Is your house always guest ready?

I have been off work sick. Feeling miserable so watching a lot of tv.

I have noticed that in loads of shows, overnight guests turn up unexpected and there is always a guest room with clean bed linens. The house is also always tidy.

If someone arrived at my door now they would find a messy living room and a spare bedroom with no sheets on the bed and a half emptied suitcase on the floor. The bathroom would also need a scrub.

Am I a slob? Is everyone else house guest ready?

I have a weird house blindness, so when given lots of notice I overdo it, and freak myself (and DH and anyone else within 50 feet) out worrying it is not quite good enough.

In truth, we have a very nice guest room, guest ready almost always (not today though - DH washed the bedding and dumped in in a pile on the bed!) and the guest bathroom just needs a wipe around. Tons of towels and bedding, nothing to worry about and should be able to just enjoy. Rest of the house is cleaned weekly (DH) and usually tidy (me) except while meals are prepared.

@DDIJ your post made me sad, and worried for you. DO you want to talk to us about this?

CurlyMango · 21/02/2020 22:00

Actually yes. We get it all ready and have cover sheet and then close the door. Rest is generally all good to go as don’t like mess

Wannabegreenfingers · 21/02/2020 22:12

I dont have a guest bedroom, but my house is always open to vsitors. I like clean and tidy and there is always food in the house. I find it odd people who dont like having others over.....

Bluntness100 · 21/02/2020 22:18

Yes, it’s always clean and tidy and beds with clean linen on, i don’t like mess/clutter and it’s easier to stay on top of it and tidy as I go, rather than let mess accumulate.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 21/02/2020 22:20

My house is always clean and tidy but mainly because I have no kids and DP and I are out of the house for 12 hours every day. However we never have any food in, not even for us, so definitely nothing to feed a guest.

Cati1234 · 21/02/2020 22:21

Hhmm mine is sort of ready!!! My house is generally tidy I hate clutter... if they landed right now id day FUCK NO!!!! my lounge needs a vacuum.... the dog who is blowing his coat decided to have a good scratch behind his ear and a cloud of hair has just flown off him...
And I havent done my dinner dishes.... however my bathroom is usually always clean I spray it in bleach and rinse it after I've done my nightly routine.

I've always got pots of batch cooked food in the freezer and usually something sweet I've made in the last 48 hrs left over...
But my guest room now that's another story the bed would need to be steamed cleaned and flipped and made... it has got a plastic cover over the mattress and a sheet and then a memory foam dog bed on it.....yeah I know gross but at least the mattress is protected.... the duvet and pillows are in them vacuum bags in the wardrobe so they would need taking out too... i would need to put the suitcases in the attic....they've been in there since july 😯 and I havent dusted it in 2 days. The floor will need a mop too more than likely but its stuff I can do quite quickly I guess

VerbenaGirl · 21/02/2020 22:23

Oh my goodness, no!

MusicTeacherSussex · 21/02/2020 22:24

Yes. We love hosting and the guest futon is always clean and ready to unfold in the clean guest room which is also our office. I recently bought colour co ordinate furniture to give us a peaceful place to study and to sleep guests.
We lack in other areas but our friends are always treated like royalty. Because we enjoy it!!!!

Cati1234 · 21/02/2020 22:33

@IdblowJonSnow Love your name

@MusicTeacherSussex we will set up a rotating so we can all take turns to stay over of you like it that much 😁

KahlanRahl · 21/02/2020 22:46

No but 5-10 minutes is enough. I only have to make the bed and maybe run the dyson through it.

MusicTeacherSussex · 21/02/2020 22:55

@cati1234 bring a bottle and you're on Wink

jackparlabane · 21/02/2020 23:00

We always have a bed for guests, though sometimes that's a mattress in the lounge if people are in the spare room already. They'll probably have to make up the bed themselves but there will be clean bedding somewhere.
And if we're out of food or drink they want, we're a minute's walk from the supermarket or the 2am offie.

Guests who chip in and help tidy up or sort food or the kids can come any time. Ones who expect to be waited on don't seem to invite themselves.

StCharlotte · 21/02/2020 23:03

Pretty much. We might get unexpected visitors but any overnight guests are generally planned. The guest room is always clean and tidy but I don't make up the bed as soon as a guest leaves as DH quite often migrates into there if I'm snoring Blush or if he has an early start for work and I'm not going to change it every time he uses it. Anyway I used to own a B&B so am skilled at rapid bed changes Grin

The concept of the eternally ‘guest-ready’ house is so achingly twee it embarrasses me. It sounds like a socially-imposed 21st century version of two be-pinnied women hoiking their bosoms on their doorsteps and muttering about how ‘er at Number Ten hasn’t scrubbed ‘er doorstep, the slattern.

FairlyOddmother · 21/02/2020 23:43

Hahaha... Nope

BarbedBloom · 21/02/2020 23:46

Yes ours would be, we are both very tidy though and don't have children

LizB62A · 21/02/2020 23:48

Never.
I've got a friend staying in a couple of months and I've booked the two of us into a local hotel as they had a really good deal on - saves me spending literally days getting the house ready (and gives me a night where the blimming cats won't wake me up at 6am Smile)

AnneOfTeenFables · 21/02/2020 23:49

Our guests left yesterday so we're currently guest ready Grin I cleaned the guest ensuite today so all I'd need to do is change the bed. The clean sheets, etc are in the drawer.
Kitchen still has the dinner dishes on the table ... but apart from that everything else is tidy and clean.
On a bad day, I'd need about 1 hour to be guest ready.

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 21/02/2020 23:51

Mine is guest ready as I have a fair few guests - nothing twee about it!

AnneOfTeenFables · 21/02/2020 23:57

Yy we're the same. This week we've had DH's friends staying 3 nights; my friend and their DCs over for an afternoon and dinner; and other friends over for lunch. We have quite a social house.

Ilovelala · 22/02/2020 00:21

If I had the time to make it that way it would be

BestOption · 22/02/2020 00:28

The crap people will come out with to justify living in a filthy, shit tip 🤣

everythingisginandroses · 22/02/2020 00:31

"there might be laundry over the Aga"

Hmm
OhTheRoses · 22/02/2020 00:33

If our house wasn't "guest ready" I wouldn't be comfortable living in it. It's cleaned weekly, kitchen is immac before I come to bed and things are put away straight away. It all takes nano seconds of routine.

Ginfordinner · 22/02/2020 00:41

Yes. Like another PP I make up the spare bed with clean bed linen whenever we have had guests.

I don't understand why on MN it is a badge of honour to admit to living in a pig stye.
