Pancake day/shrove Tuesday and lent

Yes it's ppppppp pancake day, one of my favourite days in the year.
We will have pancakes but as Christians we also give up something for lent. I've always done this and explain to my children who have the choice to give something up.
We also do a food bank collection to remember those less fortunate.
What things to other people do for lent? Do you get fed up of explaining why you won't eat the cake or chocolate at work?

love your neighbour as yourself and don't be a dick

Touché OP Wink

I’m not remotely religious either (brought up in a catholic household, called bullshit on my parents’ and priests’ guilt-tripping as a teenager), but I’m doing Lent in reverse I guess!! I find myself getting dehydrated, so I’m setting water reminders on my phone for 40 days, and hopefully that will be long enough for it to just become habit without the reminder Blush

For novelty, I am attempting a 'traditional' catholic fast this year.

In Ye Olden Days, before Catholics became, well, a bit soft, they would fast in a similar way to Muslims (but a bit more hardcore).

This 'traditional fasting' entails...

consuming just ONE meal a day, taken AFTER sunset, which does not contain 'flesh meat', eggs, milk or oil, (so no butter or cheese either), and no alcohol.

And no, I won't starve because Sundays are 'holy days' and don't count in the 40 days of Lenten fasting, so I will eat heartily then.

For added misery, on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, it's total fast, which involves no food at all, just water. And Holy Week involves 'black fast', which means I give up my daily meal for just bread, herbs, oil and water.

For the 'spiritual' part I shall be doing the spiritual exercises of St Ignatius, singing 'stabat mater' daily, in latin, and fingering my rosary.

niceclock don't forget Muslims aren't supposed to even drink during daylight hours in Ramadan - that's hardcore! Especially when Ramadan falls in the summer. Keep us posted though, and good luck.
