Would a north facing garden put you off?

Found a good house, ticks majority of boxes.

It does however have a north facing garden. I’m not a gardener so won’t be growing anything ... but would be nice to sit out in the summer

Yes but it wouldn't be a deal breaker if everything else was great.

Firecracker2019 · 03/03/2020 09:21

Not at all. Ours faces NE and is plenty sunny enough for me. The back of the house still gets too hot in summer.

Firecracker2019 · 03/03/2020 09:21

We have a regular window and french doors in the kitchen and two sky lights. It's most definitely not dark or cold.

nagynolonger · 03/03/2020 09:28

I could cope in the summer but in the winter it would be damp and gloomy. Very mossy if you had any tree cover too.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 03/03/2020 09:30

We moved from a south facing garden to north facing because I hated it. Part of the problem was huge windows and doors straight into the kitchen so it was unbearable in the height of summer.

Our new garden is long enough to get sun most of the day, a lot in the morning then it gets further down the garden as the day goes on. The washing line is at the end so no problems with drying. Our lounge gets nice and warm in the winter sun too which is a bonus of a south facing front.

My first house was a small terrace with a small north facing garden. I hated it and would never have another.

RosehipRuthie · 03/03/2020 09:50

It would put me off, but also depends on the overall size of the garden and position of neighbouring buildings, large trees etc.
Mine is south facing but smallish and a surprising amount of it is in the shade for much of the day due to the position of neighbours' trees, a high brick wall at the bottom and neighbouring houses which are offset, blocking the sun. (On the plus side, it's fairly sheltered from the wind!)

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 03/03/2020 10:27

Ours is north facing and I never go in it. Instead I sit on the front doorstep which is south facing (although there's no garden) as it's much warmer. So our garden is a bit of a waste of space.

dreamingofsun · 03/03/2020 11:16

surprised how many dont like north facing. We like ours. Our old house was south facing and you baked if it was sunny, and fought over any tiny bit of shade you could find. Now we sit comfortably on the patio relaxing in the shade. And either the front or back of the house is going to be south facing so surely it doesnt affect light levels overall?

NomDeQwerty · 03/03/2020 11:18

Definitely. I wouldn't even view it.

InOtterNews · 03/03/2020 11:27

Depends on how long the garden is.

I have a North facing garden. I've given up on growing a lush green lawn (now patio all over). But I can sit out during the day (sun hits the far end first thing and mid-way by lunchtime). The shade immediately by the back door provides much-needed respite on a hot day. I also grow tomatoes/courgettes etc no problem (in pots).

idontwanttogoooooooooooo · 03/03/2020 11:48

North garden here, it's fine. Cold in the winter of course, but fine in summer. The south is the front of the house and yes brighter in the mornings. Length of garden is to the west and gets great sun due to no buildings.

Katyy · 03/03/2020 16:22

Definate deal breaker for me. Our lounge faces southwest and I love it, it’s never gloomy. The only downside is it’s difficult watching tv in the sun, but outside you can always get some shade under an parasol.

MissPoldark · 03/03/2020 17:02

Surely it depends on the layout of the house too. Most back gardens are also where the kitchen is, but IMO with a south facing garden the kitchen just gets too hot.
I prefer a sunny living room to a sunny kitchen.

It really irks me that new houses are still built without any consideration for making the most of heat & light from the sun. Ideally, a house would have no northerly aspect at all.

BarbedBloom · 03/03/2020 17:29

We have one and hate it. The neighbor has giant sycamores though which doesn't help. It is always damp and we get very little light. I love gardening and am limited as to what plants we can have too, though I am your woman if you want any kind of mint Grin

Last summer when we had the heatwave I was sat out in the garden feeling cold. The kitchen is also really dark and we have to have the light on during the day

Poetryinaction · 03/03/2020 18:56

Our last house had a large N facing garden. In the winter we lost the sun about 1pm, but in Summer not until 7pm. It was well used.
Now we have a large S facing garden. It is fan but we have a garage halfway down it, so there isn't enough sun or breeze in the winter to dry clothes outside.
It wouldn't put me off.

EmrysAtticus · 03/03/2020 19:46

We have a North facing garden. It doesn't get sun in the late autumn, winter and early spring but we wouldn't be out in it at that time of year anyway as where we live it rains a lot during those months.

In the late spring, summer and early autumn I find it a lovely balance of sun and shade. The patio has sun in the morning so lovely to sit out for breakfast and then by the full heat of the day at lunch it is in shade so you can sit out and eat still then. At that point the grass and beds have sun. I can't stand strong, direct sunlight and faint if out in it for too long so it is perfect for me.

We are in a new build and have painted our north facing kitchen diner a lovely bright colour so even in winter it isn't cold or dull.

jitterbugintomybrain · 03/03/2020 19:48

Yes definitely. Have been there and it makes a massive difference having a south facing one imho.

CheekyMango · 03/03/2020 19:50

@WildflowerChild download SunPositionMap it shows you where the sun goes during the day relevant to any point on the map. Absolute life saver when we bought houses as I love a sunny garden. You can work out using logic and aerial photo on Google and the map to see if it's too shady.

CheekyMango · 03/03/2020 19:50

Sorry should have said its an app x

Igottastartthinkingbee · 03/03/2020 19:55

Depends on the size and shape of it. Ours is north facing but it’s longer than it is wide so there’s always sun somewhere on the garden during the summer. Ours isn’t over looked either and the gaps between the neighbouring houses are quite big. So sun shines through the gaps in the morning too.

Meme05 · 03/03/2020 20:09

Wouldn’t think to check tbh.
Not keen on sitting in the garden though so that’s probably why it wouldn’t be high on the list

OverlyLeafy · 03/03/2020 20:29

It would be an absolute no for me but I'm a keen gardener.

Lardlizard · 03/03/2020 20:34

Yes I’d never buy a house with a north facing garden
Or a house with no bath or space for one

Or on a busy road or overlooked

These are the deal breakers

maddy68 · 03/03/2020 20:37

I live in a fabulous north facing house. It's beautiful but I hate it. I want a sunny garden
