Are you knowledgable about Big Band/Swing music?

I'm in love with "sing, sing, sing" by Benny Goodman. I feel it really captures the craziness of the era, a fun that borders on mania. It's creative and interesting. I don't know the genre though and I've looked for other peices of music like this but can't find anything similar. Would be very grateful for any suggestions.

I'm quite a fan of Glen Miller - but his music is really great for doing quickstep/jive to

Maybe try different Benny Goodman stuff - and I think Claire Teal has a show on a Sunday night on Radio 2

iklboo · 25/02/2020 17:07

Try looking for Swing Jazz to narrow it down. Some fab music.

dudsville · 25/02/2020 17:13

Thanks, i put the search into spotify but got lots more familiar songs, more traditional sounding songs words. Sing x3 doesn't have lyrics and the story it's all told through the music...

I'm not good with names/titles but you could try Humphrey Littleton.

Teaseall · 25/02/2020 20:10

Spelt Lyttelton, blooming spellcheck!

TeaMilkNoSugarThanks · 25/02/2020 20:21

Glenn Miller is the classic Big Band sound for me - or for slightly later stuff, try Nelson Riddle, who wrote arrangements for Frank Sinatra's gorgeous Songs for Swinging Lovers.

Clangus00 · 25/02/2020 20:25

I love Glenn Miller & Duke Ellington,

TheVanguardSix · 25/02/2020 20:35

Oh I LOVE Sing, Sing, Sing. It is pure metal! Grin
Such a great song!

Just a Gigolo by Louis Prima is awesome! I love it!

Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller is another great one... slow and romantic, but it really is evocative of that time.
Woodchopper's Ball by Woody Herman (my dad loved that song)

Try Artie Shaw
Count Basie
Duke Ellington
Glenn Miller
And of course, the lovely Ella Fitzgerald

dudsville · 25/02/2020 20:49

thevanguard, I'm guessing by your description that we'r might be in thre same wavelength with this tune so I'm off to Google your suggestions!

Sing Sing Sing is in the Malory Towers stage show, agree it's brilliant!

My Granddad was in a big band. One of my favourites that his band played is My Heart Jumped Over the Moon. Love Glenn Miller. Following for other suggestions Smile

dudsville · 25/02/2020 20:57

Ok, yes, those others are great tunes too, but i think you hit the nail on the head re "sing sing sing" being metal. To me it screams post 1st world war horror, stock market crash, change in status for the populous, prohibition, changes in women's status, clearly seeing government/power as corrupt (the basis for the crime novels of the era) 2nd world war looming... the tunes I've so far come across don't capture this madness for me. But i can read by what I'm saying that I'm pouring a lot into it that perhaps B Goodman didn't intend!

Lyttelton's nice!!

With Singx3 you have to listen to the whole 8.40 minutes to hear how it's not just a great pop tune.

@dudsville you'll make my 84 year old Dad really happy to hear that! He worships him

dudsville · 25/02/2020 21:17

teaseall, please tell your 84 year old father that he was born the year the best tune ever was created.

Try googling songs released in 1935, 1936 etc ... Boogie Woogie Stomp is a good ol'foot-tapper

Whatevah · 25/02/2020 21:34

When I was young, like a youngish teen, there was a perfectly fabulous programme on Sunday evenings on RTE radio 1, on big bands. An elderly Irish gentleman hosted it, and he played all the music from the big band era. Which I’ve always loved. It was my favourite time of the week.
I was just thinking recently that I’d love to listen to that show again.
Jazz is not for me! I don’t think they are alike at all.
The music of the big bands is just wonderful.

Horsemad · 25/02/2020 21:41

I love Swing and Big Band music. 🙂 Just makes me want to get up and dance.

KTD27 · 25/02/2020 21:50

Louis prima! He wrote it originally - with lyrics too I believe. So check out his other stuff. Benny Goodman just did the arrangement with his band. Blummin love it though. What a tune.

PhoneLock · 25/02/2020 21:53

It's not really my thing but my husband likes it. He listens to boogie woogie, swing and big band music when he is working and trying to shut out distractions. Glen Miller, Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey are some of the artists that I can see on the CD rack.

DianaT1969 · 25/02/2020 21:54

You might like this dance clip OP. Brendan Fraser dancing swing in Blast from the Past. I couldn't find a clip of just the dance, so fast forward 1 minute

DianaT1969 · 25/02/2020 21:59

A modern artist, but do you like some of Paolo Nutini's tracks?

Binterested · 25/02/2020 22:06

Also love Glen Miller - grew up on the Glen Miller Story which is great if you fancy a weepy.

Hallelujah by Glen Miller has some of the manic energy you are looking for and also the opening of Pennsylvania 65000 and In the Mood and I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo.

Binterested · 25/02/2020 22:13

Or what about Louis Jordan. Less brass but similar vibe. Five Guys Named Moe or Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens

ghislaine · 25/02/2020 22:15

Another Louis Prima great is I wan’na be like you.

You might also like Zoot Suit Riot by the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies.
