Why do I ache all the flipping time??

Ok so Im not 20 any more (in my 50s) but Im active, Im not a couch dweller by any means. I have an active job with lifting, carrying, rushing around, and I have an active life with a dog to walk and gardening to get on with. So if I ache because of the lifting/carrying/rushing why doesn't my body just adapt given this is my life and has been for years? I have sore shoulders, back, neck, knees......and definitely no arthritis or rheumatism so I dont know how to calm it down. Painkillers do sod all! Any ideas anyone as to why, and what I can do about it??

Could “just” be age. Turmeric and cherry juice are the anti-inflammatory wonder substances that every second person I know seem to be taking. No idea if they work.

When was the last time you replaced your mattress? Take all the covers off look at it from the side. Is it still stiff & springy and completely flat?

I also found that I needed to strengthen my lower back once I got my late 40s. I took up yoga & running. I’m much more able to cope and seldom ache now. I’m 56.

RZX44 · 16/02/2020 13:08

Mattress is a year old but I will check it. Yes no doubt need to strengthen my back, if only it would stop aching to allow me to do so!! Feeling very old these days!

Vitamin D deficiency. Try taking a supplement and it should help.

Ronia · 16/02/2020 13:18

Can be a (peri) menopausal sign too.

RZX44 · 16/02/2020 13:22

Bloody menopause! I am on HRT tho (and already take vit D as it happens) I do seem to do all the right things ie supplements etc, this is why I am confused.

Menopause aches and joint pains is a real problem. HRT sorted it for me, miraculously after just 2 days could feel an improvement ! Don’t suffer.

embolass · 16/02/2020 13:26

Oops just saw your on HRT, higher dose maybe needed?

dancingbadger · 16/02/2020 13:28

It could be that when you are lifting/ carrying in your job you are not adopting a good position and not using your core. If your regularly lifting without correct posture and core strength you will ache the next day. As a pp has said back and core strengthening exercises and resistance exercises that are balanced on both sides might help if your not already doing them that is.

Inforthelonghaul · 16/02/2020 13:37

I’m thinking about starting collagen supplements to see if they help with this too.

JaneJeffer · 16/02/2020 13:38

Get some CBD oil.

Have you had your thyroid checked recently ?
It can be a symptom of hypothyroidism

oohnicevase · 16/02/2020 13:39

I have chronic pain, no one knows why .. I recently went private and an endocrinologist picked up some thyroid issues so it's worth getting that checked as it can cause pain.

Thesuzle · 16/02/2020 13:39

Take magnesium tablets and put mag salts into a bath

Supersimkin2 · 16/02/2020 13:41

Get your thyroid checked. I ached to the point of howling at the sky, lovely levothyroxine fixes it.

RZX44 · 16/02/2020 13:52

Hmmm. Yes. Do have thyroid issues in the family. Have been checked for it and everything is normal....or at least wasnt abnormal enough! TSH was over 4 but apparently they wont treat until its much higher?? oohnicevase how did you find a suitable endichronologist?

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 16/02/2020 14:01

Do you lift things in a “technically correct “ way?

I get muscle aches/pain after (too much) exercise and I find that a Magnesium supplement on those days improves it by 90%

oohnicevase · 16/02/2020 14:05

I went through my private insurance , I have had mine tested on the nhs about 8 times and it's always borderline ! He said They dont have the knowledge as a gp he does ... I'm in West Sussex if you are anywhere near .

TheSmallAssassin · 16/02/2020 14:05

Have you been to a doctor about this? My dad had polymyalgia which he thought was muscle pain, but it didn't go away like the DOMS do. Worth checking it out, anyway.

TheSmallAssassin · 16/02/2020 14:20

Just read that polymyalgia is rare under 70, but don't suffer on anyway.

LadyDaisyChain · 16/02/2020 14:21

I was aching all the time and thought it was an age thing (mid 40s). I wanted to lose weight so cut gluten from my diet and as a surprise side effect I don't ache anymore. I was amazed and delighted! I did find ibuprofen helped though so was probably an inflammation thing for me. Good luck, keep trying things, you shouldn't have to just put up with it, I hope you find a solution that helps.

Rewy · 16/02/2020 16:18

They should treat if you are subclinical but symptomatic which you are.

EvaHarknessRose · 16/02/2020 16:20

Menopausal arthritis

Singlenotsingle · 16/02/2020 17:35

I've got polymialgia which is really so painful. Shoulders, thighs, neck, arms all ache especially at night. the GP treats with prednisolone. Magic stuff!

Supersimkin2 · 16/02/2020 22:50

FFS TSH should be 1. No more, no less.
