I'm in love with "sing, sing, sing" by Benny Goodman. I feel it really captures the craziness of the era, a fun that borders on mania. It's creative and interesting. I don't know the genre though and I've looked for other peices of music like this but can't find anything similar. Would be very grateful for any suggestions.

And Stevie Wonder’s tribute to all of this - Sir Duke - which references Basie, Miller, Satchmo and ‘Sir Duke’ Ellington

You might like some modern electroswing - try Caravan Palace & also the White Mink Black Cotton albums which have a mix of modern and old tracks.

It’s glorious music. You can see why it was so popular in WW2. Would put a smile on your face almost anywhere.

I'm not sure if Paul O'Grady still has a radio show, I know he did up to a couple of years ago...he played a few as he called them 'burlesque' tunes one afternoon. They were superb and definitely had the big band sound. Maybe you'd be able to enquire with him somehow? I got the impression these were some of his favourites. Good luck, it's so important to find music you enjoy.

Mr Pinstripe Suit by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and Zoot Suit Riot as mentioned above.

ChicCroissant · 25/02/2020 23:48

Jump, jive and wail is a good track as well.

dudsville · 26/02/2020 07:32

You might enjoy The Brian Setzer Orchestra too.

Sgtmajormummy · 26/02/2020 12:32

I’m currently obsessed with the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s La Paloma Azul but he’s more famous for Take the A-Train which I think you’d like.

Sgtmajormummy · 26/02/2020 12:36

I’ll just leave this here...

It’s blissful.
Sgtmajormummy · 26/02/2020 12:38

Sorry! The one above is Take Five in 5/4 time!
Tha A-Train (Duke Ellington) is a good one, too!

dudsville · 27/02/2020 16:41

electroswing (I'm listening now) is fabulous!!!

Electro swing is great! Saw Caravan Palace live last month - great show!

tobee · 27/02/2020 16:50

Like a bit of Caro Emerald too!

Sadik · 27/02/2020 17:56

Glad you're enjoying the electroswing dudsville. I love Electric Swing Circus too for real feel good fun music.

dudsville · 27/02/2020 18:06

How great is modern technology. I have spotify and love being able to access all kinds of stuff. I also listened to Louis Prima's sing sing sing, didn't find one with lyrics but the drumming in the track i found is better than the one i had. I've got them both now as they each have their merits.

It's the drum (and all the rest, but they pound that drum) in Sing, Sing, Sing. It makes every part of you want to move!
Just a Gigolo starts out all nice and mellow, but he just goes off on one in the latter part of the song. And again, that drum. Grin
It's all great stuff, isn't it?! Spotify is magic! Wouldn't be without it.

tobee · 27/02/2020 23:19

I like Big Noise from Winnetka by Bob Crosby and His Orchestra which is on the soundtrack of Woody Allen's film Manhattan Murder Mystery

tobee · 27/02/2020 23:19

And Bette Middler did a good version as well.

tobee · 27/02/2020 23:29

Also the soundtrack to Jeeves and Wooster, the tv show with Fry and Laurie has some surprisingly good tracks. And Anne Dudley wrote the theme!

tobee · 27/02/2020 23:42

Also recommend The Savoy Orpheans! Grin

Rowgtfc72 · 28/02/2020 22:06

Grew up on Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington etc. And I've met Humph, he was lovely.
Dad had Moonlight Serenade played at his cremation.
Could I ask a quick question? I'm going to see the Moonlight Seranade Orchestra hopefully in july. Firstly has anyone seen them and secondly will me and my 12 yr old dd look out of place in the audience? I dont know anyone else in their 40s that like big band.

Comefromaway · 28/02/2020 22:13

I love Sing Sing Sing.

There is a musical theatre show called Bandstand that sadly never made it across here. The songs are inspired by swing.

Emmapeeler1 · 28/02/2020 22:56

@Rowgtfc72 I went to a big band evening and had a great time. I was one of the youngest there but wasn't out of place! Everyone was just in a really good mood. The singer was about my age too.

ElGuardiandenoche · 28/02/2020 23:41

There is so many good suggestions here, everything I would want to mention. Also add into the mix Post Modern Jukebox, they can be hit or miss but they can produce some good stuff.
