Chicken smells rank - can I still cook it?

It's dated tomorrow
Been in the fridge since I bought it
But it stinks
And I can't face going to the co-op to buy an overpriced one

Will it be ok??? If I nuke it for 2 hours?

Dates are one thing, your nose will tell you for sure every time! Wouldn’t risk it.

slipperywhensparticus · 23/02/2020 16:44

The co'OP ones are lovely though

PanicAtTheTesco · 23/02/2020 16:45

nooo, don't.
I always think that the flip side of being happy to eat things past their use by dates if they look and smell fine is being vigilant about the same signs of rancidity before the use by date. I had to bin a tray of chicken thighs 2 days before their date as they smelled evil. We had a chippy tea instead so the DC were thrilled.

MozzchopsThirty · 23/02/2020 16:46

I have binned the offending chicken!
God it smelled so bad 🤮🤮

I managed to get one from the co-op so am now starting again

I'm fuming, this is happening a lot lately
I think I'm going to stop buying chicken in Lidl

I've had this a lot in the past few months. From Aldi, Morrisons and Asda. Now I put chicken in the freezer straight away, not ideal but better than wasting food and money. No idea what is going on with chickens atm Confused

goingtotown · 23/02/2020 17:00

Take the label off the packaging & take it back to Lidl. I doubt you’re the only customer to complain.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/02/2020 17:00

I freeze everything the day I get it. I only keep out what I’m going to use that night.

woodencoffeetable · 23/02/2020 17:03

fresh chicken often smells 'farty'
it's one of the chemicals/gasses in the packaging that stops it going off quickly.

if the smell doesn't go away after a few minutes or package bulges then it's not safe to eat,
.

Titsywoo · 23/02/2020 17:04

How rank? There is a smell from most meat when you take off the packaging. Leave it open for 15 mins and if it still smells then chuck it.

Nearlyalmost50 · 23/02/2020 17:05

I have found the same, that chicken often doesn't last til it's use by date at all and can be whiffy a couple of days beforehand. Chicken sell-by dates is the one thing I really am careful with (unlike yoghurt which I would eat a week afterwards!) and I also do a sniff test.

Bouledeneige · 23/02/2020 17:07

I'm quite a one for ignoring sell by dates. They are indicative only. But i definitely go on the sight and smell tests. They are much better indicators. Please don't eat it.

FrogsFrogs · 23/02/2020 17:09

What wooden said.

Give it s couple of mins if it still smells bin it.

Trust eyes and nose over dates (including deciding to eat some things after they have gone past their date!).

dottiedodah · 23/02/2020 17:31

Not worth the risk ! Tell co op over phone (this happened to me at Tesco and they just accepted receipt!) Do not risk being ill .Have a jacket with cheese instead !

TitchyP · 23/02/2020 17:40

I've just chucked out the 4th pack of fresh chicken that smelt vile while still in date. All within the last couple of months when it's never happened to me much before in about 30 years of cooking.

MinesaPinot · 23/02/2020 17:54

I'm fairly relaxed about use by and sell by dates but I am very stringent about sight and smell with food, particularly meat and fish. I tend to buy mine from our local butcher who gets his meat from local suppliers.

Silvercatowner · 23/02/2020 18:46

Leaving aside the issue of food poisoning, it'll taste rank!

LuckyLickitung · 23/02/2020 18:58

I get this with Aldi sometimes. I wonder if chilled stock gets left out too long while staff hop on and off the tills...

MoaningMinniee · 23/02/2020 19:47

Ah... Lidl. The place where making a complaint is made extra difficult as you can't find anyone to talk to! I have managed to get refunds there but it was a right performance, and also it was on something from the centre aisles, not food. Since my nearest is over twelve miles away I only go about once a month to stash up on freezer type stuff. *Post written but not posted about two hours ago... life interfered... apologies for any x posts.

Nevertheless if you can face hooking it out and cutting off the label including the date, it will probably still be worth complaining at your next visit. The line I always take is that I think they should be aware in case there's a problem in the supply chain/processing

lljkk · 23/02/2020 19:49

I ignore use by dates but I won't eat something that smells rank.

longtompot · 23/02/2020 19:59

I had one I bought from Waitrose. I took it back and they exchanged it.

drivingtofrance · 23/02/2020 20:12

I will risk most foods if they're out of date or look a little iffy but not chicken.

I used to work on the rotisserie counter in a supermarket so handled a lot of chicken. Now and again there would be a pack which had turned. Its a very obvious smell.

If it smells it's off. No point taking the risk.

Ellie56 · 23/02/2020 20:23

Wasn't it Lidl that loads of people had problems with at Christmas with turkeys going off?

Take the wrapping back OP and get your money back.

MozzchopsThirty · 23/02/2020 20:32

I've binned it all now, even the wrapping was stinking
It's put me off buying meat from there

Where is a cheap but good place to buy my meat, fish & veg

Btw my co-op chicken was lovely, came in it's own tray so no scrubbing a roasting tub afterwards and the meat just fell off

Ellie

Yes Lidl's was one of the supermarket selling off Turkeys 🦃 😳😳

I wouldn't be getting my meat from Lidl op, especially of meat has been
funny before . I've heard Aldi is good for meat although to be honest, I don't shop there so not seen for myself. Also, Tesco's sell some cheap chickens, Asda too.

Footle · 23/02/2020 20:39

I got a refund for a rank Aldi chicken by phoning their head office. I was told to bin the chicken but save or photograph the label and take it into the shop with the receipt. I explained to the cashier and was refunded.
