Urgh, who eats sushi at their desk with their fingers and their gob open?
I am about to brain him with the chair! Angry

I have never understood why Onigiri haven't caught on here. (UK) Like Sushi but bigger and less fiddly/fussy. I used to make them for one of my Japanese obsessed kid's lunches when she was at primary. Easy to make (none of that rice vinegar and fanning it cool malarky) and very filling.

People who endelssly moan about other people's food, epecially fish are the pits.
...
What people do at home is their business but this is at their desk at work, Patroclus. Surely everyone who does that must be sure they are not eating anything smelly and are eating with good table manners, even at desk.

jackparlabane · 26/02/2020 07:13

All fish used for sushi in the UK is flash frozen to kill said parasitic worms. The FSA says therefore it's even safe for pregnant women.
Lost count of how many people told me 'are you sure you should be eating that?"then seemed disappointed they hadn't caught me out.

Being pedantic here

Sushi is rice.

Sushi isd warm rice spiced with, usually, mirin salt and sugar, sometimes sake.

Nigiri is also rice with fish. The rolls are maki.

ManyShades · 26/02/2020 07:57

I don't work at a desk any more. But when I did my favourite lunch was veg sushi and I ate it with my fingers. But didn't keep my mouth open while eating.

backinthebox · 26/02/2020 08:02

I love sushi. The use of the word gob in the op is vulgar and unnecessary. People irritate each other in different ways.

Chemenger · 26/02/2020 08:12

So many people complain about their colleagues’ food on here. I’d love to know what silent, odourless food is acceptable. A jam sandwich on crustless white bread, eaten by taking bites (using a knife and fork since eating finger food with fingers is wrong) and allowing them to dissolve in the mouth, then leaving the room to swallow in case the noise of swallowing is audible? Coffee is out, too smelly, personally I don’t like the smell of tea with milk, so that’s out, so everyone has to drink water (in tiny inaudible sips) probably with a bag over their head in case anyone who happens to be staring at them doesn’t want to catch a glimpse of their open mouth. Or maybe we could live and let live.

Geoffreythecat · 26/02/2020 10:49

Actually, sushi fingers all over keyboard is really unhygienic.

Eh? Is sushi especially dirty? People eat sandwiches and all sorts of other stuff at their desks.

At school we swabbed lots of household items (including a toilet) and coins grew the most bugs by far. Hopefully everyone scrubs their hands if they touch money and then their keyboards Wink

Bluerussian · 26/02/2020 12:13

Geoffrey I think people would wash hands after eating sushi so no sushi fingers over a keyboard.

Apparently sushi does not smell if it is fresh and presumably little packets of it such as you see in supermarkets wouldn't sell anything that was not fresh. I wouldn't know, never tasted, fancied it or worked with anyone who ate it for lunch. Surely the op's colleague doesn't eat the same thing every day at lunchtime and does nobody ever go out for lunch? However there is nothing antisocial about sushi except in this case the man eats with his mouth open which is disgusting.

Geoffreythecat · 26/02/2020 20:05

I agree, the bit in bold at the start of my post was someone else's quote. I can't see anything anti social about sushi either.

KatherineJaneway · 26/02/2020 21:26

Japanese people like me. No need to be so ridiculous about it. hmm

Amazingly, not everyone likes the same foods. Go figure. I hate the texture of raw fish, really gross. If you love it, fair enough. I can't imagine why anyone would like it but hey ho. Each to their own.

fastliving · 26/02/2020 21:29

Grinchemenger

I have to say I think sushi is one of the least offensive foods to eat in public.
Compare that to Macdonalds on the tube which should be a hanging offensive!

homemadecommunistrussia · 27/02/2020 07:33

He also eats baguettes with his gob open.Hmm

OP posts:
Ginfordinner · 27/02/2020 07:40

So, the problem isn't what he eats, it is how he eats.

lazylinguist · 27/02/2020 07:45

So what on earth has the fact that it's ('whoopsied' Confused) sushi got to do with anything? Yes, eating with your mouth open is impolite, but you sound weirdly judgemental about his choice of food.

Chemenger · 27/02/2020 07:51

If you know he eats with his mouth open can I respectfully suggest not looking? I’m sure he’s somewhere on dadsnet talking about his work colleague staring at him while he eats, no matter how much he tries to put her off.

ExpletiveDelighted · 27/02/2020 07:58

So it's not about the sushi, not about eating at his desk, just that he eats with his mouth open. In that case just look away. If he is talking to you just mumble something and get on with your work or own lunch.

backinthebox · 27/02/2020 22:40

It’s even more vulgar to keep repeating the word gob. 🙄
