Shit food I've made this week

Made a chicken and broccoli quiche, cottage cheese instead of yummy cheddar - shit

Also made meatballs a la Italian - put red lentils in that haven't cooked properly so there are still nutty little bits - shit

Any cooking fails for you this week?

Oh yeah I also made fajitas last night : added too much chicken stock cube - salty as fuck, so also shit

was one of those, i'll use up some left overs, save money and be healthy brain waves. God knows what I did to it but it tasted like soil.

From the Tesco magazine I made swede and coconut curry. It was absolutely disgusting. I'm just glad I didn't add hard boiled eggs as the recipe said.

Swede is definitely something to eat with a roast dinner with lots of gravy.

NoParticularPattern · 19/02/2020 20:51

Made cottage pie last week and it was dreadful. No idea what happened as I just did what I always do and it’s usually delicious. I imagine I managed to miss something out because children are very tiring and I can’t find my brain. Very annoying as the mash was A1

Grin spacedinosaur I'd not had them for ages and was secretly glad when DS chose them!

TonOfLead · 19/02/2020 22:23

ComtesseDeSpair I made a dish with okra once and found the texture truly repulsive. I refuse to ever touch it again.

dubiousdecision · 19/02/2020 22:30

Bought 3 for 2 packets of quorn mince last week, have so far tried spag bol and shepherds pie and just about managed to keep both down with copious amounts of liquids between mouthfuls. The 3rd packet is tormenting me from the fridge ! It's the texture it's just weird !

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 19/02/2020 22:33

I made a biryani (not this week but it was so bad that I now never deviate). Followed the recipe exactly (BBC); marinated the lamb, carefully chopped, spiced and fried the onions. Layered everything just like the photo... it was so awful that I had to wash off the lamb before our dogs would even eat it.

Now I just stick to what I know. :(

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 19/02/2020 22:34

But this thread is very funny; I don't feel so bad now. Grin

Wincarnis · 19/02/2020 22:42

I made Minestrone soup which was like vomit

DishingOutDone · 19/02/2020 22:46

@Deathraystare now you know full well that is not going to work - those are the ingredients for a disaster, not a fish pie. AND Cold Feet was indeed Monday but at least you can use catch up on that.

SpaceDinosaur · 19/02/2020 22:50

I made sausage, oven chips and baked beans for my toddler for dinner. Because I decided it was a shit food for dinner day and it's hard to mess up shit food! 😂

I licked the spoon after transferring some of the beans from the tin to a microwave container.

Then next thing I knew I had eaten most of a cold tin of beans.
Disclaimer, I'm 14 weeks pregnant and then I was full 😂

Kernowgal · 19/02/2020 22:53

I made a coconut dal on Friday but didn't get around to eating it until Monday (was in the fridge the whole time though). It was rancid, properly revolting. I chucked it in the food waste bin and had a cheese sandwich instead.

Dumbledoresgirl · 19/02/2020 22:54

Yeah I've had a couple of uncharacteristic fails this week.

I am a regular, accomplished baker yet for some stupid reason I turned the oven on without actually setting the temperature and ended up with black coffee cake!

Also, tried a Mary Berry recipe. Meant to be turkey crown roasted with oranges, and then served with a port gravy. I used a chicken instead of Turkey crown. The oranges ended up tasting like marmalade, and the port sauce looked like chocolate blancmange and tasted disgusting. Not doing that recipe again.

weebarra · 19/02/2020 22:59

Uncharacteristic fail here too. Good housekeeping refried beans. Inedible. And purple which is a difficult shade for food. Served with a chilli which did not go down well.
I love cooking but had to apologise for this one.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/02/2020 23:02

I made a lovely harissa spiced chickpea stew, which I served with pitta breads that were in the bottom of the freezer. The pittas must have been there forever, and were really disgusting - so ridiculous when a new packet would have cost about a quid. The stew needs something to scoop/dip, so it was a pretty shit dinner. Fortunately we had cake.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 19/02/2020 23:14

Not this week, but this thread is reminding me of the time when I thought it was a good idea to make dinner out of tinned mince, watery tinned tomatoes, and a banana.

We were in a remote youth hostel and so eating that was the only option. Not good!

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 19/02/2020 23:27

I made cakes which required a tsp of salt, somehow added a tablespoon instead. Envy (not envy)

anon2000000000 · 19/02/2020 23:32

Chilli - it was just shit.

Lozz22 · 19/02/2020 23:33

A Yorkshire pudding to go with the gorgeous stew my Best Friend gave me last week. The yorkie failed miserably!! In fact had I sliced it and put jam between it it would have tasted better cos it resembled more a cake. Oh and some shortbread biscuits ages ago. The right flour makes all the differences as I found out. I'm not the worlds greatest cook. More that I don't have the time nor the patience but I am pretty good at bunging random things together to make a meal or 2 out of. Usually of which happens when my food stock is low and it's a while off pay day

KungFuDizzy · 19/02/2020 23:36

Couscous with some chicken sausages that needed using up, a spoonful of smoked paprika, peas and onion. Couscous cooked fine but needed an extra stock cube (which we had ran out of) so the whole meal was edible but really bland Sad

Franklymydearidontgiveadam · 19/02/2020 23:41

Vegan cottage pie for my other half who is vegan, no veg stock left, no flora for the mash... Very bland but added marmite and it help meatify the taste xx

I've made briyani once and followed this recipe and it came out perfect.

Have a try if you can.

I've made countless of crap meals and at one stage I kept over cooking rice so it was just mush.

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 19/02/2020 23:57

Not a total disaster because it tasted OK, but for speed, I did the Lidl hunters chicken the way they said on the packet (ie bung it in the oven minus the sauce which you add later) instead of how I normally do it (cook chicken in separate dish then add sauce and/or other ingredients to liven and lubricate, and cheese in the last 10 mins).

I'll stick to my normal method I think. The cheese congealed and went a bit lumpy in the sauce, which didn't look very nice. Tasted acceptable though.

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 20/02/2020 00:02

The chicken fajitas I made weirdly also tasted like fish too.. I used to be a good cook!

That's not your fault and could be down to how the poultry was raised. Sometimes the pellets they feed them have a weird fishy odour - depends on what the feed is fortified with I guess. You might want to upgrade the chicken if you can afford it.

FreakForHummous · 20/02/2020 00:05

Last week I was really craving ramen noodles so after looking at lots of recipes online I happily chucked a load of lovely fresh ingredients in a wok and ended up with what actually looked like a bowl of sick 🤢 The broth has completely curdled. Never before have I had to admit defeat and throw my whole dinner in the bin!
