Chicken smells rank - can I still cook it?

MozzchopsThirty · 23/02/2020 16:13

It's dated tomorrow
Been in the fridge since I bought it
But it stinks
And I can't face going to the co-op to buy an overpriced one

Will it be ok??? If I nuke it for 2 hours?

Ugh no sorry OP I wouldn't risk it. It's turned- order pizza maybe?

SayNoToCarrots · 23/02/2020 16:14

😂 no.

Sewingbea · 23/02/2020 16:15

Nooooo! Please don't.

MoaningMinniee · 23/02/2020 16:15

No, you don't need food poisoning. Wrap it very thoroughly and take it back to the shop you bought it from with receipt and complain bitterly. You should get a refund, quite possibly a double one. And go to co-op now and buy replacement.

FakeFraudSquad · 23/02/2020 16:16

Of course not.

Why would you want to cook and eat something that “smells rank”? Confused

DippyAvocado · 23/02/2020 16:16

I am normally pretty blasé about food in the fridge but definitely not if it smells noticeably bad. It's one of the key signs it's off.

PotteringAlong · 23/02/2020 16:16

No. And I’m the most devil may care person you will meet to food dates. But if it stinks it’s off. Bin and don’t go near it.

MoaningMinniee · 23/02/2020 16:17

Even without receipt, the packaging and date will show that it came from the original shop.

TheQueef · 23/02/2020 16:17

No. No. No.
No.
Throw it in the outside bin, tis gone.

Baaaahhhhh · 23/02/2020 16:17

Trust your nose rather than the dates..... don't eat it !

Lordfrontpaw · 23/02/2020 16:17

If it smells, then it’s probably gone off! Don’t risk it.

I’ve had a spate of fruit and veg (don’t eat meat) going off before sell by dates recently. I wonder why?

DramaAlpaca · 23/02/2020 16:19

No, if it smells rank please do not eat it. You could make yourself very sick.

jazzandh · 23/02/2020 16:20

I have had the odd issue like this in the past and though it was maybe packaging causing the smell, so cautiously cooked the life out of it, but they still smell afterwards and you still end up binning them having wasted energy cooking!

fussychica · 23/02/2020 16:20

Good God no! I never worry too much about sell buy dates but if something smells rank it's off regardless.

Begsy · 23/02/2020 16:21

No way, always trust your nose first!!!!

bloodywhitecat · 23/02/2020 16:22

Why would nuking it for two, or two hundred, hours suddenly make it OK to eat? If it smells rank it is gone, a late, great chicken. Get rid.

LimpidPools · 23/02/2020 16:23

No, no, no. This is the other side of using your brain about use by dates.
If the cheese or whatever looks fine and smells fine after its date, it's probably fine.

But if the high risk food smells rank before its date you still believe your nose, not the printing on the plastic packaging!!

Also, if you start to cook it, the smell will get worse and stink your whole house out.

Cook something else Wink

Do complain to the shop you bought it from though.

pinboard · 23/02/2020 16:24

Nooooo - esp not raw chicken with salmonella risks etc

I'd take it back for refund if not too much faff or go to Co-op and hope they have something in the reduced section (and its not whiffy when you open it) OR just fill up on extra veg etc.

Not worth potential food poisoning

MrsClatterbuck · 23/02/2020 16:28

Bin it or you could end up with food poisoning. At best with D & V for a couple of days or worst being hospitalised. Knew of a bride to be who got food poisoning on her hen do and was hospitalised. Had to cancel the honeymoon and couldn't even stand to make her vows.

peachypetite · 23/02/2020 16:30

Why on earth would you even contemplate this? If it smells rank it’s not safe to eat.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 23/02/2020 16:32

A) no you absolutely shouldn't eat it

B) cheap chicken will most likely have been treated appallingly, if you're going to eat chicken you should at least buy free range. Co op is hardly overpriced.

DoraChance · 23/02/2020 16:33

No way. I'm recovering from food poisoning today and can tell you the last 24 hours have been pretty awful.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 23/02/2020 16:33

Smell is one of the very best indicators of whether a food safe to eat or not. If your sense of smell is saying no, listen to it!

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 23/02/2020 16:36

I once cooked a lasagne with mince meat that smelled off, because it was in date and thought it was just me ( I was hungover).
I have never been so ill before or since- don't do it !!!
( unless you want to lose 7lb in 3 days like I did)

elephantoverthehill · 23/02/2020 16:39

This happened to a friend she took the chicken back, got a refund and then discovered her fridge was not working
