Any pie people out there can steer me in a direction of a good pie? That are not just empty pastry/gravy pies!

I love a good pie, but have found all the pies recently I buy from the supermarket only have 10 small pieces of chicken in them and when shared with DH and DS it's all pastry and gravy and no filling. The same with steak pie etc.

So I have in the past made my own pie, I have a lovely pie dish, the ceramic baking beans etc but it takes me ages to make. (I'm not the best cook)

Can anyone here make a pie in under 30 mins?

Or does anyone know a good pie brand?

IMO the finest pies to be bought online are Shirleys. Can also find them on random markets in Yorkshire/Lancashire.

Sparklingbrook · 12/02/2020 19:30

Charlie Bighams. They do two sorts, ones in the little dishes with a pastry top and also ones that are pastry top and bottom. So nice.

You get what you pay for with supermarket pies. I like M&S’s ‘our best ever’ steak pie. It’s often included in the ‘dine in’ promo.

Local farm shop not pie shop!

Lordfrontpaw · 12/02/2020 19:32

Can you still get ‘square pie’? They had a concession in selfridges about 16 years ago and I’m sure they started selling in supermarkets. Very nice mushroom and asparagus.

Lightuptheroom · 12/02/2020 19:39

Another one saying Turner's (amazing pie, mash, mushy peas and gravy) lucky enough to live near their shops!

ratspeaker · 12/02/2020 20:17

Another saying Pieminister.
DH discovered Moo and Blue when we were on holiday in Bristol.

They have online shop

@MrsTumbletap tonight I’ve copped out and just whacked a pastry lid on the filling and baked for 35 minutes. I’ll take a picture if I haven’t had too much wine remember Grin

Www.hamptonestates.co.uk . A farm shop in Farnham. Beef pies are equisit.

Stuckupsnob · 12/02/2020 21:07

Just realised my link takes you to house sales Grin

The farm shop in Seale, Farnham It’s called Hampton estates. Definitely worth a visit, you have to order the pies by email, collection is once a month, the staff are really friendly and you get tea and cake on collection days !

Hull Pie, if you live near Hull of course!!

Toria70 · 12/02/2020 21:16

DH loves a Jon Thorner pie, the steak and peppercorn sauce one is his fave, followed by the chicken and mushroom. We get them from Ocado.

Our local butcher has someone locally who makes pies and they are fab. Just full of nice cuts of meat and well made. Worth a look in any near you, I always buy a few and pop them in the freezer.

Polkadotdelight · 12/02/2020 21:31

I'm lazy, I make pies but use pre-rolled pastry and as I'm not as massive pastry fan I just whack it on as a lid. We are vegetarian so this might not appeal but roast sweet potato, red pepper and red onion with red pesto and goats cheese is a very nice filling!

Originalusernameunavailable · 12/02/2020 21:41

I had too much wine to do the roast spuds and cut pastry to size so husband has to shove it in. Oooh er.Confused

That does look nice!

I think I am going to search for the suggestions on here and buy a few and maybe freeze?

Then when I make my next one I will just do the lid. Its the base and cooking that first with the beans and it over cooks the edges and the base still looks soggy, then you have boiling hot beans to put somewhere. I find it such a faff.

So to just make the lid will be easier.

Another vote for Pieminister.

margaritasbythesea · 16/02/2020 11:07

Marks and spencer Chicken pies are fab. They're my got to for dinners where it needs to be nice but no time or effort. And I make good pie.

MrsJoshNavidi · 16/02/2020 11:09

Pieminister and Higgedy pies. Both also do really good vegetarian pies.

Fredastaireatemyjamsandwich · 16/02/2020 11:22

www.radfordspiecompany.co.uk/ Radfords Pies are delicious and they deliver too! ( yes, as in the family with 23 children)

If you are in central London ever try out The Pie Room (part of Rosewood Hotel on High Holborn). Eye wateringly expensive. Mouth-wateringly good.

Clawdy · 16/02/2020 12:25

Another vote for Charlie Bigham. Their steak and ale pies in the little ceramic dishes are absolutely delicious, loads of filling and lovely pastry.

MuseumOfYou · 16/02/2020 13:25

Jamie's steak, cheese and Guinness pie is a great winter warmer. We got through this beauty on Friday and Saturday night.

Is that just the lid @museumofyou?
