...who would raise our DC? Would they be put into care or would family raise them - if the latter, how is it decided which family raises them?

Even if you think you have no assets you should have a will. It means that the executors you name can apply for probate quickly rather than someone trying to decide who wants to take that on and then going through the hassle of applying which will take longer and all the time no one being able to talk to any of the authorities. Surely you have bank accounts, house contents etc.

As for your DC get life insurance. This can then go to the people you name as guardians to help raise them. I think it's unfair to expect someone to take in your children if you haven't left any financial provision given their life will be turned upside down as well as your DCs.

You need to discuss this with the potential guardians and be prepared for them to say NO. I wouldn't take on anyone's children, even for family, as I am childfree and made that choice deliberately. Yes that's hard to hear for some people but better you know that before naming them in your will.

Naming guardians isn't legally binding but will help afterwards if the authorities know who you would consider to look after your DC.
