I’m 7 months pregnant, my anxiety is increasing daily about a multitude of things.

I don’t have any books left to read and anywhere I go online is doom and gloom

I used to like the shopaholic books when I was much younger and I read the odd Marian Keyes.

Is there something new that you would heartily recommend someone who just needs something to take their mind off the real world for the next few weeks at least?

Why Mummy Drinks made me laugh lots.

I always turn to the James Herriot books when I'm feeling anxious or low, I find them so comforting and they're funny too.

Lord of the Rings is a really comforting read for me too, although I might be odd!

Eva Ibbotson the secret countess

D E Stevenson Miss Buncel Book ( the first of a lovely series of four books)

Winifred Watson Miss Pettigrew lives for a day

Much longer The Pallisers Antony Trollope

Enjoy

If you use kindle/audible you can read, then listen if you need to do something.

Gerald Durall (sp?) Always makes me laugh particualy My Family And Other Animals had me in stitches.

Bill Bryson is also very good , Notes from a small island ( about him walking around the UK) is very good and it's always nice to read about somewhere you know.

For fiction I’d go for either Jane Green’s Bookends or Kathryn Wallace - Absolutely Smashing It. For non fiction try Graham Norton - Life and Loves of a He Devil, Sarah Millican - How to be Champion or Paul Ogrady’s autobiographies (the first and second parts particularly)

All of these have cheered me up no end when feeling low and I’ve reread all of them at different points too.

I laughed aloud recently at Sue Townsend's 'The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year.' (And I'm not usually one to read funny books!)

Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man by Fannie Flagg.

TenCornMaidens · 05/03/2020 20:21

All the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books.

Speminalium · 05/03/2020 20:23

I just read the Tent the Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy and I chortled so loudly I woke up my baby.

ParkheadParadise · 05/03/2020 20:24

Rachel's Holiday - Marian Keyes I've lost count the number of times I've re-read this.

IvinghoeBeacon · 05/03/2020 20:26

Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch

Annebronte · 05/03/2020 20:29

Angela Thirkell. Start with ‘High Rising’. Very very funny and also very well written.

Fingerbobs · 05/03/2020 20:41

Elton John’s autobiography made me laugh out loud. Crazy Rich Asians was great (and there are two more). For ‘hot water bottle books’ try Samantha Ellis ‘How To Be A Heroine’ and Lucy Mangan ‘Bookworm’ which reflect on childhood books and are lovely. And ‘Enchanted April’ by Elizabeth Von Arnim is perfect escapism. Second many of the above, too. And I also loved ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’ for an afternoon with a cream egg.

TheMemoryLingers · 05/03/2020 20:46

They won't be new, but anything by Sue Townsend.

AlCalavicci · 05/03/2020 21:49

@TenCornMaidens,
I listened to the ladies detective agency many years ago on what was BBC radio 7 I loved it , I had no idea it was also a book

LangClegsOpinionIsNoted · 05/03/2020 21:51

How do you feel about fantasy? Pratchett's Discworld books are great. Go with the ones about the witches or the city watch.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 05/03/2020 21:56

Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series beginning One For The Money. And I second Rachel’s Holiday - have read it so many times.

ThisHereMamaBear · 05/03/2020 21:58

I second Rachel's holiday and bill bryson notes from a small island

KnightandDay · 05/03/2020 22:00

If you like Shopaholic, have you read 'Can you keep a secret?' Also by Sophie Kinsella. Nice and easy reading.

MoaningMinniee · 05/03/2020 22:01

My most recent accidental discovery while trawling around the e-books for something cheap or better still free was Emily Larkin. 'Unmasking Miss Appleby' was genuinely brilliant. No cliffhangers at the end to make you feel compelled to buy next book in series... although I would, they've all been fantastic.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 05/03/2020 22:05

I love India Knight's funny books - Don't you want me? Is great

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 05/03/2020 22:29

Cold Comfort Farm is always comforting. I think they should film it with Gemma Arterton as Flora Poste, then I could die happy.

Geekster1963 · 05/03/2020 23:50

I second the No 1 ladies detective agency books. Lovely books and a gentle read.

AmericanAdventure · 05/03/2020 23:58

Marian Keyes new book "Grown Ups" is out.
I liked it. Also like Mhari McFarlane, Ben Aaronovich, and the St Mary's books about time travel... So annoying that I can't remember the authors name.

AmericanAdventure · 05/03/2020 23:58

Jodi Taylor

UnitedRoad · 06/03/2020 00:02

I think you’d like Jill Mansell books.
