Making Quarantine Fun

I think it's possible to have a light-hearted thread about covid19.

I was wondering.. how would you try to spend 2 weeks forced to stop at home? How would you prepare, what would you plan to do, or want to buy & have on hand (not prepping, just to pass the time):

I have a difficult jigsaw puzzle, a few thick books, and a quilt I meant to start making 5 years ago. There are a few movies/tv shows I never saw - but I'm not much of a tv person, tbh. Still, those things might fill my 2 weeks. What about you?

I know it's not in the spirit of this light-hearted thread, but as the mother of an 18yo DD who's had ME for 4 years and who has been largely housebound and isolated for that time through illness, it's in really poor taste to see 14 days' self-isolation as a jolly.

Perhaps those considering what it might be like could spare a thought for those whom it isn't a choice or fun, and lasts for significantly longer than 14 days. Such as the elderly, housebound and ill.

Youngatheart00 · 27/02/2020 21:41

I have every sympathy for those in that situation @BonnesVacances. It must be very isolating and frustrating.

However, for those experiencing a busy pace of life (acknowledging this in itself if a privilege) to step off the merry-go-round for a couple of weeks does appeal. Especially given most holiday / weekend time is spent being busy with ‘activities’ or we often feel guilty.

Well we've got about 2 weeks before the day the landlord's coming to do an inspection of the house. So 2 weeks quarantine to scrub random scuff marks off the walls and the paintwork, remove doghairs from the carpets, and spruce up the garden, and generally pretending that we're actually civilised people who normally have all parts of the house tidy at the same time, yep, 2 weeks would be about right there.

ememem84 · 27/02/2020 21:44

I joked with dh the other day that I might get myself quarantined. Just to get a break from ds age 2 and Dd 6m. Netflix. Hot tea. Books. Sleep. Bliss. Obviously only if I didn’t get the virus.

Toomanyapplesinthefruitbowl · 27/02/2020 21:46

We had a 2 week isolation over Christmas after DD had her tonsils and adenoids out. I loved it - the time of year helped though, lots of crafts and new toys! Helped that we weren’t worried about serious illness too I guess

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/02/2020 21:49

I would love it. Time off work, books to read, telly, Netflix, long lies, big bubble baths. I’d do a big wardrobe clearout, and plan outfits for spring/summer. We have a cat, so no worries about walking her.

Butterfly02 · 27/02/2020 21:49

I wonder if we'd have a baby boom 9 months after a lock down?
As someone whom is disabled and rarely gets out it wouldn't be much different for me however having dc at home all day would be great.

whatnow40 · 27/02/2020 21:49

I'd write the raunchy book I've been promising, and self publish on Amazon for a handful of people to enjoy.

DesLynamsMoustache · 27/02/2020 21:49

I'm not sure I'd mind it, but I am a homebody generally! Dog is out of commission for walks at the moment due to an injury anyway, and DD is generally easygoing enough and we have enough toys and games and things that she would be fine as long as she had snacks! Also if DH was quarantined too that's an extra pair of hands during the day so I'd have more time to watch box sets Grin It would only be enjoyable if I wasn't actually feeling unwell though! And if we had plenty of food.

lljkk · 27/02/2020 21:51

The idea of being sequestered here with my teens makes me break out in a sweat. More because they don't tolerate each other well.

Can we get delivery pizza?
Do the cats have to be quarantined in with us?

If we went like China and could only allow one person out every 3 days to get food -- would there be fisticuffs in your household about who had the right to go out?

mamaduckbone · 27/02/2020 21:52

Write a novel, obviously.
Or binge watch Netflix, eat chocolate and read paperbacks

Arseit · 27/02/2020 21:53

I’d crack on with all of Line of Duty.
Haven’t seen any of it. I think that would keep me occupied for a while.

Chilver · 27/02/2020 21:55

Unfortunately I'd still have to work, just from home, and I'd get increasingly narky at my DH and DC who would be doing all the lovely things you're suggesting!!

meow1989 · 27/02/2020 21:59

Ds is 20 months, it would be a looooooooong 2 weeks!

Think we would do lots of cbeebies, drawing, read books, do some baking or play dough, have a couple of baths, do some dancing, play with the train set... that might get us through the first morning if we're lucky Grin

GnomeDePlume · 27/02/2020 22:00

Not sure delivered pizza would be a good idea. Perhaps ask them to post slices through the letterbox?

Apparently you are allowed deliveries but they have to be left rather than handed over. In my area you would need the sprinting ability of Usain Bolt to get to a delivery before the local n'er-do-wells got to it.

Fanciedachange1 · 27/02/2020 22:04

Lljjk no! Hubby would go out as a. He can drive, b. I would be content in my duvet on pillow mountain!

I would aim to tidy and de clutter followed by a good clean. Maybe get dh to paint a few rooms. Do a bit of study and exercise and plenty of netflix!

My dog would be ok, so long as we didn’t run out of dental stix!

Geometricprince · 27/02/2020 22:05

I would also still have to work as I can work from home. I might be tempted to throw my first ever sickie tho, it's not like anyone would question it under the circumstances Wink

Wallywobbles · 27/02/2020 22:08

I live in the middle of nowhere so dog would still get walked and I'd fill my days riding, walking and doing the sheep etc. Cooking as normal. Maybe even getting to the bottom of one of the 4 freezers.

Preparing the rest of my teaching for this semester for uni.

DH would be in ecstasy-he is the DIY king.

It would go In a flash.

Mintjulia · 27/02/2020 22:11

I’d have to be quarantined with ds (11). I could spend two weeks learning MineCraft, Then I wouldn’t have to pretend to understand what he’s talking about. Grin

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 27/02/2020 22:18

I would run up and down my front room a gazillion times, to see if I could go over 50km!

Knocksomesense · 27/02/2020 22:27

I hope I could be quarantined alone. Dh can look after my two preschoolers. I would sleep lots and lots, drink HOT tea and read. Bliss

Nitpickpicnic · 27/02/2020 22:27

A lot of watercolour painting would be happening here.

And a lot of piano/singing practice for my DD.

DH had better hole up somewhere else, though. Or we’d emerge to a murder trial (not so much a baby boom).

Nitpickpicnic · 27/02/2020 22:30

Oooo and I’ve just bought a fab under-desk cycle thingo, that you can also prop on the desk for upper arm exercise.

I’d emerge from quarantine svelte and fit!

JigsawsAreInPieces · 27/02/2020 22:37

We could probably finish off assembling our new kitchen and utility cupboards... Grin

in the garage since march

Mammyloveswine · 27/02/2020 22:41

Oh god I would love it...but only without the hubby and kids!

I'd watch loads of Netflix... piss about on Mumsnet.. drink wine.. sleep.. listen to music..

I've been working so hard lately I honestly fantasise about a two week quarantine!
