If you work, but also take your kids to school and pick them up, what do you do?

I'm considering a career change for when my kids go to school, that will allow me to drop off and pick them up.
If you are able to do this, what job do you do??

Admin, close to home, 9-2

kateybeth79 · 19/02/2020 19:57

I work for the NHS in a data analyst type of role. We do smart working and working from home, so as long as I do my hours each week, I can leave to pick the kids up etc. Sometimes I'll end up working after the kids are in bed to make up the time. We also can accrue Flexi time

I am also a civil servant and work 9:25-2pm term time. Very lucky although they seem to be getting less willing to support this but I will only need for another 5 / 6 years then I can increase my hours and reduce my non working weeks a little each year until the kids are ready to leave school

Length of commute makes a big difference. My office is 10 minutes cycle from school, so I drop DS off and start work at 9:10.

FaFoutis · 19/02/2020 20:02

lecturer. I set my own hours.

Patchworkpatty · 19/02/2020 20:03

I'm a civil servant and work flexi time so dropped and picked up 2.5 days (and work longer to make up ... and DH dropped and picked up the other 2.5 days because HE is their EQUAL parent ... I am NOT the 'default parent' .. he CHOSE. to have children as did I

I'm a dinner lady at a primary in our village. Its not a career but I enjoy it and it's only a couple of hours a day.

Di11y · 19/02/2020 20:08

Again local government, 9.30-2.45 no lunch break 4 days a week, 3 longer days in the holidays.

I used to when mine were at school and it was great - they never even noticed I had a job - not sure that was a good thing! Worked school hours, term time only as the Marketing Manager at an independent school. Sadly had to go proper full time when I split with my then husband. Luckily, they were older by then and in secondary school and my very supportive parents (and ex MIL) helped out

I do use before and after school club, so kind of cheating.

I’m an actuary, I’m lucky that the firm I work for are fairly flexible (rare in the industry) and I can sometimes work from home.

Rockbird · 19/02/2020 20:13

School office. I mostly start at 7.45 and finish at 4.15 so DH (self employed) does school runs for those days. A couple of days a week I do half days so can do school runs if I drop them off early.

NeverTwerkNaked · 19/02/2020 20:14

Solicitor in the public sector. I work 9.30 -2.30 and work is 20 minutes from school. I don't take a lunch break and have to make up all the rest of the hours in the evening so there is no "me time" ever really but it feels worth it while they are at primary school.

NeverTwerkNaked · 19/02/2020 20:15

(single mum albeit remarried now but DH has to pick his children up from a different school)

YouJustDoYou · 19/02/2020 20:16

Nursery assistant.

Choice4567 · 19/02/2020 20:18

Self employed. I'm an interpreter. So I can choose the days and hours I work

BlueHarry · 19/02/2020 20:20

I'm curious what do the posters who make and sell crafts actually make? I can barely tie my shoe laces so it's not something I'd be able to do but I wish I could!!

Gooseygoosey12345 · 19/02/2020 20:20

I manage a bakery, kids will go to breakfast club if I have to be in early and I finish at 2:30 (excluding any work I do from home) I can take them with me in school holiday time too

Soosiesoo · 19/02/2020 20:21

I'm an accountant and my hours mean that I can pick up two days a week. I rely on wrapping around care otherwise.

My colleague in the same role does 9-2.30 everyday in order to do all the drop offs and pick ups. She's an accountant (in industry) too.

MaderiaCycle · 19/02/2020 20:22

Social worker

Fleurchamp · 19/02/2020 20:36

I work a 10-15 min walk from my DC's school and work 9-3pm 3 days a week (plus a few hours from home, emails etc) if I do need to work late I use after school club - I am lucky it is ad hoc and I don't need to book. I am a solicitor. My job is just "ok" but I will stick it out while the DC are young.
I think the lack of commute is the main thing.

Drivemybluecar · 19/02/2020 20:51

I’m a house keeper. I work from whatever time I drop off for five hours. Mine is different as mine is 16. But it helps being able to be around after school. And school holidays take care of themselves now he is 16. He is normally still asleep when I get back from worK

TheBigFatMermaid · 19/02/2020 20:54

I used to. I worked nights in a care home.

I made it to all the sports days and school plays too. The only thing that suffered was my sleep. 😂

Bluewavescrashing · 19/02/2020 20:56

Higher level teaching assistant at my children's primary school. I'm a qualified teacher but couldn't hack the workload and stress.

flowerycurtain · 19/02/2020 21:00

Farm secretary

Crimbles · 19/02/2020 21:02

I drop off 5 days a week and pick up 3.

PR (with lovely, understanding, flexible bosses).
