What was half term like when you were a child?

I mostly stayed in bed most of the time.

Pretty boring.

When I was at primary school my mum worked nights so used to be in bed most of the day. I was an only child. I'd either have to play quietly in the house or play outside. If I went to play outside I was under strict instructions not to come in-and-out all day.

I despised most other children so I used to take myself off on my bike for hours/miles pretending to be a long-distance lorry driver.

As a teenager, my mum switched to days. I spent most of it in bed but used to really love going shopping to Safeway with her because there were some very good-looking 17/18/19 year old boys there that I liked to look at and flirt with.

Bluerussian · 21/02/2020 13:32

Half term was good because I didn't have to get up early.

Mossyfern · 21/02/2020 13:33

Low key! Would visit my grandparents, maybe go the cinema once, go with my mum to Gateway for the food shop.

balonzz · 21/02/2020 13:34

I loved half term. I either stayed in watching TV or reading, or played out in the street or the park with the other kids. I used to ride my bike a lot, too. I never had any money, but none of the other kids had any either, so it didn't really make any difference.

Lllot5 · 21/02/2020 13:34

Pretty good actually. Used to go to my grandads. We could eat whatever we liked. Gherkin sandwiches, choc ice and chips, those puddings in a tin that you boil.
My uncle lived there too. He started me on crosswords and chess and card games.

BiByeBaby · 21/02/2020 13:35

Playing out, swimming and sleepovers with friends. Maybe the odd day out with parents but not often

billybagpuss · 21/02/2020 13:36

I may be mis-remembering here but the February half term was only 3 days long when I was very little, (early '70s)

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/02/2020 13:39

Can't really remember much but mum was a single working mum so I spent a lot of holidays with my grandparents.

I used to love it cos they had Sky telly and we were too poor at home to have it!

Morporkia · 21/02/2020 13:39

playing in the street, playing in the park, going on picnics, watching why don’t you, “helping”my grandad out his bets on 😂

crosser62 · 21/02/2020 13:40

Same as balonzz , fun. Not getting up early, bike rides, playing out with friends, climbing trees, reading books, playing with toys, digging in the garden with a spoon looking for treasure and a washing up bowl full of water in the back garden.
I was a child of the 70’s so no telly or electronic devices then.

ZeroFucks · 21/02/2020 13:41

@Morporkia Fucking loved Why Don't You!

CMOTDibbler · 21/02/2020 13:41

My mum was a teacher (and dad worked at a factory with fixed holidays, none of which except christmas coincided with school holidays). There was always lots of work to do during the holidays, esp as until I was 10ish they had a business selling bedding plants. I think Feb half term would have been preparing the poly tunnels and greenhouses, maybe planting seeds. My favourite job was using the special tool to make the trays of compost into seedling blocks

Morporkia · 21/02/2020 13:56

@ZeroFucks

Morporkia · 21/02/2020 13:57

Also eating chocolate nesquik powder off a spoon for breakfast because mum was having a lie in 😂😂

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 21/02/2020 14:01

Loved mid terms ! Would get up early and call for best friend. We would spend the day playing outside only coming in for food.
As a teen I’d still be up early. Watch some tv then meet friends and “hang around “ for day !

TheCanyon · 21/02/2020 14:05

We only used to only get the thurs/fri off usually valentines week. I can't even remember them to be honest, my childhood memory is shocking.

Flaskfan · 21/02/2020 14:27

Grey. I am giving my kids the same experience cos I have been doing school work for a few hours every day. They have visited g parents for an hour, had a friend each round twice, helped me bake cakes and had lots of screen time. Almost a replica of the 80s, but they don't play sindy and Barbie all day. Or read Enid Blyton.

HalfManHalfLabrador · 21/02/2020 14:29

We certainly weren’t brought out on outings every day and constantly entertained by our parents anyway like kids nowadays

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 21/02/2020 14:33

I used to go stay with my auntie as she was a housewife and didn't work. We used to watch going for gold and eat our lunch on our knees in front of the telly. I found this hugely exciting.

Arrowfanatic · 21/02/2020 14:38

Slept in, played outside all day or played inside. Watched movies on VHS, went to friends houses.

twosoups1972 · 21/02/2020 14:42

@Morporkia I loved Why Don’t You. Funnily enough I was trying to explain the concept of this programme to my dds the other day. They weren’t impressed Grin

twosoups1972 · 21/02/2020 14:47

I was a 70s/80s child and had a whole week for half term but I’ve got a much older sister who was born in 1957 and she had either Mon/Tues or Thursday/Friday

We played. By ourselves. And kept an eye on the baby.

Much the same as my DC this week! I’m not made of money so we haven’t done lots of big days out. One NT property with friends, walks with the bribe of a babycinno or hot chocolate at home afterwards. They are limited to 30 minutes screen time each day. They have done craft, cooking, sorted/tidied and played.

ZeroFucks · 21/02/2020 15:24

Thanks for the link... spending far too much time looking around old TV shows now!
