I am getting too involved in the corona virus threads so wanted to start something lighthearted!

Went to visit DSis recently. She bought a wine box. I have bought the odd one in the past and once the little tap stopped producing wine just threw it out. I did not realise that there is nearly a whole bottle of wine left in the bag at that point! I felt really stupid but now view it as “free” wine given I would have thrown it away!

What silly things didn’t you realise until someone pointed it out to you?

I've been on and off mumsnet for about 10 years. I always thought the acronym STBXH stood for STupid Bastard eX Husband.

I always thought it a bit OTT and then it was explained as Soon To Be eX Husband, I felt a tad stupid.

DropYourSword · 02/03/2020 00:17

It’s popcorn in our house @blueharry, accompanied by a finger mouth pop.

ThunderPython · 02/03/2020 00:18

@DropYourSword how is it pronounced? Am also from NW.

I'd say "tor-toice" (to rhyme with voice" same with Porpoise.....

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 02/03/2020 00:18

Not convinced by the club sandwich one. Where are you getting your facts??

Narikk333 · 02/03/2020 00:21

Only realising today that the Elgin marbles are actually not little round marbles but actual marble sculptures...

DropYourSword · 02/03/2020 00:22

@ThunderPython

I’ve always pronounced it like tor-toys

It’s supposed to be tor-tus

I even googled it because I couldn’t believe it was true

TeetotalKoala · 02/03/2020 00:24

Tor-tus is correct. You have me doubting my porpoise pronunciation now though...

Cloudyyy · 02/03/2020 00:24

There is only one type of Bell pepper... the green, yellow, orange, red colours come from varying degrees of ripeness.

Arthritica · 02/03/2020 00:25

A Club sandwich is not “chicken lettuce under bacon”

That’s a retro-fit. It’s a sandwich (frequently with 3 pieces of bread) with chicken or turkey, bacon or ham, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato and often mustard.

Its name comes from the New York Gentleman’s Club that created it in the 1880s (disputed between the Union Club and less likely Saratoga Club)

ThunderPython · 02/03/2020 00:25

@DropYourSword OMG. I've been saying it wrong all my life! I need to lie down.

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/03/2020 00:25

I was politely told by my DB that raccoons don't live in the UK. It was a dead badger. It never crossed my mind that raccoons didn't live here!

The live action version of 101 Dalmations drove us all barmy here!

Kids - What are they?
Me- Racoons
Kids- Do we have racoons in [the midlands town we live in]
Me- No, we dont have them in Britain at all
Me & Kids - Huge rant about how Disney thinks that America is the whole sodding world

managedmis · 02/03/2020 00:26

Mardi Gras = Shrove Tuesday

Confused

I reckon a lot of people would prefer your version! 😂😂😂

DropYourSword · 02/03/2020 00:28

@TeetotalKoala if you say it to rhyme with how you say tortoise, you’re all good. I didn’t! Blush

Itsashame · 02/03/2020 00:31

The Difference between Vodka and Gin. ... While vodka is made from by distillation of potatoes, rye or wheat, gin is made with the help of distillation of malt or grain and then mixed with the flavor of juniper berries. The main constituent of Vodka is water and ethanol while the central part of Gin is Juniper berries.
Gin is not vodka

SallyLovesCheese · 02/03/2020 00:32

I've only just realised in the last couple of days that when people talk about online dating and OLD, they're not referring to an apparently very popular website for mature singles, but OLD stands for OnLine Dating.

I genuinely thought there was a website called old.com or something and was amazed how popular it was, judging by how often I see it on here! Blush

TeetotalKoala · 02/03/2020 00:33

@DropYourSword Well blow me. Both DH and I have been saying it wrong.

Cloudyyy · 02/03/2020 00:37

What at about pronunciation of turquoise?

mrsBtheparker · 02/03/2020 00:41

Surely that’s something they’d teach you in school!

You were probably taught a lot of stuff you've forgotten, you would certainly have been taught that!

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/03/2020 00:41

Turr coy (like the fish) z

AcrossthePond55 · 02/03/2020 00:41

@ThunderPython I like your STBX meaning better.

On other fronts, ahem, the little piggy went shopping!!! My childhood picture book shows her with a housecoat and a flowery headscarf carrying a basket. My sainted mother would NEVER buy me a book with a LIE in it!!! End. of. Discussion. Grin

My 'Ah-HA' moment was when I realized that driving barefoot was not illegal. My dad always insisted that shoes be worn. Sandals or flip flops were not acceptable. We were always at the beach and I always put on a damned pair of shoes to drive home, lest I get a ticket!

I still like to drive barefoot.

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/03/2020 00:42

Another vote for STupid Bastard Ex here!!

BlueHarry · 02/03/2020 00:43

Hahaha that reminds me of when I used to think Tia was either a popular name amongst mumsnetters, or a very prolific poster. Then one day I realised it means "Thanks in advance"!

NoMoreDickheads · 02/03/2020 00:55

I was gonna say that I didn't realize my ex was using me for sex, but that's probably too serious.

Erm..

When I first heard of the 'underground railroad,' until my mate told me I was wrong, I thought it was an actual underground railway. Grin Grin

NoMoreDickheads · 02/03/2020 00:56

My mum was there as well, so it was really embarrassing as they're both so much more knowledgeable than me I sound thick as a brick lol.
