What do you do if you don’t watch tv?

FestiveBake · 22/02/2020 20:48

Ideas please?

I’m bored rigid with most of the tv that’s on. I don’t seem to enjoy the stuff on Netflix that other people enjoy. I can’t think of any recommendations I’ve had that I’ve really liked.

I have been reading lots but other than reading, I’m at a bit of a loose end in the evening. No transport so can’t go out.

Hit me with your ideas of what I can do please! (Even if it’s new recs for tv)
Thank you!

I do enjoy television, but don't watch it most evenings, tending to have one night where I watch a film on Netflix and another when I catch up on whatever programmes I have series linked. I have two nights each week when I am out of the house until past 10pm. So on the three nights a week that I am at home and the television isn't on, these are some of the things I do when the kids are asleep:

Jigsaws
Cross stitch
Baking
Batch cooking
Eating
Early nights
Bath
Home facial
Home manicure / pedicure
Yoga
Household admin
Journaling
Correspondence
Ironing

I am also in the process of decluttering as kids have grown out of lots of clothes / toys / books but they're still in good condition, so I'm spending some time on listing and packaging, which is turning me a tidy profit. Much better than watching trash reality shows and soaps.

Getting out of the habit of turning the television on as soon are the kids are asleep has really made me see that what I thought was relaxing was adding to stress in the daytime, as lots of things I now do in the evening I used to cram into the day. It's really benefitted me.

I rarely watch TV. I have been in half term (I’m a teacher) and have tried several programmes but haven’t been gripped by any.
I read, play on FB and MN, bake, write (and attend a writing group twice a month), crochet (only large granny squares to make blankets), I go through phases of doing puzzle books (crosswords, sudoku etc), batch cook.
I do flit through TV programmes - am currently watching Masterchef New Zealand.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 22/02/2020 21:03

I haven't had a TV for about 20 years now. I have long since forgotten there is even such a thing as a TV.

I listen to Radio 3/Radio 4, read the newspaper, play the piano, do all the crappy boring domestic jobs, nag the teenagers, generally ghost around the house in case the teenagers need me, read, write, go for walks, do the gardening (not on February evenings, obviously), faff on the internet, reply to emails, ring friends, etc, etc, etc.

The teenagers do watch TV on their devices, though not much.

Seeingas- I see what you mean about doing stuff in the evening that you’d have previously done in the day but I do feel the need to relax rather than continue work. If everyone else is sitting relaxing then I want to do it too!

I don’t enjoy any reality tv or any of the usual things people watch on Netflix eg the stranger, GOT, etc - I just can’t get into them.

Puzzle books and jigsaws are a good idea.

Shosha1 · 22/02/2020 21:20

I only have the TV on for specific programmes. Hate back ground noise.

So usually I have a audible book on while i knit it crochet.
I play memory type games, as at 60 with Lupus and Fibromyalgia my memory is terrible so try and exercise it.
I was a Childminder for 40 years and often "chat" either by message , facetime or email with my past charges, many grown up with their own kids now

And talk with my DDIL most nights.
If DH is in we will often play scrabble or card games.

chocolateisavegetable · 22/02/2020 21:27

Sudoko / other number puzzles
Crosswords and other word puzzles.

May possible waste a lot of time on MN ...

FestiveBake · 22/02/2020 21:31

Really want to stop fannying about on social media!

Podcasts is a really good idea thank you. I think I’ll start playing games too.

I like very few TV shows but I do like films so I watch those sometimes. I also like drawing/doodling, currently learning how to do fancy lettering, and the Professor Layton DS games.

Cruddles · 22/02/2020 21:36

Video games? Make wine or beer? Bake?

Whynotnowbaby · 22/02/2020 21:37

Read, sleep - I like to have a really early night once a week if I can, I find my body seems to be much more able to cope with the rest of the week if I do, sew, crochet, learn a new language (we quite recently moved to a new country so this is quite important!), listen to radio 4 / podcasts, do online quizzes (jetpunk), Mumsnet/reddit/ Quora - I get annoyed with myself for this though as it wastes a lot of time.

Casino218 · 22/02/2020 21:39

Play casino offers /mb and turn over profit.

DwayneBenzie · 22/02/2020 21:40

Try yoga videos on YouTube.

Merename · 22/02/2020 21:40

We don’t have a tv and spend the evenings I have free with DH chatting together. I go out one eve to exercise, and often one night to meet a friend. He’s out one night and that night I usually potter on mumsnet and reply to messages.

I have to ask @FOTTFSOFTFOASM about raising your kids without a tv - we don’t plan on ever getting one, how is it? Did they ever complain? Mine are 4 and 1 just now and the 4yo will watch cartoons on laptop when we need to get things done but I’m keen for it to remain a small part of our lives if possible.

Todayissunny · 22/02/2020 21:44

I hardly ever watch TV.
We eat later than most people.
Tidy up and organise stuff and washing.
Do homework for course I'm doing.
Prepare lessons for work (im a language teacher) and look for materials.
Read.
Sew.
I always seem to have paperwork to do, replying to emails etc.
Go to bed early.

FestiveBake · 22/02/2020 21:51

Online quizzes 👍

@seeingasyouareclueless I love that attitude! I often think that once kids are in bed I need to sit and do f all but I can totally relate to trying to cram stuff in the day

ohnooutofdateham · 22/02/2020 21:55

You can get adult colouring books that are really relaxing.

FestiveBake · 22/02/2020 22:29

Loving jetpunk!

Adult colouring makes me edgy! I get antsy if I can’t get the colouring right!
