Possessions sliding onto the floor when braking

Any tips?

I've just a car with leather seats and everything on the passenger seat slides off into the footwell practically every time I brake. Tiresome!

I have a car organiser from Amazon filled with useful(!) stuff
So it holds wipes, tissues, bottle of water, protein bar, de icer, windscreen scraper, woolly hat, spare socks (no idea), chamois for windscreen, plasters and a foil blanket

ParkheadParadise · 22/02/2020 22:36

Happens to me too.
I get really pissed off when my packet of malters go sliding off the seat and end up rolling all over the car.

Canadianpancake · 22/02/2020 22:39

Can you change the position of the seat? I can raise mine slightly at the front and that was enough to stop slippy things sliding off.

Branster · 22/02/2020 22:44

What items are we talking about here apart from your handbag and coat and possibly work paper things?
If you had a passenger in the front seat then you wouldn’t be able to reach these items when driving and perhaps you don’t need to anyway. Therefore it makes sense to keep them in the footwell, back seat or boot of the car.
There’s usually a lot of storage in the console area for bits and bobs you think you might need to reach.
You’ll get used to the car soon enough and wonder why this was an issue then you can move them back on the seat.

Greggers2017 · 22/02/2020 22:44

@ParkheadParadise happened to me with my maccies fries yesterday 😱 karma that for going without the kids. I don't however have a car I can't handle, a dog ran out.

OP you sound like you're not fully in control, could you perhaps go to some quiet road to practice,

picklesdragonisawelshdragon · 22/02/2020 22:47

I put my bag in the footwell behind my seat. It's much better- easier to reach when I get out.

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/02/2020 22:55

This doesn’t happen where I live? Is it common where you live, FlamingoandJohn??

It’s not common but it’s common sense really. Imagine you are stopped at a traffic light anyone could open the passenger door and take your bag. I’ve not heard of it happening here but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t.

StCharlotte · 22/02/2020 22:58

A friend told me one of my cats ran out in front of her car when she was on her way back from the Chinese takeaway. Cat was fine. Car interior not so much.

StCharlotte · 22/02/2020 23:01

Imagine you are stopped at a traffic light anyone could open the passenger door and take your bag.

My car has anti "bandit" locks but I still put my bag (and my takeaways) on the floor behind the front seat.

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/02/2020 23:04

What are anti bandit locks?

Duck90 · 22/02/2020 23:10

Imagine you are stopped at a traffic light anyone could open the passenger door and take your bag.

But if it’s in the footwell they could still do the same thing?

safariboot · 22/02/2020 23:14

If nobody ever sits in the seat, adjusting it so the front is raised may help.

Or maybe a grip mat or even a seat cover.

If I have anything fragile in my passenger seat I simply belt it in. But doing that all the time with a bag is a faff.

Regarding theft, I just lock the doors when I'm driving! First thing I do once I, and any passengers, are in the car.

springydaff · 22/02/2020 23:15

My old car automatically locked all the doors apart from drivers side. Anti-bandit I assume. I had to press the 'unlock' twice to get all the doors to unlock.

OP posts:
springydaff · 22/02/2020 23:19

I worry about locking all the doors because if something happened, an accident, how would emergency services etc get in to save me/us?

It's the old quandary : locked in locks out.

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/02/2020 23:22

But if it’s in the footwell they could still do the same thing?

Well yes, but it’s not as obvious to the passing chancer.

ParkheadParadise · 22/02/2020 23:26

If you place your bag on the passenger seat, does the car not bleep continuously until you throw your bag in the footwell?

TrickyKid · 22/02/2020 23:28

Don't leave things on the seat!

Knittedfairies · 22/02/2020 23:30

I had my handbag taken from the front passenger seat as I pulled into a space at Morrison's. It was so quick!

Tombakersscarf · 22/02/2020 23:30

??

Tombakersscarf · 22/02/2020 23:31

Oh I think Parkhead means does it think there is a person there with no seatbelt.
Shouldn't unless you have a very heavy bag

ClientQueen · 22/02/2020 23:32

I lock my doors in town, unlocked if I'm on the motorway
Someone punched my car and caused £900 worth of damage but luckily he couldn't get in my door when he tried

Pixxie7 · 22/02/2020 23:46

Have you tried putting a towel on the seat?

ParkheadParadise · 23/02/2020 00:21

@Tombakersscarf
Yes, that's what happens when I leave my very heavy handbag on the passenger seat.

Tombakersscarf · 23/02/2020 00:31

Bowling balls? Grin

Before central locking/child locks, the advice was always to leave unlocked the driver's door and the left hand rear door (opposite). That way emergency services could get in both sides, but it prevented thieves opening the passenger door to take your handbag or the right drivers side rear door (if you put your handbag or briefcase behind you).
