knife with my left.

BigFatLiar · 06/03/2020 10:18

In terms of layout. Forks to the left, knives and soup spoons to the left, desert to the top. Use the cutlery out to in i.e. from the outside starter, fish course, main course.

Which hand you use is a matter of preference.

AmandaGrayson · 06/03/2020 10:18

The thing is I'm right handed but I use my knife in my left hand this weird ?

alittlepieceofme · 06/03/2020 10:20

I use my knife in my left hand, I've tried the other way but I can't do it! I am right handed.

Ginfordinner · 06/03/2020 10:21

Left for the right handed, right for the left handed is the norm

This ^^

IMO there is no etiquette because it depends on whether you are left or right handed. The norm is to lay the table with the fork on the left as most people are right handed. I couldn't care less which hand people use their fork in, and never notice anyway.

AmandaGrayson do you cut your food with your left hand? Maybe you are ambidextrous?

HappydaysArehere · 06/03/2020 10:26

When laying a table it is correct to put fork on the left, it is up to the user how they wish to eat.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 06/03/2020 10:29

My mil always set the table backwards so DH did too. The funny thing is that DH always sat down and switched but his brothers rolled with it and eat backwards. One BIL is left handed the other right handed.

In an argument knife right is right but it's honestly just a matter of preference irl

DGRossetti · 06/03/2020 10:33

Same here. Only many years have taught me I'm not exclusively right handed ... first time I went to use a bow and arrow, the instructor noted I was doing it left handed - although it felt natural to me. Right now I'm using a mouse left-handed. Buttons and all (which was a great way to keep your PC to yourself in an office Grin)

Handedness is fascinating and innate. But people tend to be on a spectrum.

drina27 · 06/03/2020 10:35

Left, of course.

TheQueensCousin · 06/03/2020 10:36

Right if no knife.

Skyejuly · 06/03/2020 10:36

Right

Enb76 · 06/03/2020 10:37

Fork lightening, knife rightening - is how I learned it.

At least for table laying, what you do when they knife and fork are in your hand is up to you.

HeronLanyon · 06/03/2020 10:40

I am left handed for writing painting ironing stirring serving (except tongs).
Right hand is dominant for almost everything else.
Fork and spoon = left.
Knife right.
Fork always left whether there’s a knife involved or not.

afrikat · 06/03/2020 10:47

Left is the 'proper' way but I've never been able to eat that way despite being right handed. Whatever is most comfortable - no point trying to force it
