car crash

hi there guys! hopefully this is the right place to post this

Around 4 hours ago I was involved in a car accident, a car at about 10-15mph bumped into the back of me. It has caused minor damage and my car and no damage on his car.

Unfortunately in the heat of the moment I only took a picture of his reg and got his phone number. There is hardly any damage on either car and he is denying all responsibility.

Is it worth going through the insurance? I am ok and there is no damage to either car. Even if I did, I only took a picture of his reg because there was no damage at all.

If I was to make a claim, he would dispute it, are the odds that nothing will come out of it due to the lack of evidence and the fact I've only got his phone number, reg and nothing else?

thank you!

I would report what happened to your insurance company. You don’t know what he’ll do next. He might say you caused it.

Kinneddar · 28/02/2020 18:48

If theres no damage and you're not making a claim theres no way I'd inform my insurance company. I'm sure I've read that even that can cause an increase in your policy

jessica2222 · 28/02/2020 19:09

If I were to make a claim, do you think anything would come from it, especially with the insufficient evidence I have?

You pay insurance for a reason.

Call them, give them the details, let them do the rest.

You cannot assess damage by simply looking at the bumper. Were you hurt? Whiplash?

Be very careful if you don't report it that it doesn't bite you on the arse. A lot of policies have a clause where if you don't report working X amount of time the excess rises. So if you find damage later or need time off work etc due to neck/back problems it could be more costly.

I never understand why people are so reluctant to use the service they pay for. Yes sometimes your premium rises, although tbh he drive into the back of you so that's pretty much his fault. And even if the premium does rise, if you have had a claim and used the service, that's also reasonable.

midwestspring · 28/02/2020 19:19

If your car is reasonably modern you have no idea what the level of damage is just by looking.
You need to report this to your insurance provider, they can take it from there.

MummaGiles · 28/02/2020 19:22

If you don’t report this and then you have another accident this policy year (or in future policy years if you continue to fail to disclose it) that you do wish to claim for, your insurance may very well void your policy altogether.

CalleighDoodle · 28/02/2020 19:27

Report. Also it has been 4 hours. You dont know how much you'll hurt tomorrow.

Ginger1982 · 28/02/2020 19:31

If he ran I go the back of you then it would usually be his fault. What was his reasoning to say it wasn't?

jessica2222 · 28/02/2020 19:35

@ginger1982

He just wasn't accepting responsibility for it. Even though it was clearly his fault. I will make a claim I just want to know how likely it is he'll get in trouble for it.

Surely with no damage and no witnesses, it's my word against his?

Plastic 'bounces'.

You have no idea about the damage under the bumper.

Go through your insurance and report the incident.

midwestspring · 28/02/2020 19:42

I understand that if he rear ended you it would be very unusual for it to be anything but his fault as he has a responsibility to maintain a safe stopping distance.

carlyclock · 28/02/2020 19:44

I will make a claim I just want to know how likely it is he'll get in trouble for it

He won't 'get into trouble' it's about 99% that he will be found 'at fault' thats all.

Mintlegs · 28/02/2020 20:18

If there is no damage and you report it your car insurance will go through the roof

carlyclock · 28/02/2020 21:12

No it won't. It may rise and it may not. Irrespective of any damage.

GingerGingerGingerGinger · 28/02/2020 21:14

You need to phone your insurance company. Also, it can take a while for whiplash to develop.

cabbageking · 28/02/2020 21:28

The insurance people's job is to determine fault even when some one denies it. Report it because you have minor visual damage but it still needs checking for non visual damage. Go back tomorrow and take some photos of the junction/ road markings at .

Oldraver · 28/02/2020 22:17

I wouldn't worry too much about him not accepting responsibility, it's standard advice from insurance companies

He rear ended you, he really won't have a leg to stand on

CakeAndGin · 28/02/2020 22:28

Even if you don’t claim on, you need to report it to your insurance company. It can void your insurance not to do so. If you choose not to claim, inform them and say you aren’t making a claim, it’s just for the records. They try to push your premiums up with it but you can usually argue it, in the same way they try to push your premiums up anyway. You will need to report these on any future quotes but you put the value down as zero. We’ve had 3 incidents in which we didn’t claim (either because there wasn’t any damage or because there was little difference between the excess and the cost of works) but you need to put them on for the simple fact that if he decides to claim on his insurance, your insurance will want to know why you didn’t notify them.

Kernowgal · 28/02/2020 22:44

I would wager that he is denying all responsibility because he is uninsured. You have his registration, definitely report it to your insurance company. It may be that your car is found to be fine after checks but it is his fault for not maintaining a safe stopping distance.

Check his insurance here: www.mib.org.uk/check-insurance-details/check-a-vehicle-not-at-the-roadside-after-an-accident/

idontlike789 · 28/02/2020 22:51

It's was 10mph and no damage to either car why would you report it ?

carlyclock · 28/02/2020 22:55

The car has not been assessed for damage

Whiplash lol at 10 mph no move on op .

Lol? Really?

Of course you can get whiplash at 10mph

TWD89 · 28/02/2020 23:04

I mean... he hit you. From behind.

How could that NOT be his fault? Confused

amaryl · 28/02/2020 23:06

If there’s no damage what are you claiming for? Confused

SciFiRules · 28/02/2020 23:11

That sort of impact won't cause structural damage. The days of rippled chassis and a shiny abs panel are a long way behind us... as are chassis in some respects!

purdypuma · 29/02/2020 07:29

Before contacting your insurance company take your car to a local car bodyshop. Explain what's happened & ask them to check your car for any damage. I got shunted at a roundabout years back, no visible damage but turned out to be 400.00 worth of damage not visible to the untrained eye. If there is any damage then contact your insurance & report. May be worth considering cost of minor repair eg new bumper clip as opposed to paying insurance excess & also if your car is of an age where your vehicle would be beyond economical repair (write off).
Unfortunately a lot of insurers raise premiums if you report an accident, even if non fault & very minor damage.
