Do you have a dining table?

I’m torn between having an island with seating ... or no island and just a table

Dining table (in dining room). No table or seating in the kitchen though.

QuintusEstInHorto · 05/03/2020 14:35

Kitchen table in the kitchen, dining table in dining room!

We use the kitchen table for 99% of our meals though.

LoisLittsLover · 05/03/2020 14:37

How old are your children? Imo bar stools aren't that comfortable for any significant periods of time so if you tend to have long dinner with friends an island might not be great. Also, young children on bar stools at an island might be quite tricky.

Have both if you can. We use the island for coffee and sometimes breakfast, table for meals.

inwood · 05/03/2020 14:40

Ideally both but if it was one or the other I'd have to go with the table and lose the island. Bar stools aren't comfy, can't imagine having eg Christmas dinner on them.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 05/03/2020 14:40

I'd choose a table over an island with stools

WhatHaveIFound · 05/03/2020 14:45

We have a open plan living/dinign/kitchen with one big table. No seating in the kitchen area (am not a fan of breakfast bars) so DC send to sit on the island if they want to chat whilst i'm cooking.

WildflowerChild · 05/03/2020 14:47

Here are the proportions ... in the corner of the room I really wanted a snug,

But I don’t know if a table would be too cramped?

I feel like I’d have to sacrifice the island for a table

Do you think it would really cramped? Better in 3D

Would a folding table be an option if you really need one? Either way I’d go for the snug instead of the island personally

catinb0oots · 05/03/2020 14:51

Would you have a table in another room as well as t he island?

TeapotCollection · 05/03/2020 14:53

Now I’ve seen the second picture I’d definitely go for snug and table, even if it has to be a folding one

Looks absolutely gorgeous 😊 bet you’re excited 😆

Krong · 05/03/2020 14:57

I would put one against the same wall as sofa, so there is space to walk through, but pull it out to the centre if you have guests. Obviously needs to be quite slim.

I don't think you have space for an island really.

inwood · 05/03/2020 14:58

Seeing the images I'd definitely lose the island.

AngelNix · 05/03/2020 15:05

Is that all the kitchen units that you have? The tap appears to be on top of the oven!

WildflowerChild · 05/03/2020 15:07

I think it’s just I always wanted an island

Hang on I might try another design

We have island with seats and dinning table, we had just the island for 6 months while it was doable I was glad to finally get a dining table. I found sitting at the island fine for eating but if I wanted to sit down at table and do anything at the table it wasn't particularly comfortable.

My DC can comfortably sit at the island on a wide seat.

Bluntness100 · 05/03/2020 15:09

I used to have a dining table. We ditched it when the kitchen was redone and put an island in. Makes a better use of the space and looks fantastic, it blends in.

The stools are not uncomfortable. We have ones with a high back, deeply padded and heavy. It’s the small ones with no or a low back that is the issue.

willowstar · 05/03/2020 15:10

You can get really comfortable high chairs that work well for islands, however, I agree with others that you would be better off with a table up against the wall. We have this and it is fine for every day for the four of us and we pull it out in to the room when we have people round.

HaddawayAndShite · 05/03/2020 15:13

Dining table but no seating in kitchen. I personally wouldn’t get bar stools as they’re a pain in the arse for my 5foot self to climb up and never comfortable.

LuckyLickitung · 05/03/2020 15:14

From the picture with an island, it looks like you would struggle to open the cupbord/ applience doors and be able to manouver around them.

Table against the wall. More versatile and flexible.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 05/03/2020 15:24

Tape the dimensions you're thinking about for furniture/islands etc on your floor - I think I've seen George Clarke do this before? Then you can visually see how much roomyou'll have.

Looking at your image I don't think there's anywhere near enough room for an island how it currently is. Would you even be able to open the oven door stood in front of it? I think you're meant to have at least a metre space round all sides of an island..

SavoyCabbage · 05/03/2020 15:27

The whole kitchen is only 3m wide.

nosleepp · 05/03/2020 15:27

I have a dining table but no seating space in the kitchen. I’d go for a table up against the wall

WildflowerChild · 05/03/2020 15:29

Does that look better?

And then I could maybe have stools fitted underneath where the base sticks out?
