Hello, I’m moving house soon. I’m just wondering if I should tip the removal people and if so how much.

Is be grateful for your experiences and opinions! Thanks Smile

I think we put aside £50 for them to share .. it's an expensive time so don't do it unless you think they deserve it . It's not mandatory .

Finfintytint · 25/02/2020 06:57

I’ve never tipped them.

CatyaPurella · 25/02/2020 06:58

I gave mine a fiver each when I moved in the summer. It was a Friday & they deserved a pint on me for sure!

I did. I gave them a tenner each. I don't know if its the done thing but they worked so hard. I know a lot of us work hard for no tip but my friend does clearances and he's already got musculoskeletal problems in his 30s.

Chottie · 25/02/2020 07:00

Yes, gave them a tip, plus regular tea / coffee / fruit buns / sandwiches throughout the day. They worked so hard and really made sure everything went into the right room.

SinglePringle · 25/02/2020 07:10

Yes. Tipped around £20 per person I think plus teas, coffees etc through the day. Also provided lunch (sandwiches, crisps) but that was slightly tactical as it meant they stayed in the house and just cracked on as soon as they’d eaten. I also have them a couple of beers each to take away at the end of the very long, extremely hard working day.

ooooohbetty · 25/02/2020 07:14

No. We already had to have hundreds of pounds in cash on the day to pay them.

pelirocco123 · 25/02/2020 07:22

As a removal company owner ...It used to be very common for them to be tipped but apparently not as often now.It is a very hard job so please at least offer them drinks

Dilbertian · 25/02/2020 07:22

No, but provided hot and cold drinks, biscuits and snack bars. And when I saw that they were working straight through on the second day (not taking a lunch break as they had on the first day) I ordered in pizza for them.

Sicario · 25/02/2020 07:27

Yes. Kept them fed and lots of teas/coffees, then a tenner each at the end of the day to "have a pint". It's bloody hard work.

Rememberallball · 25/02/2020 07:37

No, and after being told we’d have 6 men to pack up on day 1 then load vans and drive down (London to Cornwall) on day 2, they sent 3 men on day 1 (2 of whom pissed off at lunchtime leaving 1 lad on his own till 3 pm when he left too - and only 1:2 the house packed up!!) Day 2 6 men turned up and we didn’t leave till 2 pm as they were still panting and loading the vans. We arrived at the new house at 6pm they turned up at 8:40pm, blocked the street with their vans and unloaded stuff pretty much anywhere they could put it. They did assemble the wardrobe and put the big furniture in the correct rooms but boxes were just anywhere. And they packed random things - 6 weeks after moving I unpacked one kitchen box and found 1/2 bottle of Cravendale milk wrapped in packing paper - thank his that didn’t explode!! I also found one of their staff nicked a London 2012 Olympics commemorative 50p coin from its commemoration pack - and left the pack in amongst the stuff from the drawer it had been in!! I’m also pretty certain they nicked a bag of £2 coins that was in my underwear drawer and they had been told to leave for me to pack (the whole drawer unit not just that drawer) yet I found random bits from it in a box!!

Afraid that removals firm didn’t get a tip - nor did they get the good reference/review they wanted from me (and kept sending me begging emails 6 months later!!)

Disfordarkchocolate · 25/02/2020 07:43

We did, about £50. We have used them 3 times now and they have been great each time. We offer drinks but they always bring their own lunch.

Sillyscrabblegames · 25/02/2020 07:46

Yes we did, 50 for the team and a crate of beer and bacon butties during the day. They were great.
On a previous move we didn't but they were horrible and grumpy and made us feel bad about our (admittedly poor) packaging skills.

ManyShades · 25/02/2020 07:58

No but my move was quite small, just one van which didn't take long to load.

jackparlabane · 25/02/2020 08:02

We tried but they refused to accept any money, even though they deserved an extra hundred quid between them. Did get them to accept a bunch of cans of drink, beer and cola.

Knewyou · 25/02/2020 08:04

I gave them £30 for three of them and got them sandwiches, crisps, drinks for lunch.

WTAFFF · 25/02/2020 08:20

Thanks so much!

IamMoana · 25/02/2020 08:22

No but I set up a table with biscuits, cakes, and regular cups of tea which they seemed pleased with, and took what was left with them.

DawsonJumping · 25/02/2020 08:28

Yes, £20 each plus a supply of cold drinks throughout the day and fish & chips for lunch. They worked so hard.

GloGirl · 25/02/2020 08:34

Depends how good the quote was. We had a good deal when we moved twice! So tipped around £50 each time plus bought lunch. (2 people)

If it was an expensive packing service with a large team eg Pickfords they are paid quite well and I might not be as inclined but maybe a fiver each for a large team to buy a drink.

Duchessofealing · 25/02/2020 08:38

We tipped £100, there were four of them from Pickfords and they went above and beyond to get some vintage furniture in to our loft room. They were great - it was a blazing hot day and they worked so hard to get us in.

MabelChiltern1 · 25/02/2020 08:47

Yes, even if you can only tip a small amount they will really appreciate it. I think most do a great job in stressful circumstances. I like Iam’s idea of setting up drinks/ snacks table... good luck with your move.

ginghamstarfish · 25/02/2020 09:15

I have moved many times and almost never tipped, they are usually a bunch of idiots who cause a lot of damage - Pickfords, Whites, local companies, all of them. Lost count of how many insurance claims I've had to do after moving.

vhs95 · 25/02/2020 09:37

We always tip, £10 to £20 per person depending on how obliging/courteous they were. The quote has nothing to do with the 'blokes' and everything to do with the boss.

MrsCasares · 26/02/2020 12:58

Have had about 21 house moves. Always tip. Last time provided tea/coffee, purchased a large subway platter for their lunch and gave each man £20 tip.

It’s a hard job. Couldn’t imagine doing it day in, day out.
