Do you do an evening class/hobby?

My mental health is really poor right now. SAHM to two small children, nearly 3 and 9 months. Unable to go back to work at the moment as my eldest had ASD (diagnosed) and needs me a lot right now, plus he's starting school soon.

Been talking to my partner and I need an outlet in the evenings, even just once a week, just for myself. How do I even go about finding adult classes?

Don't even know what I'd want to do, I just need something.
If you have an evening hobby/class, what is it? Looking for inspiration/ideas Smile

Singing, bowling. 😊

NotwhereIshouldbe · 19/02/2020 13:33

I used to do aerial hoop, aerial yoga and pole fitness which is fun 😊 Otherwise you could try a yoga or pilates class?

What about learning a language? I’ve just started a pottery class in the evenings which is quite therapeutic 😊

No, DD is home by 5pm. Then it is all stations go.

I don't have a 'hobby'

I've really got into Zumba this past year. I know it's a bit of a cliche but I've found it fun, uplifting and really improves my mood as well as the benefits of getting fitter. If you just type in Zumba in your area you will be able to find a class.

I think exercise is great for mental health, you could look online? Or local Facebook groups?

amgine · 19/02/2020 13:36

Martial Arts. You get fitter, get a sense of achievement when moving up grades, sets a good example for the children and can be done at your own pace.

Peanutbutteryogurt · 19/02/2020 13:36

Yoga

BillieEilish · 19/02/2020 13:37

Actually, briskly walking on the school run is good for my mental health.

Do you have a DP? I don't, so hobbies are out.

LlamaofDrama · 19/02/2020 13:37

I'm learning a language, it's fun but very time consuming! I work part time with DD at school so I do the lesson during the day while she's at school and do my homework in the evenings and at weekends.

Pottery or drystone walling. Making something concrete with your hands is very soothing. Pottery probably easier to find as an evening class -- drystone walling tends to be a weekend daytime thing.

You could try the WI. I don't go, but friends who do seem to have a great time, and tell me that the age range is a lot younger than you might think!
Now that the evenings are starting to get lighter, you could try running. Set yourself a realistic goal, and work towards it.
Join a gym, so that you can go as many times as you like. Could do classes there, as well as use the equipment.

Choir, book group, yoga (but I am retired)

AnneTwackie · 19/02/2020 13:39

I run with a local group, it’s only for an hour and you can power walk or run between 3 and 7 miles depending on your ability. It great to have a chat along the way and reaching milestones like 5k, 10k and half marathon have made me feel like I’m achieving something. Great excuse to wear leggings and comfy sports bras all day too.

Apolloanddaphne · 19/02/2020 13:39

Singing. I go to my local Rock Choir and it is wonderful for my mental health. I come home buzzing afterwards and the people in the group are lovely.

Leah2005 · 19/02/2020 13:40

I do yoga and am part of a choir. Singing is fantastic for mental well being and there are a lot of choirs now which don't audition to enter. Look at your local colleges for language courses, floristry, sugar craft, computer courses. Check local Post offices for adverts, Google volunteer groups in your area. I chop and change a lot as I need variety. Yoga is the only thing I've stuck at (been going about 8 years). Good luck! (if you're in Warwickshire, our choir is always looking for members).

RamblingFar · 19/02/2020 13:43

Google your county name/town and adult learning. Usually the council run some local courses, see what takes your fancy.

Bunnylady54 · 19/02/2020 13:49

I used to do karate & was the fittest I’ve been in my life. Thinking of taking up Boxfit or similar

LonginesPrime · 19/02/2020 13:50

The Meetup app/website is fab for finding activities.

lunasunshine · 19/02/2020 13:57

I go to acting classes once a week. So much fun!

FredWinnie · 19/02/2020 14:03

Echoing a PP - I do soft contact martial arts. It's great for fitness, confidence and there's a huge sense of achievement when you grade.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 19/02/2020 14:05

Camera club. Don't have to go every week but it gives me something to talk about other than my children and my job.

Tartyflette · 19/02/2020 14:07

French conversation once a week, evening swimming once or twice depending on how I feel or whatever else I've got on.
Swimming is very relaxing, and i feel really relaxed but energised afterwards.

Stompythedinosaur · 19/02/2020 14:08

I did a martial art (aikido) for years and I loved it. I loved doing it and I loved the friends I made.

ExpletiveDelighted · 19/02/2020 14:08

I have an allotment, so that's summer evenings and weekends mainly, I also go to ballet and tap dance classes at a local dance school. There are masses of clubs and organisations in my town, if you're not in local FB groups its worth joining a few as they are often advertised there or you could ask for recommendations. Also worth seeing what's on at your local sports centre, library or community centre.

samlh · 19/02/2020 14:09

I go to the gym twice a week (not really a hobby as such) and I go to an arts and crafts night once a fortnight.

Have a look on social media for events that you might be interested in. I found a ladies night where local ladies meet up once a month for coffee and cake and I also found a reading club that I am thinking of starting soon :)
