No she used to luck her fingers and use them. Removal of a dirty mark from a face was preceded by, "come here, mummy's spit." Envy

Saucery · 12/02/2020 16:27

The one used for washing up and wiping down? Certainly not.

AuntieMarys · 12/02/2020 16:27

In the 60s my mum had a bit of Vim on it

Nighttimefreedom · 12/02/2020 16:28

A wet flannel kept handy.

SummerHouse · 12/02/2020 16:28

Envy not envy.. but also, strangely... envy.

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 12/02/2020 16:29

I wipe my sons face with my licked finger 🤷‍♀️

TheQueef · 12/02/2020 16:29

Spit on a used tissue was a favourite.
I was a scruff so constantly being wiped or rubbed.

Nowayorhighway · 12/02/2020 16:29

My mum always licked her fingers and did it that way which was vile, I hated the smell of her spit.

Cocolapew · 12/02/2020 16:32

Not sure, definitely on the tea towel though and spitting on a hanky.

Whynosnowyet · 12/02/2020 16:34

I remember not being allowed to stay at a particular friend's house as her dm had a
'hands /face /floor and dishes cloth'!!
I have been known to use a kitchen cloth to rub sticky hands but not a face.

LonginesPrime · 12/02/2020 16:35

A J-cloth is just a cloth until you use it for something.

So if she's just used it to clean the loo, it's gross. But if it's clean, then it's not any different from a flannel, is it?

MrsFogi · 12/02/2020 16:35

Oh yes dish cloth (which I don't recall being changed often) used on our faces when at home and when out and about used tissue with her spit on it. I suspect my dcs would object to both options!

WineIsMyCarb · 12/02/2020 16:35

2020s Mum here and I daily wipe my children's faces with a wet soapy dishcloth. Same gets hot bleach washed daily and a fresh one every other day or so. Don't see difference between using it to wipe jam off faces to jam off plates!

DM and DGrandma's dishcloths always smelt damp. Bleurgh!

LassoOfTruth · 12/02/2020 16:37

J Cloth! Luxury! My mum preferred to lick a (probably used) tissue and attack our mucky little faces with that. Still traumatized!

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 12/02/2020 16:38

Yep. She'd be washing up and just grab us and give us a wipe down with the same cloth.
I'm not sure why she felt a greasy dish cloth was better than a bit of dirt on my face! Still, I have the constitution of an ox so I don't think it did me any harm.

zafferana · 12/02/2020 16:40

Yes!

Cinammoncake · 12/02/2020 17:04

Grin Yes exactly this. It was the same cloth for about a week or two at least, used for all manner of cleaning, washing up, wiping the cat, whatever.

I think to be fair she did also do the 'spit on a tissue' for out and about

HaudMaDug · 12/02/2020 17:44

Not a J-cloth (they were too expensive) but the cotton, woven, string vest style cloth that always smelt mouldy and damp.
I'm just grateful it wasn't her wire wool pot scrubber. (The type with the pink/white chalky residue seeping out of it).
Granny spit shifted everything but she would pull out the hanky from her pocket with a Pan drop still stuck to it.

Northernsoullover · 12/02/2020 17:47

It was spit and a tissue in my childhood. Grim. I was at my friends house when her son was a toddler and she used the kitchen foam square thingy to wipe his face and hands. That was also grim.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 12/02/2020 17:50

My DM would spit on a tissue or handkerchief and wipe my face with that - yuk!

lazylittlelucy · 12/02/2020 17:52

I don't remember explicitly, but all things considered it's quite likely. Many similar practices were used in our frugal 1970s household 🤨

funmummy48 · 12/02/2020 17:54

Spit wash here as well! 🤢

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 12/02/2020 17:56

My mum did. As a teenager and even now I have quite good skin so maybe it helped Grin

Cinammoncake · 12/02/2020 17:57

Oh yes I remember the string vest ones. They'd always have bits from the pans stuck in them. And those wire things with the pink coming out. On the sink next to the orange rubbery things that stuck on the ends of the taps Wink
