Would a north facing garden put you off?

Found a good house, ticks majority of boxes.

It does however have a north facing garden. I’m not a gardener so won’t be growing anything ... but would be nice to sit out in the summer

Yes. It would put me off.

moveandmove · 02/03/2020 22:06

Yes it would put me off too.

DramaAlpaca · 02/03/2020 22:06

It would put me off for certain.

Coffeeandcrumpet · 02/03/2020 22:07

We have a north facing garden it's ok but I would prefer south or west facing. We lose the sun in the evening too early for my liking.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2020 22:07

Wouldn’t even cross my mind to check.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 02/03/2020 22:08

I had a north facing garden in my last house. The issue was that it was wide but not long so the house put the garden in shadow for some
Of the year. The lounge was at the back of the house so was really dark and gloomy.

Somanysocks · 02/03/2020 22:08

Mines north facing, it's fine and gets evening sun on the patio which is lovely with a glass of wine.

ShivaDestroyerOfEvil · 02/03/2020 22:08

No definitely not. My garden faces north and isn't very big. Its still too hot at certain times of the day on the eastern side. I have got two cantilever umbrellas, one at each end which I use at either ends of the day.

The area near the house is so sunny in the evenings I am looking at one of those shade sail things.

My neighbour sunbathes ... with not much clothing on in his north facing garden!

ShirazSavedMySanity · 02/03/2020 22:08

Yes, would put me off.

Depends how big it is. If small then yes, if big then no. Ours is big enough that we get loads of sun in the rest of the garden and during the day our patio is cool (quite nice when hot) but we get the evening sun. I really like it for our size of plot but wouldn’t do it with a small garden that was totally in the shade.

KaptenKrusty · 02/03/2020 22:10

I’ve lived in rentals for the last 8 years with either no outside space at all, or else north facing balcony or garden! Feel like it’s useless in a way as I can’t sit in in much it’s gets shady and cold quickly :(

My parents have a south facing garden and I just dream of visits to their house to sit in the garden - you can’t get me inside haha! (I even went to stay at theirs for a week while they were away just because I craved the garden so much haha

We are about to buy our first home and as a result I wouldn’t consider north facing now.

But maybe you don’t love sitting out as much as me !

WildflowerChild · 02/03/2020 22:16

I can’t post a photo of it! It’s not very big

This is a house on the same street

Yes it would be a deal breaker for me unless the garden was large enough to get some sun all year round.

ElsasSalamander · 02/03/2020 22:19

Mine’s north facing but big & so gets the sun for most of the day. So for a big garden no it wouldn’t put me off. If it were small garden & likely to be in the shadow of the house then it would put me off.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 02/03/2020 22:20

It’s a terrace so not even the chance of getting any sun from the side. Definite no for me.

MissPoldark · 02/03/2020 22:20

At the height of summer (June/July) a north facing garden is good for evening sun as it sets in the north west at that time of year.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 02/03/2020 22:21

And if there is any concrete it will be permanently green.

RossPoldarkFan · 02/03/2020 22:21

With the hotter summers we have had, especially in 2018, I would love to have a north facing garden. Lots of plants died that summer despite frequent watering. It was much too hot to sit outside. Last year was cooler but still too hot in a sheltered south facing garden. As you are further north, it may be less of an issue.

MissPoldark · 02/03/2020 22:21

You always get some sun somewhere, it’s just not usually directly on the back of the house.

ParkheadParadise · 02/03/2020 22:21

Yes it would put me off

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 02/03/2020 22:22

Ours is north facing terrace. You can't hang any washing out for 9 months of the year. It just doesn't dry.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/03/2020 22:23

yes it would definitely put me off. My parents had a house with a north facing garden until recently. The garden was really big so there was always somewhere sunny but the back of thr house was always cold and dark.

It's a deal.breaker for me and for most people I know.

chesterfuckingdrorrs · 02/03/2020 22:23

Our garden is north/north east. It's not perfect but it still gets a fair amount of sun thanks to being end terrace and a reasonable size. My only issue is the sun is away by 1900 but that's really not the end of the world.
