Recommend me your fluff

This can be books, audiobooks, Netflixy things.

Am feeling v down and blue atm and everywhere I turn there’s tragedy and sadness.

I can’t even listen to Radio 4’s Book at Bedtime as every time I tune in there’s a really depressing bit.

My heavy and overloaded mind needs fluffy distraction. Please recommend.

Following with interest as these books are EXACTLY what I'm into.

My recommendation is the Butterfly Cove series by Sarah Bennett - haven't read the last one but the first two really stuck with me for some reason and the characters are wonderful possibly not realistic.

FrostyBamboo · 21/02/2020 21:10

ClientQueen · 21/02/2020 21:11

Grace and Frank ie, Netflix.
Graham Norton

ThoroughlyForumed · 21/02/2020 21:15

Comedians books - honestly they are like nonsense brain goo. David Mitchell, Rochard Ayoade and Joe Lycett are my most recent and utterly distracting funny

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 21/02/2020 21:16

I would suggest watching a really silly film like “the man with two brains” with Steve Martin. I think it’s on Netflix at the mo it’s soooo silly but funny. I love daft 80’s films.
As for books I’d recommend anything by Jenny eclair - hilarious! Also I’m reading a few books by an author called Judy Astley atm - fluffy but not silly, there’s one called “just for the summer” which I really enjoyed. They’re mainly set in Cornwall. Also have you read any Elin hildebrand books? All her books are set on the island of Nantucket and they are really good stories. There’s a lot of humour in them, they’re not heavy but are very well written. I find them unputdownable!

ThoroughlyForumed · 21/02/2020 21:17

Theres also a really funny TV series from a few years ago called Crackanory where comedians/low level British celebs would read adult bedtime stories- great for the lols

AlexaC · 21/02/2020 21:22

Nailed It on Netflix. I love it and often watch it when feeling down.

I generally love people making things, whether badly or well so also would vote for:

Sugar Rush, Blown It (I think) or Zumbo's Just Desserts on Netflix. Great Pottery Thrown Down on 4.

I could also watch Bake Off on repeat too!!

Taddda · 21/02/2020 21:24

I'll second the Studio Ghibli films on Netflix, they've just bumped a load on there-
Also the comedian biogs, anything audio 'as read by Stephen Fry', including Harry Potter- he could read the dictionary and I'd find it de-stressing!

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 21/02/2020 21:24

The Durrells: sunny, animals, gentile poverty.
Episodes: funny, sunny LA stuff and Tamsin Greig, who is great in everything she's in.
All the Ghibli stuff that's on Netflix now.
In books; not necessarily fluff but soothing, the humans & how to stop time by Matt Haig, the summer book by Tove Jansen, maybe a re-read of your fav middle grade of YA stuff Harry potter, his dark materials, that type of stuff?
Watching with interest as sometimes reality is too much for me too!

ThoroughlyForumed · 21/02/2020 21:26

Yes Taddda - Stephen Fry's voice is like chocolate ganache for the ears. Hes got a new podcast series out at the mo called 7 sins and theres two out at the mo which are fab

Taddda · 21/02/2020 21:27

@Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket great minds Smile

JustForTheTasteOfIt · 21/02/2020 21:33

You've inspired me, I'm going to slip back into another Harry Potter audiobook phase tonight and I regret NOTHING!

Taddda · 21/02/2020 21:35

@ThoroughlyForumed 'Chocolate Ganache for the ears' is THE best way I ever heard his voice described! Thanks for the new podcast info- I think he's also releasing his Mythos stories with the symphony orchestra? Something along those lines, but I'd imagine brilliant (off to google...!)

lostinleaves · 21/02/2020 21:36

It's no use to you but I listen to my daughter's teachers YouTube videos because he has the most gorgeous, comforting voice.

ScarlettDarling · 21/02/2020 22:07

You need to watch 'Escape to the chateau '. It'll be available on On demand or something. It's gentle, soothing, happy viewing and I binged on all six series in about a week when I was poorly recently! Hope things improve for you soon.

ThoroughlyForumed · 21/02/2020 22:08

Atalune, oh my goodness My Dad Wrote A Porno is so funny! I really didnt like Alice Levigne on the radio but hearing her humour on that podcast, along with Jamie and James of course, is hilarious! I've got tickets to the live show in October

Haggisfish · 21/02/2020 22:10
