Please give me some recommendations- I’m spoilt for choice at the shops Confused

Have been using Aldi tablets but they don’t make much foam in the machine - can anyone recommend something really good?

Powder only (usually Daz). Straight in the drum. Use half the recommended amount and the same amount of washing soda crystals (Dri-Pak).

For delicates I use Woolite - again, straight in the drum.

I never use fabric softener.

I use Lidl bio powder for whites, bedding, towels, etc, and Persil colour liquid for everything else. Also Lenor Ruby Jasmine which smells divine.

I use a non bio gel from Poundland for everything. The current one is 'tropical' scent apparently. Fill the cap, bing in the drum, job done. It gets clothes clean, doesn't leave an overpowering scent and it's a £1 for 30 odd washes. Winner!

Bio makes me itch so I avoid it.

How come so many people put the powder in the drum instead of in the drawer? Is there a benefit to doing that?

Very helpful responses but with doing towels etc separately it’ll take me ages to process after sorting (a) by colour / white and (b) by type of item (towel or sheet vs t shirt for example..) and washing each pile with appropriate product!

the benefit is that the drawer doesn't get manky. and in low water pressure areas (or high rise buildings) the water pressure is not enough to dissolve all powder.

Ariel powder for whites, towels and bedding. Ariel colour tabs with a colour catcher for coloureds. Oh and a Calvin tablet for every wash- very hard water area here and it’s wreck several machines in the past.

TellySavalashairbrush · 26/02/2020 17:46

Calvin= Calgon

if you must use liquid (I have to due to a septic tank, it isn't brilliant for the machine but that is less essential than the tank) then either Sainsburys Bio or Surf in the biggest cheapest bottle you can find. Aldi don't often get it wrong but their washing liquid really stinks.

not capsules, horribly wasteful even when sold as eco-friendly.

BinkySodPlop · 26/02/2020 19:39

I also use white vinegar as fabric conditioner. Can use it with all fabrics / temps / detergent, which is handy as I mix'n'match most things.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/02/2020 00:05

Since my earlier post I have had a washing disaster, bleachy stains on black trousers where the powder didn't rinse away properly, they're ruined!

FFS, really wanted to cut back on plastic packaging by not using a liquid buy don't want to risk that again.

WaxOnFeckOff · 28/02/2020 12:24

We can only use Surcare powder (non bio) due to DHs allergies. I do virtually everything on half load short washes so it's easy to separate into different types of load. There is no perfume with the powder and we can't use fabric softener either but it's fine. If something has a stain then doing a bit of a rub with vanish bar before washing usually does the trick.

Gilead · 28/02/2020 14:39

Non bio smol, really good.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 28/02/2020 14:44

I use sainsburys non bio or persil on everything. Comfort pure fabric conditioner. Any bio powder brings me out in hives.

I did use the pod things years ago and my machine started smelling funky. Repair man said the gel pods are no good for machines unless you are doing 60+ degree wash everytime. They solidify in the pipes and start stinking.

twilightcafe · 28/02/2020 14:50

Non bio powder (Fairy, or Ecover if it's on offer) for coloureds.
Non-bio plus a slug of Biotex and/or laundry bleach for whites (depends on dirt level)
Ecover delicate wash for bras/woollens

stoplickingthetelly · 28/02/2020 17:38

I use the old-fashioned Ariel powder in the green box. It’s fine on colours etc and it’s great for getting out stains - 2 very mucky dc here.

stoplickingthetelly · 28/02/2020 17:39

The Ariel is a bio powder.

ByeMF · 28/02/2020 18:41

I use whichever Lidl or Aldi powder is GH approved. I only ever use half the recommended amount. A box lasts bloomin' ages. I do have to pre soak really mucky white socks though.
