What's the best mattress to have? (really exciting!)

QuiQuaiQuod · 23/02/2020 20:41

I'm contemplating buying a Dormeo one, they have offers, but....

I'm a really restless sleeper, and I sleep in every position possible! I have to have 3 pillows because of breathing probs, which doesn't help my back or legs , I have disabilities too.

My current mattress is only 2 years old, its a spring one, and already feels like Ive had it 20 years! I need to lie down a lot because of my disabilities, and DC who is also disabled lies on my bed a lot, so I need one that stands the test of time.

Sprung or foam? Also, its said you should flip and turn mattress at times, yet a foam topped one you cant, no?

You can twist the foam topped ones- so toes to head. Just not flip them over.

Can you go try lying on some at a bed store? We would never have bought the one we did without lying on it.

We love our Emma one! Best purchase ever and I wake up with no aches!!

Cinderemma · 23/02/2020 20:51

We've got a simba mattress and I love it.

We have an Emma, I’m undecided but unfortunately well over the 100 day return. It’s hot, despite the stay cool layer spiel. If you move around a lot in bed it’s a bit like being stuck in wet sand. That said, it’s generally very comfortable although I can’t sleep on my front anymore as I find it’s too soft and my lower back hurts. If you go down the Emma route, they have substantial sales regularly, approx 45% off IIRC.

Shopaholic100 · 23/02/2020 20:55

We have just bought an i gel Pegasus mattress from Bensons for beds which I’d recommend if you like medium/firm. Try different ones in store, there is no best mattress as it’s so subjective, it really depends on what suits you.

We have a Simba and love it! After years of waking up with back ache I no longer do. It's even comfortable at 8 months pregnant so that's a huge tick 😂

theluckiest · 23/02/2020 21:12

We've just bought a Nectar foam one. I read a lot of reviews and heard that the Emma can make you feel too hot & the Simba can develop a ridge in the middle.

The Nectar is very comfortable and came with 2 free pillows. Man alive, they are pillows of the gods...so comfy.

Twinklestar222 · 23/02/2020 21:17

Disabled here too (although I personally prefer to call it restricted mobility) due to Ankylosing Spondylitis, costochondritis, bone spurs, tendonopathy & loads of other conditions.

Best mattress we have found is Tempur. Despite what we were advised we haven’t suffered with the heat despite it being memory foam and I even have an electric blanket on to help my pain as well.

Remember that you may be able to claim the VAT back too!

QuiQuaiQuod · 23/02/2020 21:18

Ive done the 'lying on them in bed stores' but when you do that you're not really in your comfortable bed postion in your jammys and stuff, IYKWIM! so its difficault to gauige (sp).

I need one too that's cool, as I'm going through the menopause and the hot flushes, mild weather not helping!

I know I need one I can sink into but not like Astrid experiences!

medium to soft, I guess, a deep mattress. Its so difficult, and I cant afford a really expensive one, £200.-£300 is my limit.

Was thinking of a matress topper, a foam one, Dormeo have those too, but they cost the same a s a matress so might as well get the matress?

As for pillows- I bought a foam one and it felt rock hard! I need feather ones but then I have allergies! honeslty, if its not one thing its another! Smile

I did have a spring mattress which I had until it literally wore out.
Have replaced with a memory foam mattress ,best decision I ever made.

QuiQuaiQuod · 23/02/2020 21:19

Twinkle are they expensive though? Sounds like a good one.

I have a Simba, it's definitely the most comfortable mattress I've ever had.

QuiQuaiQuod · 23/02/2020 21:20

okay, seems the verdict is for memory foam. will look into it. Thanks all for advice.

No to dormeo. Bought a memory foam from them. Rock hard. Returned it via guarantee spent 5 months trying to get money back!

CyberPixie · 23/02/2020 21:25

Latex. Last far longer than anything else. I'm also disabled and went through mattresses every 2yrs until I got my full latex slab from latex sense. It's temperature neutral so you don't get hot, you don't get stuck in a hole like memory foam. I love it, had it 5yrs so far, no sagging.

Twinklestar222 · 23/02/2020 21:30

Think we ended up paying £1000 reduced from £4000 after we’d gone from John Lewis to a Tempur outlet store, including delivery and them removing the old one.

They did allow us the ‘send it back if unhappy’ scheme.

YogaLite · 23/02/2020 22:11

@CyberPixie, which comfort level did u go for your latex? I am considering changing my old latex and thinking firm. The old one is medium/soft but hardly soft.
Total pain u can't try them out in the shops :-( but for pocket springs I like firm best - I hope it's the same with latex. Love mine.

FlowerArranger · 23/02/2020 22:18

I don't think you can get a really good mattress on your current budget. False economy, as you'll only end up replacing it again in just a few years.

Given your disability and preference, I'd go for a fairly firm sprung mattress plus a separate, very thick (10+ cm) mattress topper - preferably goose down, which feels wonderful.

CyberPixie · 23/02/2020 22:20

@YogaLite I got the bellagio in soft. Its all talalay. Its very soft. I have a split king adjustable, the other side has the opulance, a Dunlop with talalay on top. Also in soft but it's more supportive than the bellagio.

I got vat off because of being disabled and they have a trial period, you can try 2 different ones, I think you have 30 days to try the first one and can then change it if not right.

YogaLite · 23/02/2020 22:25

Thank you @CyberPixie

Sarahlou63 · 23/02/2020 22:25

I bought a Jaclyn Smith (former Charlies Angel!) bed in 2003 - cost €5000 at the time but 17 years later still the most divinely comfortable bed ever.

ellendegeneres · 23/02/2020 23:06

Hokkasen from ikea. I’m disabled and it’s changed my sleep entirely. I’ve gone from an overly soft one, to a orthopaedic one which was far too hard for me. I got the firm hokkasen and i will honestly never buy another mattress. When this one gives up, I’m getting another. It makes me feel warm and cosy and supported and I’ve never slept so good in my life.

Can you tell I highly recommend it? Grin

Callmefordinner · 23/02/2020 23:12

Vi Sprung if you can afford it. 900 quid down from 3k

Best. Decision. Ever

YappityYapYap · 23/02/2020 23:16

I had a memory foam mattress and it was rubbish and cost £850. I now have a silent night sprung mattress and it's excellent. 2 years I've had it with no issues and I get the best nights sleep. It cost £320 from argos

QuiQuaiQuod · 24/02/2020 20:09

ellen But Ikea have different sizes to UK ones, no? I need a small double mattress.
