Best Mother's Day activities/gifts?

SorchaMumsnet · 25/02/2020 17:25

Hi all

We're writing a page rounding up ideas of what to do on Mother's Day (Sunday 22 March 2020) and thought you might be best placed to ask :) What's been your favourite Mother's Day activity, outing or gift you've received (or given) - and why?

Thanks!

I’m just happy if they come for a visit (grown up dds and Gdcs, they don’t live around the corner.). I am even happy to cook. Eating out on Mother’s’ Day is often overpriced and everywhere is very busy.
A card and some flowers are always welcome, but I never want anyone spending a lot of money on anything - I’d much rather they didn’t.

Brat gift ever- Women of Nasa Lego. I didn’t know it existed, but just shows that DH and the DC “get” me after all.

On Mother’s Day, I get to choose what we do. I usually choose mountain biking. Last year we did a route on the N York Moors with an amazing farmhouse cafe halfway round, in a hamlet called Paradise.

I’m in my 60’s, and my grown up DDs gave me the best ever present last year. A voucher for an hour’s tuition with a racing driver, before being let loose in a souped up car for a rally cross! They’d signed the card “Now you can do it legally, you speed demon!”
Not all mothers want spa days or girlie stuff. If you choose something individual, with thought for their own specific hobbies or interests, it will definitely be appreciated!

Sitting in my house with the fire on being fed chocolates by the kids and drinking a glass of red whilst he cooks a roast and then washes up!

A bunch of daffodils makes my day TBH Daffodil

porple · 27/02/2020 12:34

breakfast in bed is the best gift

RedPandaFluff · 27/02/2020 18:37

Awww this is making me excited for Mothers Day! This will be my first, after many years of infertility. I'd love DH to do something special for me (DD is only ten weeks old) but I have a feeling there will be an expectation-vs-reality gap SadGrin

Hi totally new to this site, middle aged mum of teenagers! My question and advice wanted is, my friend who I don’t know really well has sadly suffered a stillbirth with her beautiful son, what can I send as I don’t live near, I even thought colouring books just to give her mind some silence for 5 minutes, any ideas? X

drownininplaymobil · 28/02/2020 12:28

I discovered I was going to become a mother on Mother's Day.

drownininplaymobil · 28/02/2020 12:29

And I got to tell my own mother that she was going to be a Grandma.

pinboard · 28/02/2020 15:14

@Tarnished74

That's a nice idea.
After my miscarriage, I was sent a huge beautiful basket of fruit. It reminded me to eat and take care of myself when I didn't really feel like it. I did a cross stitch to quieten my mind, but colouring books can be picked up and put down more easily. Mother's Day will be esp hard for your friend this year so your sending something may make such a difference to her day.

catanddogmake6 · 28/02/2020 15:24

@Tarnished74, I’ve not yet ordered from here but they always seem to have lovely thoughtful gifts and will also make up gift boxes and is often recommended on Mumsnet.

lovedogsandcake · 28/02/2020 16:19

This year we are planning to go ice skating and DH is cooking a tomahawk steak.

JulesJules · 28/02/2020 21:14

My favourite breakfast in bed - tomatoes on toast and coffee - hugs, home made card and maybe a bunch of daffs.

Largeyellowdaffodil · 28/02/2020 21:41

bunch of daffs from the mothering day service (optional service but daffs compulsory)
family walk
home cooked lunch

No need to go over the top.
No need to buy crap that is destroying the planet.

We need to get back to the simple things

ColdCottage · 29/02/2020 02:02

Sheepers slippers!

BoucleEponine · 29/02/2020 09:41

I don't want any of the tat advertisers bombard us with. Love a simple, inexpensive bunch of flowers anytime not just Mothers Day.

The commercialisation of it sickens me.

UntamedWisteria · 29/02/2020 12:34

Breakfast in bed and a bunch of tulips.

UntamedWisteria · 29/02/2020 12:35

when is Mother's Day anyway?

LidlDonkey · 29/02/2020 15:31

Planning on doing an escape room with my mum, dad and my DCs (21 and 17). I think she'll enjoy us all doing something together.

Then I'll cook lunch for us all with the DCs as sous chefs Grin

@caolan2020 it's etiquette to start your own thread in a relevant topic (there's a whole Pregnancy topic) to ask your own questions not related to the OP.

TerfTerf · 29/02/2020 18:49

I'm taking my mum to this surrogacy conference on Sunday in London and to the Comedy Store the night before. Also bought her a Portmerion plate with her favourite flower on it (a second, from TKMax, so she can use it often and not worry about breaking it!)
My children will probably go and see MIL since DH is away (working).

JaceLancs · 29/02/2020 19:17

DC (adults) cooking me a meal - making me more than a few cocktails and just generally making me feel special
When they were younger it started with breakfast in bed (tea and toast)

Ruths1 · 29/02/2020 20:00

@DrivingMsCrazy this was my first ever post and i had no clue how to do it. I then tried to delete my comment and was unable too. I did google for instructions and it told me to go to the bottom of any thread to add my own. I figured people would gather that considering it had nothing to with the original post. Sorry if this had caused you any upset.

Emm8s · 29/02/2020 21:17

It's my mums birthday soon and I've booked us both to do floatation therapy and massage followed by afternoon tea. We've never done float therapy before (she's never even heard of it!) so thought that might be something a bit different 😊
