Do You drop litter?

Judging by the vast amount of litter everywhere, there must be a fair few people in every walk of life who drop litter.
So, if you do, could you tell me why as I am genuinely puzzled as to why anybody would do this?
prompted by seeing a massive pile of empty bottles/ wrappers at a traffic lights where motorists have obviously lobbed stuff out the window

I think possibly a bag of vomit on a stretch of road in the middle of nowhere could very possibly, maybe, ever so slightly be near to acceptable

A plastic bag ?!

I don't think so. Not ever.

TheMemoryLingers · 13/02/2020 18:05

Better to have the vomit on its own - at least it will degrade fairly quickly.

StiffUpperQuip · 13/02/2020 18:06

I had imagined one of those aeroplane or ferry paper bag type ones. Plastic would be able to be tied up and therefore not an issue to be kept in the car.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 13/02/2020 18:07

DD1 is currently volunteering to pick up litter on the local common as part of her DofE award.

We've found some interesting things including a number of small gas canisters and balloons where people had been having fun and getting a buzz from inhaling the gas.

The nice thing is the number of people who have made encouraging comments when they've seen us.

TheMemoryLingers · 13/02/2020 18:11

It's a long while since I have been on a plane/ferry but I think the sick bags are lined with plastic. The paper is to stop the vomit showing through the bag. Envy

I live in view of a popular footpath 5 mins from a corner shop. It takes 5 min to drink a can at which point I regularly see people chuck their can away.
The almost funny thing is people know it's not socially acceptable to litter so people always look around to see if anyone is watching before throwing their rubbish.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/02/2020 18:53

Same goes for dog shit leavers who are fully aware their dog has crapped on a pavement and they walk away with no intention of clearing it up.
This is bad enough but even worse are the dog walkers who bag it up and then hang it on a tree or toss it in the hedge. At least the rain would eventually wash the actual poo away.

The litter where I live is shocking too. I blame McDonalds etc. for most of it but I can't understand why so many people just don't care.

When I go into the nearest shopping centre, I usually take a shortcut and I often see men urinating there.

People spit in the street.

Archaeologists use lines of nettle plants as a hint to previously occupied land Grin

Whilst grim, you can't really equate immediately biodegradable (and horticulturally useful) urine with plastic waste that might take centuries if not millennia to break down.

Not that I'm advocating pissing in the streets, in case anyone thinks that.

I get really upset when I see litter. I once saw a woman on the train drop her tissues onto the floor. It made my blood boil and I did say something to her, in front of a full train carriage. She got really defensive, said the train gets cleaned anyway, then eventually said she was planning to pick them up when she got off. She then left them on the floor for the whole journey, until everyone got off at the final destination.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/02/2020 19:22

I often get some very funny looks when I pick up a crisp packet/drinks can etc. at my local bus stop - and put it in the bin, which is a mere 2 or 3 paces away.

Why the filthy, ignorant cretins who dropped it couldn’t have done that in the first place I don’t know. I’ve never seen the bin anywhere near full, so it’s not that.
In the meantime I’ll go on being the mad old bag who picks up litter at the bus stop.

hagsrus0 · 13/02/2020 20:26

Never forgotten after all these years a scene in Kate and Allie - tossing ice cream wrappers in the park. Not only something these nice middle class women would not do, but surely the actresses themselves would have demurred.
Guess not!

cheeseomelette · 13/02/2020 20:41

Went to stay with family in a town in the West Midlands over Christmas and have never seen so much litter in my life. It was disgusting. I ended up doing a litter pick while I was there as I couldn't keep walking past it.

I couldn't understand how everyone could be so complacent about it. It was a relief to get home - and we by no means live in a posh area, but people just don't generally litter here.

Queenoftheashes · 13/02/2020 20:53

Walking down street in central London some prick right in front of me was unwrapping something and just dropped it right there without a second thought. I nearly headbutted him.

MrsDilligaf · 13/02/2020 21:18

I get so angry about the amount of rubbish that I see flung about. My route to work goes past the local secondary school and the amount of litter that I see thrown by its pupils is a disgrace. I have contacted the school about it, but they weren't interested and said they couldn't control behaviour outside of the school.

My DD wouldn't dare drop rubbish - she knows that rubbish goes in the bin. Or mummy's handbag

eeyore228 · 13/02/2020 21:22

I remember my youngest DD was walking home with me and her sister, drinks in hand. We got to our wheelie bin and asked both girls to pop their bottles in the bin. Hers was gone. She had ’left’ it outside someone's house! I made her walk back with me to retrieve it. There is no excuse!

zasknbg · 13/02/2020 21:24

Nobody is going to admit to dropping litter.

But litter is absolutely everywhere. It's astonishing how much is one the verges next to roads.

I saw a woman in nice clothes in a nice clean car eat her McD from the drive through and literally dump the bag out of her window afterwards. She was about 10 feet from a bin!!!!!

Russellbrandshair · 13/02/2020 21:37

Who on earth is going to say yes they drop litter?!!

VetOnCall · 13/02/2020 21:51

I hate any kind of littering but there is a special place in hell reserved for people who throw chicken bones and corn cobs on the ground. I've had patients die after eating bones and corn cobs when out on walks. It's heartbreaking and completely avoidable; it makes me so angry.

BonnesVacances · 13/02/2020 22:51

@DGRossetti Her idea is that the car reg should be printed on the bag so the litter can be traced back. Much like your idea. Maybe it'll come to something one day.

A PP mentioned the Wombles. They're back!

The almost funny thing is people know it's not socially acceptable to litter so people always look around to see if anyone is watching before throwing their rubbish.

On my route into town there is a part where the pavement goes behind a bush and can’t be seen from the road. The bush is always full of cans. People know it’s wrong.

Papoy · 13/02/2020 23:26

Sometimes if i see someone drop a takeaway cup or some sort of rubish, I run after them and say "excuse me, you just dropped your cup/cigarete box"... in the same tone like they have dropped their wallet or car keys...

The look on their face is priceless ... however they are rarely sorry about their actions, no shame what so ever....

Abraid2 · 14/02/2020 09:25

I reported a guy who’d dropped his discarded lunch bits on the road along with a carpark ticket with his number plate. Absolutely no interest from our local authority waste services.

ActualHornist · 14/02/2020 10:48

I don’t and it’s one of my biggest bugbears.

I heard on the news the other day that instances of fly tipping have doubled since 2012, costing councils £££. Astonishingly didn’t tie this into decreased bin collections Hmm

(Irrelevant point sorry!

woodhill · 14/02/2020 10:52

Just disgusting, I hate it
