Please help me choose a car!

I'm hopefully getting rid of my Hyundai i20 later this year and I've started thinking about what I want instead. I haven't driven anything yet so I'm purely going on looks and I've got the short list down to these:

Renault Clio RS Line
Kia Picanto GT Line S
Nissan Micra Tekna
Ford Fiesta Titanium X

Has anyone got one of these (not necessarily the same spec) and what do you think of it? I don't have children so no need to worry about car seats, buggies etc and DH has his own car but we tend to alternate when we go out or on holiday. I want something that looks good, is fairly cheap to run and has a reasonable warranty. Oh and it can't be electric or plug in hybrid.

Thanks in advance.

I have a '19 Kia Picanto 1 and I absolutely love it. It looks cute, easy to park, drives nicely and I got £2000 off the price by scrapping my very old car. I would have liked a higher spec but couldn't justify the price difference as I do very few miles.

TheChippendenSpook · 23/02/2020 19:34

I had a little Picanto and I loved it. It wasn't great on hills though but it did chug its little way up them 😊 I only got rid of it as we swapped two cars for one and got a Sportage for the boot space.

Why not electric or hybrid? I was considering a hybrid (Toyota Corolla, ex demo with less than 5,000 miles are about £20k) when a friend gave me a lecture and said what possible reason could I have to not go fully electric? How many journeys does one do over 200 miles that one couldn't stop to charge?
You may have perfectly legit reasons but please consider it.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/02/2020 19:56

It's good to hear the positive reviews of the Kia as I think it's my favourite.

Regarding electric, the main factors are cost and that I've got nowhere to charge it. I'm not paying £25k+ for an electric car when I can get a Picanto for £15k or less, I can't do it. I don't have off road parking so I wouldn't be able to charge it overnight so it wouldn't be practical for me.

A plug in hybrid would be the same problem, and I don't like the look of the Corolla, Kona or non plug in hybrids.

I love the website Honest John for car info.

latheritup · 23/02/2020 20:03

I own a Micra N-Sport and love it.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/02/2020 20:06

Tell me more latheritup, that's the other model of Micra I was looking at! What's the ride like, I was worried it might be too harsh on the low profile tyres but I do like it.

Kia NIRO self charging hybrid? You can get a decent 2nd hand one for what you've said money wise.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/02/2020 20:13

To be honest I don't like the look of the Niro.

I've got the Fiesta. Absolutely love it. Comfortable, smooth, high spec, and soooo reliable. Mine was left outside for 3 months recently (so all through winter) without being driven. It started first time. A friend has had a lot of trouble with a Clio, they come much lower down in reliability tables. It'll always be a Fiesta for me.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 23/02/2020 20:20

I learnt to drive in a Ford fiesta titanium. Great little car, I would have bought one if I could afford it.

ginghambox · 23/02/2020 20:22

Out of those, the Clio.

AnotherEmma · 23/02/2020 20:23

Ah well looks are everything 🙄

I would get a nearly new car, because it's better value and better for the environment than buying brand new.

First choice would be a self-charging hybrid and if I couldn't find one of those that met other criteria, I would get an efficient petrol car.

I'm a fan of Skoda as I think they are good value; great quality for the price. However for the size of car you want I guess you'd be looking at the Fabia and even I concede they're not very pretty Grin

What about a Golf? Don't know if there are any self-charging Golfs or if they're all plug-ins.

AnotherEmma · 23/02/2020 20:23

Having said all that, my mum's had fiestas for years and always been happy with them.

BettaSplenden · 23/02/2020 20:27

I have a Micra N connecta and I chose it because I didn't like the push button start that the tekna comes with. Gadgets wise it's fantastic. I sometimes feel the engine is lacking a little but the turbo helps. 3 iso fix points is also a winner for me. Boot is fairly good. Dead easy to park and actually quite fun to drive once you get used to it (I swapped from a 1.5l diesel so it was a no change)

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/02/2020 20:28

Why the eye roll AnotherEmma? I want a nice looking car, electric is a definite no and I'm not keen on any of the hybrids. This was a thread to ask advice about certain cars, not about the environment.

I'm open to a nearly new car but they don't always work out cheaper as the interest is usually higher than brand new. I'll definitely be looking though.

BettaSplenden · 23/02/2020 20:28

Pushed post too quick. I had a fiesta zetec and I loved it but it was lease and when I decided to buy a car I opted for the Micra due to the bang for the buck x

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/02/2020 20:29

AnotherEmma, I actually do quite like the Fabia, although to get the spec I want it's bloody expensive, the same as VW. For some reason I don't actually like VWs though.

I've had a Fiesta Titanium X and it was AMAZING! the EcoBoost engine is out of this world. Also Ford has, without a doubt, the very best in car system than any other.

I wouldn't touch Renault personally.

Ford is by far the best choice. I miss my Fiesta

HavenDilemma · 23/02/2020 20:40

Titanium X includes keyless entry & start and my gawd that is such a luxury!

Geoffreythecat · 23/02/2020 20:47

I'm with you Haven, on my third Fiesta.

AnotherEmma · 23/02/2020 20:52

"I'm open to a nearly new car but they don't always work out cheaper as the interest is usually higher than brand new."

Credit card, personal loan?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/02/2020 21:06

I looked at a personal loan but the interest was too high and I don't have a big enough credit limit to by a £12-£15K car on a credit card although I'm currently thinking how many air miles I'd get for it!

I've had Fiestas in the past and liked them but I fancy something different this time but couldn't quite bring myself to rule them out completely. And they are so expensive compared to Nissan!

Not a Renault!!!
