Help , cat has wee’d on my mattress

Our cat is a bugger, any chance and she’s up the stairs to wee on a bed. I’ve lost count of how many duvets I’ve thrown out. We normally keep our bedroom doors shut, but every now and then she charges upstairs before we can catch her. I thought mine was shut this evening , obviously not . I had my duvet folded back to let my bed air a bit and she’s wee’d on it . One pillow is ruined, so is the duvet and my mattress is soaked. She’s got a litter tray , so why she chooses the beds I’ve no idea . I really can’t afford a new mattress, how can I get the smell out ?

Dry as much as possible then try bicarbonate of soda until it’s dry.

AnotherEmma · 28/02/2020 22:11

New mattress and waterproof mattress protector.
There's no way I'd sleep on a mattress after cat piss got into it.
Also, take your cat to the vet for some advice and to rule out a medical cause. Maybe post in the litter tray section too.

AnotherEmma · 28/02/2020 22:12

PS Why throw out the duvets, aren't they machine washable?

White vinegar works.

Sofacat · 28/02/2020 22:14

I can’t afford a new mattress, this one is only 2 years old and there’s no way one would fit into my machine. It’s cheaper to buy a new one than dry cleaning.

When my cat did a shit on my duvet (yep 😱) I just took it to the launderette. The duvet, not the cat.

madcatladyforever · 28/02/2020 22:17

My 18 year old girl likes to poo on the bedroom floor. She isn't incontinent she just sleeps very very deeply and wakes up too late to use the tray. She always looks so upset about it.
I couldn't survive without my mini spot cleaner and I have a steam cleaners too to go over the area. Great on mattresses too.

Sofacat · 28/02/2020 22:18

I’m working all weekend so can’t get to a laundrette until Monday.

Ours has started doing this but only on my husbands side!!!

I soaked up all I could, then got some Urine Off spray and scrubbed then dried again.

Our Tempur pillows, washed covers and dried moisture up then bicarbonate soda.

Took the duvet to laundrette, good as new.

RNBrie · 28/02/2020 22:20

Take the duvet and pillows to a dry cleaners. They should be able to launder them properly. (Www.Ihateironing.com will collect, clean and return but only in London I think)

Mattress, there are some sprays you can buy on Amazon to help remove the smell. I'd definitely do the bicarb thing whilst you're waiting for it to arrive.

Once everything is clean, try giving your cat some treats on your bed and playing with her on the bed. You need to change the association of bed = Litter tray!!

Sofacat · 28/02/2020 22:20

I’ve got a floor steam cleaner - I’ll give that a go . I have to get up early for work tomorrow, I can really do without this !

Are you single or do you have a partner who could sort it while you're at work?

It's just that you mention "we" so I'm guessing partner unless you have children who are old enough to leave alone while you work...

mypoorfurbaby · 28/02/2020 22:24

My kittens went through this phase.
We swapped cat litter, clean it out after every visit' and added an extra one to the upstairs bathroom.

We have a vax hoover and I've backed the mattress about 4 times before the stain has gone. The vets will sell a spray that kills the smell dead.
I also purchased some catnip spray and covered the beds and duvets in that. I encouraged supervised play on the beds with treats to try and change the association with toilet and bed.
Deli way diffusers in the upstairs bed areas as well.

We tried several different cat litters and eventual settled on an expensive wood based one. It clumps does wee can be removed easily, doesn't smell and can be topped up rather than replaced.
Much nicer all around and the cats were happier.

I’m single, I have an adult dd , who has selfishly gone away for the weekend Smile

Darn well at least you can sleep in her bed tonight Wink

Sofacat · 28/02/2020 22:30

The cat uses the litter tray if she knows we’re watching her. If she spots a chance she legs it upstairs. I chased after her once and managed to grab her just as she started to wee , which resulted in a trail of piddle across the floor as I carried her into the bathroom 😩

You need a good waterproof mattress protector. Cat weed on my sons bed and was fine as waterproof protector. All washable too.

MrsBlondie · 28/02/2020 22:41

Ps I'd also take her to the vets. Might have water infection

Sofacat · 28/02/2020 22:53

She also poos if she gets the chance.

My cat did this recently on spare bed. Lots of stressful things happening (new kittens in house, new cat flap). Are there any sources of stress that trigger your cat to do this? It's fairly unusual behalf Inna happy healthy cat
.

PhilipJennings · 28/02/2020 22:58

I had a cat who used to do that. Always our bed, usually on DH's feet if he could get in during the night. Also suitcases. Ours, SIL's, my parents', and any visitors had to be reminded to store it upright and zipped shut for the duration of their stay.

There's an enzyme odour remover you can buy from pets at home, it comes in a green bottle. I think it's Simple Solution? Get the 4-litre size, you'll need it. You soak up as much of the wee as you can with a towel first, then douse the spot in the cleaning liquid, let it fully soak through and then air dry.

A good waterproof mattress protector will help. But buy two, because the cat will definitely piss on your bed when the other one is in the wash.

Sofacat · 28/02/2020 23:33

I’ve just ordered an enzyme spray from Amazon , it should get here by tomorrow and I can hopefully get to a Dunelm in my lunch break to buy a mattress protector.

There’s nothing that has changed at home so I can’t see stress being the cause . She seems to go through phases of doing this. She’ll use the litter tray quite happily and then decide to use our beds.

Had the same with my highly anxious cat, apparently soiling my bed shows she loves me and feels safe with me. 🙁

We used the method suggested by e-how. It took a couple of weeks. Sluiced the mattress with water then washed the area with biological liquid. Repeat over a number of days. Up-end mattress, leave on towels by radiator. We used a dehumidifier. Cat is not allowed in room on her own now.

Vet suggested the room ban and more structured play with cats in the evening. Peeing cat is new addition, stressed rescue cat and existing cat, also rescue, not impressed.

Mattress very clean and stink free. We did trash the wallpaper with drying mattress in the room.

Most serviced launderettes do duvets. Not worth it for a £10 duvet but good for a decent one. Sta kill spray (check amazon) gets rid of urine smells. Vinegar does a reasonable job of neutralising (bicarb is for puke).

Keep your door shut.
