Anyone giving anything up for lent? I still haven’t 100% decided so better decide quick!

I'm not religious so won't be giving anything up. I suppose there must be some deeply religious Christians who still give something up for lent though. Is it supposed to be eggs? I never did understand it.

You could do something extra instead of giving something up. We encourage this in our school.

TheFaerieQueene · 25/02/2020 21:54

Nothing. In fact I might take up something very outrageous for the next 40 days instead. 🤣

I'm an atheist but will give up things for Lent.

Just had my last glass of Prosecco as giving up alcohol. However, I am finishing up 6 days early as it's my 40th and I'm taking one night off at the end of March for a night out with colleagues. So obviously not very strict!

Other people I know are giving up bread & chocolate, crisps and cigarettes. Another is committing to run 5K every week.

I’m not particularly religious but I do like to look good for summer so I’m giving up chocolate 😂

Alcohol Following on from dry January
Although Sundays don't count in Lent so will see...

Serenschintte · 25/02/2020 22:14

Catholic here - Facebook and Instagram are off the menu until Easter.
Going to try and say the Rosary every day. I often don’t do as well and I hope too. So let’s see how well it does this time.

Sugar. Well in chocolate, sweets etc. Not in fruit and booze.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 25/02/2020 22:24

RC here - I do the usual: clean up my life and cut out luxury foods (sweets, alcohol etc.) and cut down on food generally, following the recommendations I was brought up with - small breakfast and one plain meal a day.

BoudoirPink · 25/02/2020 22:25

I gave up being a Catholic for Lent many years ago, and decided not to take it up again after Easter.

@CherryPlum, it is to emulate Jesus who spent 40 days fasting and praying in the desert, and to prepare via self-denial and prayer for Easter, the most important Christian festival. Sort of less-hardcore Christian Ramadan. Shrove Tuesday, aka Pancake Tuesday, is because medieval Christians who fasted very severely, were forbidden meat, eggs and dairy in Lent, so used up eggs and dairy making pancakes the day before the Lent fast starts.

By the time I was growing up in a devoutly Catholic society in the 70s and 80s, it was more a matter of giving up sweets and daily Mass.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 25/02/2020 22:26

Booze and chocolate (2bf I'm pregnant but not public yet, but I give up booze every year for lent - between this and Dry Jan I've only had to wing excuses for a rare event in Feb!)

Theorangeorange · 25/02/2020 22:27

Chocolate 🍫

SushiGo · 25/02/2020 22:27

Nothing, I was thinking about doing a collection instead as our food bank has been asking for donations.

AgeLikeWine · 25/02/2020 22:28

Religion.

I first gave up religion for lent when I was 15, and have continued to do so ever since.

PenelopeFlintstone · 25/02/2020 22:30

I suppose there must be some deeply religious Christians who still give something up for lent though.
Lots of people give up something for Lent. It’s a cultural tradition like Christmas and Easter, so not just for the ‘deeply religious’. I should do it; I might lose weight.

Alcohol and chocolate. First year in ages I’ve given something up properly.

Bakedpotatoandgin · 25/02/2020 23:06

Chocolate, alcohol and mumsnet. If you see me on here before Easter tell me to get out!
I will also try to do more Bible study, probably working through Mark's gospel with a guide.
