Pancake day/shrove Tuesday and lent

Yes it's ppppppp pancake day, one of my favourite days in the year.
We will have pancakes but as Christians we also give up something for lent. I've always done this and explain to my children who have the choice to give something up.
We also do a food bank collection to remember those less fortunate.
What things to other people do for lent? Do you get fed up of explaining why you won't eat the cake or chocolate at work?

Absolutely nothing. I’m not giving up anything for religion. The thought repulses me when you look at the history of religion

ShirazSavedMySanity · 25/02/2020 06:55

I follow 40 Acts as much as I can.
A bit of kindness never hurt anyone

topcat2014 · 25/02/2020 06:57

Chocolate, cakes, crisps, biscuits, sweets are all on my list.

Just using a convenient point in the calendar though

I try to do the 40 bags / items to charity.
It usually lasts a week.
Pancakes for supper tonight.

Hugglespuffed · 25/02/2020 07:56

Wow a bit of a mean first response given the op said they are religious.

I am not religious either but I went to church growing up. I sometimes give up something but usually not. I will probably have a pancake today though.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 25/02/2020 07:58

I was planning on giving up alcohol for Lent - although that was just for me not for religious reasons! Not sure I can do while in the midst of the coronavirus restrictions though!

Likethebattle · 25/02/2020 07:59

Nope as I believe most of the bible stories to be absolute nonsense. Sorry!

Arcadia · 25/02/2020 08:02

I am not religious but am hoping to lose a bit of weight by giving up chocolate, cake and crisps.

pourmeanotherglass · 25/02/2020 08:09

The last few years I've gone veggie for lent, but now my 2 DC are permanently veggie I don't eat a lot of meat regularly, so I'm going to try for sugar (except natural sugars like fruit) and alcohol.
DD1 is aiming to read a book a week during lent, and DD2 is considering keeping her room tidy ( now that would be quite an achievement!).
Definitely having pancakes tonight, though DD1 will be experimenting with a vegan attempt.

Timetogiveupnow · 25/02/2020 08:18

Can i add I understand people don't believe in organised religion, Im not a big fan. However the teaching of love your neighbour as yourself and don't be a dick is one I follow.

I try to follow 40acts. I take on more prayer a Bible study instead of giving things up. I'm already vegan, don't drink coffee, tea, fizzy juice or alcohol and am on a diet anyway. Not much left to give up.

AllPointsNorth · 25/02/2020 11:13

Give up a deadly sin. I plan on renouncing sloth this time.

SilverViking · 25/02/2020 11:17

Giving up sweets, chocolate, biscuits and cake.
Talking up walking and / or reading every day.

Lessstressedhemum · 25/02/2020 11:17

I'm Presbyterian, we don't believe in those. All sins are equally deadlyGrin

SilverViking · 25/02/2020 11:17

.. taking ...not talking

troppibambini · 25/02/2020 11:24

I'm going for the ashes with three younger kids at school tomorrow.
I'm giving up crisps for lent and everyone in the family
chooses something to give up.
The primary does fundraising Friday through lent so every year group has a different charity to raise for and different things go on every week to raise money.
Wednesdays everyone wears something purple to school to remember it is lent.
The primary kids get a secret Lenten buddy who they have to be kind to and on the last day of term it's revealed who their buddy was.
The secondary fundraises too, their are more visits to chapel and there is usually a retreat.

Were catholic (in case you hadn't guessedGrin)

longtompot · 25/02/2020 11:28

I'm not religious, but am giving up chocolate, crisps and biscuits for lent. I've been eating so much of all of it recently, so I think my waistline will thank me.
Looking forward to pancakes tonight though Smile

goldenorbspider · 25/02/2020 11:30

I'm not religious but we celebrate pancake day with vigour. We'll be having American pancakes, blueberries, syrup and bacon. Think I'll try and kick my chocolate and cake habit

Mossyrock · 25/02/2020 11:33

love your neighbour as yourself and don't be a dick

Grin

We had pancakes for breakfast today. DC usually manage a bit from the Love Life Live Lent booklet, which I like because it emphasises small acts of kindness and environmentalism. I fail to give up sugar every year but will try again.

BarbedBloom · 25/02/2020 12:20

I am pagan so no need to give anything up. We just eat pancakes because yum, pancakes.

LochJessMonster · 25/02/2020 12:25

I give up a different thing each year. This year its takeaways and fast food.
When people ask I say its for lent, which teaches self control, plus its good for my health and bank balance.

BlueChampagne · 25/02/2020 12:33

Doing "vegan till dinner time" this year for Lent and planet.

WiltedDaffs · 25/02/2020 12:44

I’m giving up chocolate and biscuits. I also plan to use the CofE LiveLent app plus get off my phone and read more.

Barbararara · 25/02/2020 12:59

I encourage the kids to give up something for lent, not for religious reasons, but because it’s good for them to experience that they can do it. It builds self discipline and makes them aware that they don’t have to be slaves to all their whims and cravings. I think that this is increasingly important in the modern world where they are constantly bombarded with consumerist messages, and dealing with the psychological effects of social media and mood changing devices in their pockets.

I’m giving up having my phone in the bedroom. It’s going to be hard. I’ve been trying to do this for a while, but I like my little dopamine hit in the morning to kick start my day, and the distraction in the night if I wake up feeling anxious.

It’s not a religious thing for me these days, as much as culture and tradition. A bit like making new year resolutions or doing Dry January/ Veganuary.

Barbararara · 25/02/2020 13:01

Does anyone else feel we got short changed with a lousy pancake day when other countries got Mardi Gras and Carneval?
