Have you got rid of your freezer drawers?

Asking because mine are a pain in the arse - one is just about passable as it has so many bits broken off, and the other is just starting to crack.

Considering taking them out and just shoving stuff in the space instead. But will this cause an issue for the actual freezing?

oooh can you do this??

I would kick the drawers in my kitchen freezer to kingdom come given half a chance, it's so difficult and awkward it's impossible to believe it is an inanimate object.

maybe keep the bottom one to stop everything spewing out every time the door is opened??

I regularly tell the stupid kitchen freezer that I much prefer the chest freezer in the shed that is much more helpful and not in the least be difficult.

cjt110 · 13/02/2020 10:19

The bottom one is the one which is mostly FUBAR'd

I looked at how much replacements would be... £30 each per drawer!

I bet you can take them out, whilst I know itll be a PITA to get stuff out though?

Maybe condensation sticking to the shelf?
Our all terrain freezer (second hand in 1995) lost it's drawers years ago and it's fine.
It lives outside so doesn't have an easy life Grin

I did this!
-More space
-Less faff
-Less swearing

Do it!

Crockof · 13/02/2020 10:21

Cardboard boxes? I use cardboard boxes in my chest freezer so all similar stuff goes in together.

cjt110 · 13/02/2020 10:24

@Crockof Good idea... don't they go soggy?

OP posts:
Crockof · 13/02/2020 10:28

Mine get tatty so I do swap them but only occasionally. All supermarket frozen food is delivered in boxes, I just use them.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/02/2020 10:28

I think the stuff in there might just fall out, depending on the design of your freezer.

Might also cause an issue with freezing, but only if you put a lot of unfrozen stuff in at the same time, whatever is in the middle might take days(?) to freeze. But probably not if you're just putting already frozen food from the shop in there.

You can get new drawers, but they're quite expensive, google freezer drawer spares for a few suppliers.

We too have one freezer drawer that is falling apart and another which did have a pull down flappy thing until a ham fisted friend broke the hinges because he thought it was a drawer and pulled it too hard.

If I'd have known how long that fridge freezer was going to last, I'd have paid the seven quid or whatever it was for new hinges, but it seemed like such a lot of money at the time for a couple of tiny bits of plastic.

So instead we've put up with a freezer shelf that pops off it's mounts as soon as you look at it for over 20 years because the hinges and flap that hold it in place are missing.

Part of me thinks sod it, just buy a new fridge freezer, but it still works so if it ain't completely broke, don't fix it and I'm also quite curious as to how long it is going to last.

cjt110 · 13/02/2020 10:30

Sadly ours is an integrated one that was in the house when we bought it so we can't just replace easily. And no space for another

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 13/02/2020 10:32

I ve only got the top drawer. Much easier.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/02/2020 10:32

Oh, missed a few updates while I was writing far too much.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/02/2020 10:55

Yep it's a game changer

BarbaraofSeville · 13/02/2020 11:09

I don't understand how this works.

Doesn't everything fall out when you open the door?

Doesn't it all get stacked up all higgledly piggeldy with sod's law dictating that whatever you want being at the bottom/back of the pile and you have to sort through it all, hoping you'll find what you want before you get frostbite and then have to stack everything back up in the freezer?

longwayoff · 13/02/2020 11:13

Doesn't it make the freezer ice up?

TheQueef · 13/02/2020 11:21

I think you stack it different Babs
In ours unboxed pizza and garlic baguettes in top shelf (very occasionally stuff sticks to that shelf, think that's the only active freeze shelf) meat and chickens in the next (side by side iykwim rather than stacked) veg and onion rings next shelf and bread, milk, butter in the bottom.

No one else goes in the outside freezer so it's exactly how I want it.
The kitchen freezer is a state because everyone uses it like a jumble sale.

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 13/02/2020 11:22

I took out the top two, and left the bottom two. Replaced them with those fridge organisers you can get. Best thing ever.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 13/02/2020 11:25

I binned my top drawer and just use the space as a shelf.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/02/2020 11:25

Oh, I understand. Neither of our freezers have shelves in, except one shelf in one freezer. If you take the drawers out, there is nothing except a big empty space - the drawers hang off slots in the sidewalls.

TheQueef · 13/02/2020 11:30

Ah our inside one is like that with glass shelves and slots.
So you can see the rammel Angry

We get a fair bit of surprise food (kid works Tesco and brings home cheap shelf) so there's always random, just chucks it in. Other kid constantly empties it declaring there's nothing to eat Hmm

EngagedAgain · 13/02/2020 11:31

I'm pretty annoyed with myself because after I got a new freezer I realised afterwards that it's not really big enough. The old one had the same amount (3) drawers but I failed to notice they are smaller. I like a good stock in but still with room to manoeuvre. So it's possibly better without the drawers. Never thought of that, but then they will have to be stored somewhere and I'm stuck for space.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 13/02/2020 11:33

I defrosted our kitchen freezer before Christmas (no drawers, just shelves) and in the process put everything in one of those nice, square freezer bags. It took too long to do that I had to go and get the kids from school before I got round to putting it all back together, so I just shoved the freezer bag in as it was. It's been about 3 months, and I still haven't bothered putting the shelves back, I just take the bag out, rummage through it and put it back - it's actually easier than the shelves, and there seems to be less ice build up as there's no risk of anything poking out and pushing the door open.

cjt110 · 13/02/2020 11:44

@PollyPocketLucyLocket What are these fridge organisers you speak of?? They may be the holy grail of the freezer world! Share!

@cjt110

I just picked mine up from Home Bargains.

Have you got rid of your freezer drawers?
PollyPocketLucyLocket · 13/02/2020 12:05

I bought all in one size, large. Which fits a couple in each shelf of the freezer. Deceptively spacious too. Like The Tardis

cjt110 · 13/02/2020 12:07

@PollyPocketLucyLocket Can you remember what it's called? Trying to find it on their website x
