Hand luggage - Ryanair and Easyjet

VillageFete · 11/02/2020 21:20

Hi,

I’m taking two flights next week, one with Easyjet and one with Ryanair, I only have hand luggage. I’ve only ever travelled with a bag that i’ve checked in and has gone under the plane before so i’m wondering how it works with cabin bag only...

I need to take things like hair straighteners and make up (mascara, lipgloss, foundation etc) Also body lotion, face moisturiser, make up remover, perfume etc...

Can I take all of the above, providing the liquids/creams are under 100ml and in those clear little bottles that you can buy in Superdrug etc... Is there a set limit of how many I can take? What about things like hairspray and deodorant? Buy it whilst away and don’t bring it back Hmm

Make sure you’ve checked the cabin bag size for Ryanair as they only allow a large handbag size and you need to pay more for a proper cabin bag.

dementedpixie · 11/02/2020 21:26

You can only have 1 clear bag max size 20 x 20cm to fit in your liquids/gels/pastes. They don't have to be in clear bottles, it's the bag that needs to be clear.

Frankiethree · 11/02/2020 21:28

Liquids need to fit in a 20cmx20cm clear bag. To a maximum of 1000ml, so equivalent of 10 x 100 bottles.

Very difficult to do!

I flew from Manchester last week and there was a few people with two of the clear plastic bags so they may have relaxed on that a bit. They were also handing the plastic bags out at security so no need to purposely buy one!

And definitely check your bag dimensions! Ryanair and easyJet have different allowances for cabin bags.

Starisnotanumber · 11/02/2020 21:36

If you are going with easyjet you can purchase hands free for around 7.00 this allows you to check in a cabin size bag any weight plus carry a small handbag sized bag onto plane so you can take any cosmetics etc Otherwise easyjet is only one bag plus a bought at airport bag.
Ryanair is just a tiny bag unless you have opted for priority which allows a cabin sized bag plus handbag. You only get the usual small bag of liquids this way

Pippin2028 · 11/02/2020 21:39

Easyjet give a decent cabin bag specification but they are super strict that you are allowed one bag only, so handbags will need to go in the case. Ryanair you will need to check very carefully and buy priority boarding in order to bring in a bigger cabin bag. Sometimes if the flights are busy, they will put your luggage in the hold at the boarding gate and you just collect it at the carousel.

VillageFete · 11/02/2020 21:42

Thank you everyone. Yes we have priority with Ryanair.

Right, so if I buy 10x100ml squeazy bottles (saw them in Superdrug yesterday) I can fill them with foundation, make up remover, body lotion etc.. and that’s ok to carry on board? I assume i’ll have to buy a mini hairspray to take (or are aerosols not allowed?!) Is bronzer ok? With it being powder?

I know I sound incredibly stupid Blush But i’ve never travelled this way before and the above items are essential!

You can only take as many bottles that will fit into the clear plastic bag I think? Thee is a limit to overall liquid I believe. Check their website

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 11/02/2020 21:47

Face powder is fine to take through without being in the clear bag.

Anything that is a gel, liquid or paste is not (mascara, lipstick, etc need to be in the clear bag).

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 11/02/2020 21:48

Toothpaste needs to be in clear bag too.

You could buy some toiletries once through security. But bear in mind you’ll have to rehome them before you travel back if you’re coming back cabin bags only.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 11/02/2020 21:51

All info here.

Starisnotanumber · 11/02/2020 21:51

If you can fit them into a bag of the correct size any amount of makeup etc will be OK. You can buy after duty free from boots etc for stuff you may need. Rember toothpaste is a liquid as well..
If you get the hands free option with easyjet which you can easily do after you have checked on then you can take what you want because it's a small hold case.
I fly through Manchester regularly and I don't think they have changed rules at all, I think sometimes if you put bags on separate trays then maybe they get through but I wouldn't risk it.

dementedpixie · 11/02/2020 21:51

Surely foundation would be in a small enough bottle already. Buy travel sized toiletries rather than trying to decant into other bottles.

Frankiethree · 11/02/2020 22:56

Are makeup remover wipes also counted as a liquid?

Seeingadistance · 11/02/2020 23:44

Easyjet allow a larger carry-on bag than Ryanair do, so check the dimensions and take the smaller bag. I usually fly with EasyJet but went with Ryanair last year, and my usual bag was too big. On the upside, I could take a small handbag as well.

lyralalala · 12/02/2020 00:29

Instead of decanting I’d pick up a pack up of make up remover wipes. You’ll need a mini hairspray so it’s less than 100 ml

You won’t need everything in those bottles (they are a pain) plus you’ll need space in the bag for any other creams or gel - lipstick, eyeliner etc

Minimise as much as possible as although some people get away with two bags it’s totally dependent on the security bods on the day

Nifflernancy · 12/02/2020 00:31

You don’t want to be faffing around decanting into little bottles do you? Also check whether the bottles have to say the amount on them in case security want to check.

anon2000000000 · 12/02/2020 00:34

I had 6 of those clear bags when I went away last year. No one said anything to me. The sign said all liquids must go in clear bags, not all liquids must fit in 1 bag.

Heymacarana · 12/02/2020 00:39

I am pretty sure that where you are travelling to will have shops that sell makeup?

The hotel will have soap, shampoo etc. If not you can buy as much as you like in departures

Can’t understand people who faff around with all this nonsense

mantlepiece · 12/02/2020 00:47

10x100ml bottles will not fit into the small plastic bag supplied.

If you go into boots they have a stand with tiny tubes and bottles of things which will suffice for a weekend trip. They are usually 10 or 20ml in size.

If you look at your foundation etc, you will see they are usually only 30ml at the most. No need for 100ml bottles.

MrsFezziwig · 12/02/2020 01:03

The following is from Gov.uk:

Containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag

And there seems to be some misleading advice on here - you certainly can’t take whatever size makeup etc. you like through security, regardless of what configuration of bags the airline allows. Obviously you could buy it in duty-free & take it on the plane, but you wouldn’t be able to bring large sizes with you when you come home.

StarlightLady · 12/02/2020 07:59

You are supposed to have just one clear bag. Taking more than one clear bag means they might be confiscated.

There is no restriction on liquids bought airside after security.

And when you get off the aircraft, you’ll be off and away whike others are still hanging round the airport.

dementedpixie · 12/02/2020 08:20

Liquids include:

  • all drinks, including water
  • liquid or semi-liquid foods, for example soup, jam, honey and syrups
  • cosmetics and toiletries, including creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara and lip gloss
  • sprays, including shaving foam, hairspray and spray deodorants
  • pastes, including toothpaste
  • gels, including hair and shower gel
  • contact lens solution
  • any other solutions and items of similar consistency

If you do take liquids in your hand luggage:

  • containers must hold no more than 100ml
  • containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm
  • contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed
  • the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top
  • you’re limited to 1 plastic bag per person
  • you must show the bag at the airport security point
katzenellenbogen · 12/02/2020 10:43

Also be aware that EasyJet only allow ONE cabin bag. Not one cabin bag and your handbag. If you have a seperate handbag then you must be able to fit it in your cabin bag to get on the plane.

They don't always enforce this, but it is their rule and I have been on several recent flights where they have been very strict.

Not all airports will give you the clear bag for free. Liverpool (I think) charge £1.
