Sanitary towel advice

Hi all,

For reasons I’m having to go back to sanitary towels which I haven’t used for about 15 years. Switched from tampons to Mooncup a while ago for environmental reasons.
Since when have Always been stinky? Any recommendations for decent eco-friendly or reusable towels instead of more plastic landfill?

I like the budget range from Precious Stars Pads. Name is twee, but they are working well for me. I got a pack of 6 mediums, the multipack with different sizes, and two extra nighttime ones. Three periods in, and I'm a convert.

Pinkyyy · 21/02/2020 18:17

I haven't tried them, but I know that there are reusable ones available now. They might me worth looking into if you're environmentally conscious.

reluctantbrit · 21/02/2020 18:34

I currently try Natracare.

Could you look into period pants like Modibodis?

Bodyform in the pink packet don't stink. If they change them I'll be devastated.

Currently looking into period pants but £££

Why not try cloth. How about looking at Earthwise girls, Crimson cloth, Minivivi, other makes

Wonderbag · 21/02/2020 20:36

I got mine years ago from Weenotions. They’re a plush, minkee fabric - so comfy!

SirVixofVixHall · 21/02/2020 20:56

Bodyform pink ( wings) or orange (no wings) are both unscented, along with some others in their range.
I use a mix of BodyForm, Natracare, washables, and period pants.
The smell of an unopened pack of Always makes me feel headachey and green. DH once bought me some when we were in a holiday cottage and I had forgotten my usual ones. I used tissue overnight rather than put those air freshener scented things near me !

ChikiTIKI · 21/02/2020 21:11

I used Always for many years just because I had always used them. I just assumed all pads were strongly scented and very plasticy/sweaty.

Bodyform ones are SO much better. Dry cotton feeling and not got the strong scent. Wouldn't go back now to Always.

GetRid · 21/02/2020 21:13

Natracare are great and eco friendly but unfortunately not widely available. Waitrose and Ocado definitely have them

AlohaMolly · 21/02/2020 21:14

Another vote for Earthwise girl here

SirVixofVixHall · 21/02/2020 21:18

I buy from Earthwise girls too. And I have to say, for peri meno flooding, my washable pads were a gazillion times more absorbent than disposables.

greathat · 21/02/2020 21:19

I switched to reusable. Tried various ones but I found honouryourflow to be the best. If you follow them on Facebook they regularly do 20% off happy hours

Haggisfish · 21/02/2020 21:20

Cheeky wipes do reusable towels.tesco own brand not smelly.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 21/02/2020 21:23

I use the following when I’m not “feeling” my mooncup:

  • Flo
  • Kind
  • and I also have some EXCELLENT little lamb washable sanitary towels.

The latter kind of freaked me out to begin with but they wash a treat and there’s no lingering odour.

ouch321 · 21/02/2020 21:25

I've been very impressed by Always Inifinity. They are not scented as far as I've noticed.
I was given pads all those years ago (Kotex) which I used for a few months, didn't like them v much and used tampons from aged 15 till a few years ago when I tried the Mooncup. It didn't gel with me as it put constant pressure on my bladder so I thought I'd see how much pads have moved on in the past 20 years or so.
The Always Infinity have really impressed me and I would have used them as a teen if they were available. I always used to use a liner with a tampon as they could leak quite randomly so it's nice to only rely on one product only.

SpeedofaSloth · 21/02/2020 21:25

For disposables I've recently gone back to plain Kotex pads, the big thick mattressy kind. They don't smell of cheap perfume and they don't make me itch. Surprisingly they don't show through clothing, either.

Fourtights · 21/02/2020 21:27

Another vote here for Earthwise girls. They do started bundles you can buy that have a few different brands in them so you can try a few different types.

If you haven't got it already, I'd recommend getting one of those things with all the pegs on that people use to dry socks. I've found that really useful for air drying pads so they don't take up to much space.

Fourtights · 21/02/2020 21:27

*starter bundles, not started.

LuckyLickitung · 21/02/2020 21:29

Cheeky Mama bamboo pads. I tried them, liked them and have never worn a disposable pad in the years since.

Because they're comfortable, I'm happy to wear them in the days before I'm due and never get caught out.

SouthWestmom · 21/02/2020 21:33

I really like the thick cheap ones for night like Tesco own brand . The really thin ones never seem to cope with flooding and I'm constantly stressed. Tried a mooncup and it made me really weird mentally so gave that up. Am thinking of taking some tranexemic acid now on days 1 and 2.

Lexilooo · 21/02/2020 21:33

Try reusables, I returned to sanitary pads recently and I found the smell of sanitary towels awful and they made me horribly itchy and sore. For a while Aldi own brand were ok but then they added fragrance too.

Reusables are brilliant, soft and comfy, absorbent, stay in place, easy to wash and sustainable.

I bought a pack of about 6 for £20ish on amazon. Mine are fleece but you can get bamboo and towling too I think. Came with a waterproof bag too.

I keep a few old fashioned pads around for emergencies and Sainsbury's own are my favourite as they aren't smelly.

VerbenaGirl · 21/02/2020 21:37

Me and my teenage daughter really like the Cheeky Wipes washable ones. I think them being fabric makes them less sweaty, and therefore fresher.

LooseleafTea · 21/02/2020 21:41

I love reusables too- I use natracare if travelling but love how good fleece is and always trust it. I can’t remember the name of the brand I used as bought a few years ago but haven’t seen it mentioned on this thread.

I did buy one towelling one but fleece seems so much better somehow

I got washable ones recently, and love them. I think the ones I bought were about £15 on Amazon, for about 8 pads and 2 wet bags. Have heard good reviews of the Cheeky Wipes ones.

I've found them very absorbent (although my periods aren't that heavy), and I've had virtually no period pain since switching (other people have said similar, but I was skeptical).

They're nice and comfy, too. And not too bulky.

Of disposables, I like Bodyform, the ones that are about £1 for 14 or so.
