Any pie people out there can steer me in a direction of a good pie? That are not just empty pastry/gravy pies!

I love a good pie, but have found all the pies recently I buy from the supermarket only have 10 small pieces of chicken in them and when shared with DH and DS it's all pastry and gravy and no filling. The same with steak pie etc.

So I have in the past made my own pie, I have a lovely pie dish, the ceramic baking beans etc but it takes me ages to make. (I'm not the best cook)

Can anyone here make a pie in under 30 mins?

Or does anyone know a good pie brand?

Pieminister. Just lush. I like their Moo Blue.

Another vote for Pieminister. I live their beef and ale one (seen them in Waitrose, I don’t know who else stocks them).

The Higgedy chicken and ham pie is delicious, and so is the Charlie Bigham's steak and ale pie. The CB pies do come in their own individual pie dishes, so you could end up with a cupboard full!

Boopear · 12/02/2020 13:06

Turner's pies. You can buy them online. They are pie prize winners many times over. Their pies are just amazing - you can never go back! Disclaimer: I do not work for or have any associations with them- am just a fussy pie person.

Higgidy pies! The spinach and fetta one is amazing.

Originalusernameunavailable · 12/02/2020 13:10

I make a big batch of beef and ale intl the slow cooker every now and then and freeze into portions, then all you have to do on the day is defrost overnight and then whack it in the ready made pastry.
Slow cooker beef and ale is braising steak/beef, carrots, leeks, turnip, celery, thyme, salt, pepper, Worcester sauce and a bottle of ale/stout. Weirdly the zest of an orange also gives it the edge.

TeaAndStrumpets · 12/02/2020 13:16

I am reading with interest!

I would recommend looking in your local farm shop, to see if they sell pies from independent baker/butcher shops. Ours has some lovely ones made in the depths of Lincolnshire, sadly not mail order though. DH is a fussy soul and hates too much seasoning. The ingredient list is very short and the pies taste home madeSmile

TeaAndStrumpets · 12/02/2020 13:19

original your pies sound fab!

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 12/02/2020 13:20

M&S individual pies. Crammed with steak or chicken.

EngagedAgain · 12/02/2020 13:25

I've not actually brought one yet but apparently M&S steak (and think ale)pie is good but was about £6! Think that's just for one!

Riddleofthesands · 12/02/2020 13:25

Waitrose frozen slow cooked beef and ale.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 12/02/2020 13:28

Like Boopear says. Turners Pies. Delicious, awarded winning, beautiful pastry and the gravy is lovely too. Have a look online.

poppym12 · 12/02/2020 13:40

I thought Higgedy were good until I tried Pieminister.

fairydustandpixies · 12/02/2020 13:47

Another one for Turner's Pies! (I don't work for them either btw...) They are just amazing, highly recommend. You can order online and they deliver them in a special chilled box.

TheRattleBag · 12/02/2020 13:58

If you're anywhere near Barnsley, then I recommend the pies from Cannon Hall Farm Shop - they're tremendous. We even have them for Christmas Day lunch Grin

emwithme · 12/02/2020 14:16

Pieminister are great. Love the moo & blue and Heidi most of all.

Charlie Bighams are not real pies, they're stews wearing a little pastry hat.

RhymingRabbit3 · 12/02/2020 15:12

Another vote for pieminister

MrsTumbletap · 12/02/2020 16:03

Great suggestions I am glad I am not alone in appreciation of a good pie.

So the majority of you buy them and not make them. Seems I need to get to Waitrose then I am assuming I can freeze them? So then I can buy a few at a time.

@Originalusernameunavailable what does you ready made pastry consist of?

Do you bake it blind with the beans and all that faff?

Op what region? Maybe one of us can recommend a good farm shop/butcher

Very very good.

rockingthelook · 12/02/2020 19:21

Wrights pies from Stoke on Trent, lush, however if you are in North wales there is a family butchers shop in Trefriw called T Parry and daughters, their steak pies are full of steak and absolutely delicious

If you want to make one this looks nice.

Titsywoo · 12/02/2020 19:29

There are some decent ones in supermarkets like Pieminister but the best shop bought I have found are these www.therealpieco.co.uk/. I buy them from a local pie shop. The pastry is lovely and flakey and you get lovely big, soft chunks of meat in them. The steak and stout is gorgeous.
