Best non dairy milk for putting into strong tea?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/02/2020 15:40

I'm trying a month on vegan just to see how it is. I need to swap out semi skimmed milk which I have a small splash of in my Yorkshire tea.

What's the best alternative? I don't like anything too sweet but find tea without milk too bitter.

I d9nt put sugar in my tea.

Oat milk is my favourite. I also drink really strong tea and have tried pretty much all non dairy alternatives and found that to be the best

Oatly Barista

Rice milk is good for strong tea.

I drink quite strong tea and live Oatly (semi skimmed) in mine.

Oatly barista

mnahmnah · 22/02/2020 15:51

I’m the same as you - strong yorkshire tea!

I found oat milk too strong and sweet. Took over the taste. Only other I’ve tried is non-sweetened almond milk and I like that

Teddyreddy · 22/02/2020 15:54

The best I found was cashew milk - oat milk made it taste too porridgey for my taste, and I also found oatly barista too creamy.

raspberryk · 22/02/2020 15:56

Hemp milk is the only one I can stomach in tea.

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/02/2020 15:57

Oatly brand oat milk.
Other brands are too sweet.

Lindy2 · 22/02/2020 15:59

For me unsweetened soya works well in tea.

The nutty milks are good for coffee.

BellaBellaBelle · 22/02/2020 16:02

Another vote for Oat milk. I’ve had to eliminate dairy due to breastfeeding a reflux baby and I’ll never go back to cows milk now. To me Oat Milk is quite a subtle flavour but you can still adjust the creaminess by using semi/whole.

QueenOfThorns · 22/02/2020 16:03

I agree that Oatly is the best! Rice milk is too sweet (unless you have your tea with sugar, in which case you might like it).

Nooch · 22/02/2020 16:12

Oatly for me too.

MrsPMT · 22/02/2020 16:15

Oatly semi for me, I'm a real keen tea drinker and never thought I'd be able to switch away from dairy, but Oatly has definitely helped.

Don't mind what I have in coffee.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 22/02/2020 16:15

I like oat or coconut milk best in coffee, but hazelnut or almond is nicest in tea I think. I thought rice and hemp were both gross personally.

NoPinkPlease · 22/02/2020 16:18

The cheap "growers harvest" soya milk from Tesco is the best for strong tea

PippinStar · 22/02/2020 16:18

Oatly barista or soy (but definitely Oatly for me).

Blue5238 · 22/02/2020 16:20

Oatly. They do a semi, skimmed and whole version so swap for whichever one matches your normal cows milk

Palavah · 22/02/2020 16:22

Oatly. I don't think soya or almond milk work. And coconut milk has too strong a flavour.
Haven't tried hemp or rice or cashew, mind.

backinthebox · 22/02/2020 16:27

If you are ‘going vegan’ to save the planet please consider that soya, almond, cashew and rice milk have huge carbon and water footprints. Oat milk or no milk at all would be better if you are keen to move away from UK produced cows milk.

Palavah · 22/02/2020 16:54

Huge carbon and water footprints but not as big as cow's milk, are they?

mrsjackrussell · 22/02/2020 16:58

Rude health almond milk or alpro oat milk as that don't curdle. I normally buy the oat as I read that rain forest is being destroyed for almonds and the oat in alpro is grown in Europe.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/02/2020 17:02

Great, I'll try some of these.

I'm not doing it "to save the planet". Dh is putting himself on a new diet for a month so I thought seeing as I will only have myself to cook for then I may as well give this a shot.

Oat milk. DD2 has oat milk due to CMPA and when I run out of normal cows milk for my tea I will sometimes use hers and it's fine. I tried soya and almond before but found they curdled in tea and coffee.

jackparlabane · 22/02/2020 17:38

Oat milk is the only one I find bearable in hot drinks. Nut milks taste too much like ice-cream (both creaminess and too sweet).
